Their Angels Always See

  • Matthew 18:10-14 READ Their Angels watch over them
  • Have you ever lost something valuable and then turned your house upside down trying to look for it? Sure- we all have.  A key, a wallet, a piece of jewelry, a phone.
  • Have you ever lost a kid? Now that’ll wake you up. Worried you cant find your kid is the worst
  • How valuable do you think you are to God? You think he cares about the ones he loses?
  • I’m gonna say yes. John 3:16 for God so loved the world- And he does! He loves us!
  • This scripture describes the lengths at which Jesus goes to rescue one person to him.
  1. Watch yourself.
  2. V 10 Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones
  3. Again, in this discourse of Matthew 18 its important that you understand that the little ones are his disciples- That’s who they are- Its in the past Sermons. Last ones actions, this one heart
  4. And so Jesus says 5 Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.
  5. 6 “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin
  6. And so here he says- Watch yourself that you do not despise- it’s a verb- despise, contemn, scorn, disdain mean to regard as unworthy of one’s notice or consideration. despise may suggest an emotional response ranging from strong dislike to loathing. implies a vehement condemnation of a person or thing as low, vile, feeble, or ignominious.
  7. Jesus says- if someone is my disciple and you are my disciple- Don’t regard them as unworthy of your consideration. Don’t have negative emotions towards them. (we covered this before)
  8. When you ‘take heed’ you watch how you talk and interact with his disciples, but you also watch your heart- Its not enough to just act well towards them- you must feel well towards them- All of Christs disciples are to be valued. (Jesus repeats himself- we repeat it for him)
  9. Luke 6:31 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.
  10. This is a high bar that Jesus sets- this living in Christs love and mercy- is a demanding existence- this scripture specifically means that how you feel- feelings towards your fellow disciples, church members,. (pray heart to change- get to know stories what they have been through)
  11. John 15:12 This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
  12. He loved us- we love others who are his- that’s what we’re supposed to do.
  13. But how do we do that?
  14. Phil 3: 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
  15. You have got to have a sense of sober judgment about yourself- you must jettison any self pride or self grandiose feelings. (Years ago- I wont talk to that person- yes you will)
  16. Eph 4:32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
  17. What exactly do you think that scripture means? To forgive others? Bc you were forgave
  18. 1 Jn 4:20 READ- Could it be any clearer? We must love one another. In word and action
  19. We walk it out with Romans 12:10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;
  20. This truth is so important- My kids love each other because I never tolerated fighting
  • Disciples are valuable
  • I think some people are really dismissive of others because they don’t see them as their fellow family members in the Body of Christ- I hug Christians “we’re spending eternity”
  • It freaks people out- but I’m ok with it- You ever had a witness of the spirit? WOW
  • V 10 in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven.
  • Think about that- The little ones (disciples) have angels right next to the Father
  • But its “their” there are angels- Not a, not two, angels- a group of them
  • I think we don’t talk about angels enough. I think that we dismiss them as weird.
  • But that’s not what the bible says- Bible talks a bit about Angels.
  • Psalm 91:11 For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.
  • You have angels if you are a disciple. You have a group of them- they are with God-
  • I think having this mindset changes two things- how you think about others- and how you think about yourself-
  • If others have them- in front of Father God and you’re not doing them right?
  • And that means you have angels in heaven on your behalf- before the father-
  • Hebrews 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?
  • This isn’t a new concept of angels-
  • Genesis 28:12b and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
  • Exodus 23:20 “Behold, I send an Angel before you to keep you in the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared.
  • Da 6:22 My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, so that they have not hurt me,
  • This is Bible folks-  Luke 4:10 ‘He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you,’
  • But here’s main point about it- this isn’t about the power of angels- its about the value of a person- its not that angels have power for us- this context is in the value of others
  • Think about this- if someone walked into a room with an angel standing on either side of them- you’d spruce up- you’d wonder why they have that kind of presence
  • Yesterday- having bbq- Police officer walked in- kinda made scene- GM came over to meet me- He said- I thought maybe you knew something bc you were talking to the police
  • Because they have angels- whomever you think doesn’t- they do. Treat accordingly.
  • All of us were lost
  • Because there’s a truth here in v 11 “seek to save that which was lost”
  • We were all lost. Whatever influence, money, esteem, skills, achievements, mean absolutely nothing without Jesus- You were lost. Super lost. You couldn’t find your belly button
  • Somehow that translates to thinking of yourself more highly than you ought.
  • Depending on the bible that you have- you may notice that Matthew 18:11 is omitted
  • The bible is based on manuscripts and the earliest and most reliable ones do not have this verse in there- therefore- to be true to the text- they did not include it?
  • Where did it come from? Most believe that someone who was copying it chose to insert
  • Luke 19:10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
  • Maybe as a header? Maybe because they thought that it went with the parable of the sheep?
  • So its not that big of a deal, because its made right in many bibles- but it changes no doctrine
  • Luke 19:10 is reliable. The point of this story is reliable.

