Do Not Be Afraid?

afraid

Do not Be afraid- Luke 2:8-12

  • No one likes being afraid. No one likes being startled. I don’t like to do things that make me scared. I’ve had enough fears in my life I don’t need to go and make up things to be scared about. I don’t like horror movies, or evil themed stuff. I want the Good stuff. I want that Bible Joy.
  • There’s a lot to be afraid or fearful nowadays- And if you don’t pay attention- you can get sucked up into the fear- Fear is a product that the media loves to sell.  Let me show you some of their speak
  • Think of the words the media uses- “Possible link” “Officials are worried about” (no link- nothing has happened) “Our nation’s” (large scale story) “shocking new details (when we come back)” “Officials consider the threat to be serious” (which ones aren’t?) “Officials are closely monitoring” (nothing is actually happening) “could perhaps potential might”  “an alarming percentage” (who decides what is alarming) “Deadly” (yes, some do die, but not all) “A new study, a new report, experts fear, experts worry” (they seem to do this a lot) “experts say its just a matter of time” (they have been saying that for years) “But Washingtonians feel” (from one guy they talked to on the street) (From Gavin De Becker)
  • One of the greatest reasons I love Christmas is that we get this reminder- Luke 2:10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.
  • Do NOT be AFRAID- Don’t have fear. Don’t live that way- there’s nothing good in fear- nothing
  • The bible mentions many times “Do not fear” and “do not be afraid” I think its because fear is something that plagues everyone at sometime in their life- its common among humans.
  • Top ten fears people have Social phobias– excessive self consciousness in social situations
  • Agoraphobia- fear of specific places or venues- fear of open spaces Acrophobia– fear of heights can give vertigo Pteromerhanophobia- fear of flying Claustraphobia– fear of enclosed spaces
  • Entomophobia– fear of insects Ophidiophobia– fear of snakes Cynophobia– fear of dogs
  • Astraphobia– fear of storms Trypanophobia- fear of needles
  • Poke around the internet and a large percentage of people worry about: Financial instability, political instability, future pandemics, Global Warming, war, Natural Disaster, and food shortages,
  • What are the 5 primal fears? They are 1) fear of abandonment, 2) loss of identity, 3) loss of meaning, 4) loss of purpose and 5) fear of death, including the fear of sickness and pain.)
  • We are only born with two fears: the fear of falling, and the fear of loud noises.
  • The rest of the fears- we gain through experience, or through our mind. We find stuff to fear
  • But listen to what the bible says about fear-
  • Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ Phil 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
  • John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Psalm 56:3 Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.
  • How do we not fear-
  • One- Control your thoughts-
  • Isaiah 26:3 You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.
  • Philippians 4:8 meditate on these things.
  • 2 Corinthians 10:5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
  • Two- Use and know the word of God
  • Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” Speak scripture to your situation- its what Jesus did
  • Three- Trust God- know that there is no fear if you believe that God is God and he will take care of it
  • Isaiah 35:4 Say to those who are fearful-hearted, “Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, With the recompense of God; He will come and save you.”
  • Proverbs 12:25 Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.

