Beware of the scribes

Mark 12:35-40

  1. You must know who Jesus really is
  • Problem with the scribes they didn’t know who Jesus truly was- wanted him to be a political king- wanted him to reestablish the throne of David- rule Israel
  • Jesus sets them straight in this scripture- 36 For David himself said by the Holy Spirit: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”’37 Therefore David himself calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?”
  • He is like David because he is from his lineage and because he is a king. But, he is also not like David because he is David’s Lord.
  • Yes he is the son of David- in that his lineage is from David, but he is over David.
  • Matthew 1:1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:
  • The Bible declares that he is the Son of David- he is of the lineage of the king
  • Many times throughout the NT we see people saying “Son of David have mercy on me”
  • Which shows that the people thought him to be the promised one THE son of David- the one who was to save the people of Israel. But he is HIGHER than David. He IS David’s Lord.
  • The fullness of who Jesus was is always a hard thing to understand for the people of the Bible. They struggled with it as Jesus was doing his ministry
  • For some, it wasn’t until his crucifixion that they fully understood who he was-
  • Mark 15:39 So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”

  • Why does it matter?
  • Because how you view Jesus will impact how you respond to Jesus. Who he IS
  • Many people today want to take away the deification of Jesus. They want to normalize him
  • And I have no problem with understanding the humanity of Jesus- but I never want to reduce him down to a level that makes me more comfortable. He’s GOD in the flesh!
  • What does it mean to you?
  • Don’t have Jesus be someone that he’s not. Let him be who he is.
  • I have a friend from college- wears the same clothes all the time, cuts corners, people talk about him- what they don’t know is that he tries to give every last dollar that he can to gospel
  • Mistaken Identity! People think Jesus is something or someone that he’s not!
  • John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
  • John 8:24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
  • Jesus is God, Jesus is the Son, Jesus is the redeemer of our souls, The Savior, The peace maker, the law giver, the comforter, He is the everything to us!
  • When you understand who Jesus truly is- it will change the way you interact with him and change YOU
  • He is the forgiver- he will forgive you of your sins. He will restore your soul. He will take away the guilt and shame- You wont be bound by your past mistakes
  • He is the encourager- When you feel as though you cannot make it, through him you can. You can go through things you never thought possible with his spirit in YOU
  • Zephaniah 3:17 The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”
  • He is the Redeemer- He takes the broken parts of your life and makes them new. When you’ve messed up your own life, he can fix those broken parts
  • Psalm 111:9 He has sent redemption to His people; He has commanded His covenant forever: Holy and awesome is His name.
  • He is the Chastiser- Hebrews 12:6 For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.
  • He is the sustainer- Colossians 1:17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist
  • He is the comforter! Psalm 9:9 The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, A refuge in times of trouble.

  1. Jesus is for the common people
  • Why did the common people hear Him gladly?
  • Christ completely changed the broader meaning of what it meant to be a person who followed God.
  • He came and proclaimed the love of God to everyone. Jew and Gentile. He saw value in everyone. He forgave everyone. Loved everyone. Preached to everyone.
  • There wasn’t a dividing line between anyone in Christ’s kingdom. Everyone was important
  • People who appear to be ‘common’ are the most open to conviction about their position
  • You don’t have to tell someone who is broken and empty that they need a savior
  • Those who have no status or respect in life are encouraged and ready to receive messages such as “such is the kingdom of heaven” and “come unto me all ye who are weary”
  • Who’s weary? The people who can’t pay their bills. Cant feed their families. Have no status. Not welcomed or involved in the life of the synagogue. Yes, he came for EVERYONE, but the people of the day who had status and power largely rejected him.
  • Think about this- Jesus spoke with authority- he revealed truth to the people
  • He preached outside the synagogue mostly. He ministered to people that were the outcasts of society. The diseased. Women. Men who had done wrong. He sought out the needy and the broken and brought them LIFE
  • Matthew 9:12-13 When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
  • His ministry was one of POWER with SIGNS and WONDERS. The reason he did this was to draw people to a relationship with God- to hear the GOSPEL
  • But he came for the common people! Common people receive
  • Matthew 9:8 Now when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such power to men
  • Matthew 9:33 And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitudes marveled, saying, “It was never seen like this in Israel!”