Here’s what those fears really are

  1. We get fearful when we ask- Will I Have provision
  2. If you look at these different fears and worries, one of the biggest ones people have is- how will I be taken care of? Where will I live, what will I eat? Nowadays- what about my job, my healthcare, my earning potential, my retirement etc etc.
  3. In this scenario, I’ll first say its normal, but I would also refer you back to the beginning of this message and help you to understand that the powers that be, want you to be fearful.
  4. You though- you’re different, you’re taking captive every thought and making it obedient to Christ. You’re using the word of God.
  5. Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
  6. What that means is that my PRIMARY goal is to seek the kingdom. To seek Christ and everything else is going to be taken care of. I need constant reminder of this
  7. If you notice you’re heart worrying. You are gripped with fear- you need to do something.
  8. Get some word in you!> The angel said “Don’t be afraid” when Jesus came- so live that out!
  9. Phil 4:19 And my God shall supply all your need. 2 Cor 9:8  always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance Ps 34:10 those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.
  10. Do you believe those truths?
  11. There’s stories of provision throughout the bible- joseph during the famine, manna in the desert, loaves and fishes.
  12. READ 1 Kings 17:1-7 READ  6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.
  13. When it seemed like there wouldn’t be enough- God sent ravens to feed Elijah
  14. Did God not provide Lazarus with new life? Did he not provide many miracles and healings?
  15. Here’s what I know-Psalm 37:25 I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread.
  16. I’ve never met someone who LOVES Jesus, serves, gives, loves, keeps the sin out of their life, not be taken care of. I just haven’t.
  17. many lukewarm inconsistent half committed infrequent God followers who see the fruit of their bad decisions, lie to themselves and think that its God doing it when they’ve done it to themselves.
  18. The message of the Angel was “do not be afraid” God provided a savior- a king- a Lord
  19. Live right- Get your mind right. Use the word to remind you! God’s got you!
  20. Hebrews 13:5 For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
  21. Luke 12:7 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
  22. Believe where you are right now and KNOW that God has ALREADY provided it. He’s already sustained you up until this point and there’s no reason to think differently
  23. Its just because the Devil wants you to stop having joy, stop being generous, stop loving others, to become a miserly miserable miscreant that can’t enjoy what they have because they are so worried about it being taken away- don’t do that.
  • We get fearful when we ask- Will I Have protection
  • Violence drives fear. The truth is that the murder rate is up in 12 American cities. That’s true. Its also true that our local police are no longer empowered to fight crime. That’s true
  • Its also true that our local politicians have created a system where criminals can do what they want without impunity.
  • It might lead you to have fear. But don’t I believe in fear. I know that I can be surrounded by violence and still be OK. It doesn’t mean I don’t take precautions, I just don’t let it control me
  • Here’s what the believers have protection from-
  • The attacks of the devil  2 Thes 3:3 But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.
  • Satan has no power of the Child of God- he doesn’t the promises of scripture declare it.
  • Any weapons formed against you- Isaiah 54:17 No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their righteousness is from Me,” Says the Lord.
  • It might seem like you are behind- but you’re not. The weapon will not prosper.
  • But here’s what happens- you give yourself over to fear- you think about something and you ruminate on it, and then next thing you know, you can’t even function because you’re afraid of something happening to you.
  • You must take captive every thought and make it obedient. You must remember the scriptures.
  • Psalm 91:1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
  • Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Psalm 34:7 The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, And delivers them. Psalm 138:7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me; You will stretch out Your hand Against the wrath of my enemies, And Your right hand will save me. Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ Exodus 14:14 The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”
  • This message of “Fear not” isn’t new- its what God has been saying for thousands of years to his people- probably because people are prone to fear- people give themselves over to it.
  • Think of how much money is spent on locks, passwords, defense, safety etc. We are concerned about that stuff. And I say- I lock my doors, I don’t go to stupid places at stupid times with stupid people. But you can do all that and STILL live in fear- I’m not going to do it. Angel says “Do not fear”
  • Hebrews 13:6 So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
  • Honestly- what can he do? Nothing. To live is Christ and die is gain.
  • 2 Timothy 4:18 Romans 8:31
  • Nahum 1:7 The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.
  • We get fearful when we ask- Will I Have peace
  • You will be taken care of, you will be protected, but I don’t just think that’s an existential idea- I think that peace- the emotion of stableness and tranquility will come to those In christ
  • John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
  • Understanding the victory of Jesus is to understand the victory that we have over the world
  • Much of this comes from what we will lose, what will happen to us, when we will die
  • But the truth of the promises of scripture should realign our priorities to the things of God so we can experience his peace right now! It’s a right now in the midst of the fire peace-
  • 2 Thes 3:16 Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way.
  • How do we do that pragmatically?
  • Keep your mind on him Isaiah 26:3 You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You. (Don’t think about things that are not of God)
  • Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
  • Let peace rule Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. (I’m not letting anything steal my peace)
  • Keep the peace with others– Hebrews 12:14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: (You may not have peace because you create relationship problems) James 3:18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
  • Don’t be quarrelsome1 Peter 3:11 Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it. (what the quickest way to bring peace to this situation)
  • You will get the peace that passes all understanding- even in the midst of turmoil.
  • Will I have purpose
  • We all, at some point think about our life and what matters about it
  • And if you listen to society- if you’re insignificant, you’re insignificant
  • Young people- your life will not have meaning because you are a social media influencer. Life is not about being famous. Life is about serving God- Find your purpose in HIM
  • You need to be obedient to what God asks you to do- but your MAIN purpose is to
  • Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all.
  • And maybe you don’t thin your life matters, or that you made some bad decisions- angel says fear not-
  • The purpose of your life is found in losing your life and making God’s purpose go forward
  • God wants to affect the world- and he needs you to do it- so in whatever small or large way- if you’re honoring God, and bringing others to do the same- you’re living out your purpose
  • Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
  • Psalm 138:8 The Lord will perfect that which concerns me;
  • God knows what is going on- he wants to work out that which concerns him and he’s concerned with YOU
  • You need not be concerned! He sent his son Jesus for YOU to give you purpose in HIM- Your life matters to HIM
  • Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