  • What does it mean to you?
  • If you’re common people. You’re the type of people that Jesus came for!
  • He came for the well heeled, but the first adopters of his message were the miscreants
  • He called the disciples, most of whom were fishermen. Not a noble job at the time
  • Jesus could have gone to the higher ups- but he chose to come to the common man
  • Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes.
  • It was those who were less accepted by society that had the greater acceptance
  • SO if you’ve ever felt like you weren’t good enough, or God couldn’t use you, then its right time that you WOKE UP and realized that God does want to use YOU to further the kingdom!
  • Acts 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.
  • THAT’S what Changes YOU “being with Jesus” if you aren’t spending time with Jesus, he wont be able to USE YOU. But God WANTS to use you. His message of redemption is for YOU
  • 1 Corinthians 1:27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty;
  • This is why he uses former drug addicts, sellers, prostitutes, adulterers, thiefs, liars and all forms of redeemed people to accomplish his mission. The world doesn’t understand it!
  • They even said about Jesus- John 7:15 And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”
  • Paul was able to be used by Jesus!
  • 1 Timothy 1:15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.

  1. Watch yourself!
  • Beware of the scribes
  • 38 Then He said to them in His teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, 39 the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, 40 who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”
  • Here was the problem- these scribes, they wore these long flowing robes to show others that they didn’t have to work and that they were above the common people
  • So they made it a point to sit up in the front of the synagogue, right next to the book of Moses, and look at the people in the crowd. To be seen, to be admired, to be above others, greeted
  • Here’s where it really got bad- they used their position to take advantage of widows who were in need. Now the specifics were unknown, but one could conjecture that they took advantage of them monetarily or physically. Lowest of the low. A man meant for holy purposes, praying out loud and publicly, yet using his position as a cloak for vice.
  • Jesus says- Beware of these guys! Don’t be like them nor should you put your faith in them and follow them
  • A person who would use their spiritual position for personal gain and notoriety should be avoided. They cannot be trusted in Jesus book.
  • Honestly- this verse challenged me- I sit in the front. I enjoy being greeted at walmart. I like the big piece of chicken. Am I a scribe people should be aware of?
  • I’d say no- because I am not taking advantage of widows and I’m not making prayers for pretense- I know in my heart that I am a pastor because God called me and I humbly accept what he wants me to do. I live with a constant awareness of it every day
  • Here’s the main condemnation- Where’s your heart at pastor? Why do you really do what you do? Because these guys didn’t do it for the LORD they did it for THEMSELVES
  • I really hope that I don’t come across that way, and If I do, please lovingly tell me.

  • What does it mean to you?
  • Don’t align yourself with ministers that are self serving
  • 2 tim 4:1-5 READ they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth,
  • 2 Peter 2:1-3
  • How can you spot a false teacher? Does their life match up with the Bible?
  • False teachers- Man pleasers- They tickle the ear, don’t challenge the heart 2. Criticize Biblical Christianity as being ‘too harsh’ or ‘not enough love’ 3. Teach their own wisdom and vision- its all about numbers for numbers sake at the expense of truth 4. Focus on small details instead of the big details- Jesus Christ and Him crucified 5. Hide their false doctrine behind impressive speech and logic- they are so slick you start to believe them 6. More concerned with winning others opinions than actually helping them get better 7. They exploit their followers for financial and personal gain.
  • Counterfeit Christianity: Different source, where does the message come from? Different message, Whats the substance of the message? Different position- moving away from corruption not towards it. Different Character- what kind of people does the message produce? Different appeal- why should you listen to the message? Different fruit- What result does the message have in peoples lives? Different end- Where does the message eventually lead you? There are some ministries where Jesus will say “away from me I never knew you”
  • Watch the scribe spirit in your own heart
  • The scribe spirit can show up in any ministry or any Christian. It’s a self righteous spirit that is serving God for the recognition and not for Jesus . Preach, music, kids, homeless, amc etc
  • Because the scribes such as this will receive condemnation and we don’t want that for ourselves.
  • It can sneak in so subtly where service becomes what you do
  • And I see it- people who just show up to church when its their time to serve or just come to serve and that’s it. Beware of that scribe spirit
  • Its “no one thanked me” “watch me serve” “ I serve so I don’t have to attend” or “My service is my tithing” or “If I’m not seen then Its not worth it”