Here’s the main thing to take away from this scripture- Jesus came to save

  • 1 Timothy 1:15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
  • This mindset frees you from thinking less of others because you think of less of yourself
  • But here’s a truth of this- Christ came to seek you. He came for you- that’s why he came- to seek and save that which was lost. That was his job-
  • God has, and will continue to pursue you until the day that you die-
  • Luke 5:31-32 Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
  • When you down, out and less than, Jesus came in and said “I came for you”
  • And that doesn’t mean you think more of yourself- you think more of GOD
  • Ps John- heart- You think he’s walking around patting his own back? “I was dying and saved”
  • Ro 5:6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
  • It wasn’t when we were GOOD that he did it- it was because HE is GOOD.
  • And since we all were lost- we all should love 1 Jn 4:9-14 Sent his son- we ought to love
  • We are all sheep
  • 12 “What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying?
  • Jesus is using a sheep example here to prove a point about value of disciples and how we should treat them- “if you had 100 gold rings you wouldn’t worry about the 99 you had, you would go and find the one that you lost”
  • “what do you think” yeah man- I get it. Any of us would because even one is part of the flock- one is worth it-
  • Man who was the only that came to church- ‘one shows up I feed him’ all have value.
  • When you think of yourself as a sheep- you just realize you’re one of the herd.
  • I don’t have sheep- I have chickens- They all are the same to me-
  • Is 53:6 we like sheep have gone astray; Ps 119:176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep;
  • That’s the word picture of the Bible because its so clear about who we are as people
  • Left to our own devices- we wander- we end up going astray- we leave the herd.
  • And if you keep this mindset- you will allow yourself to be shepherded by the great shepherd.
  • Jesus is telling his disciples he cares about the one- not at the expense of the 99- he knows he has them- but He is greatly concerned with that one that isn’t in the flock
  • So much so he leaves to go get the lost one- even to the point of death-
  • John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.
  • Jesus died so that you could be shepherded by him- so that he could protect you.
  • Don’t be the wayward sheep- don’t drift away- don’t end up being the one be 99
  • 1 Peter 2:25 For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
  • Let him shepherd and oversee you Psa 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
  • You make Jesus rejoice
  • This is really wonderful-  13 And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.
  • Yes- Jesus loves you and is excited that you are following him- I’m sure.
  • Ze 3:17 The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save;  He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”
  • Ps 149:4 the Lord takes pleasure in His people;
  • Ps 147:11 The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy.
He has pleasure in you! But he is really excited when that wayward sheep comes to him!
  • People love pets- last year the ransomes lost their dog- youngs went and found it.
  • Family was distraught- the dog was out in the wilderness- it was emotional
  • We care about our pets! But how much more over a lost soul that is saved?
  • This is why it bothers me when people get tired of salvation messages- God cares that there’s one person in here that needs salvation- he’s willing to leave you to go after the one- why? Because the lost one is lost. You’re found- you don’t have to be sought after.
  •  99 sit there- stay with the herd while Jesus goes after the one who got away.
  • You are not supposed to perish
  • Because- 14 Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.
  • God does not want anyone to go to Hell. None. He doesn’t want it.
  • 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. “Not willing that any should perish”
  • God takes no pleasure in the destruction of men- he takes no joy in a sinner destroyed.
  • He cares about every single one of his sheep- If you talked to any sort of herd farmer and asked them how many he’d like to lose they would say none. They all have value to him.
  • Ezekiel 18:23 Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?” says the Lord God, “and not that he should turn from his ways and live?
  • And this value- of disciples- should change how we treat them- what it took for them to be saved when they were the one-lost- and we were all lost- and now they have angels that are in heaven ministering to God on our behalf- and he’ll leave the 99 WHY?
  • Ezekiel 18:32 For I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies,” says the Lord God. Therefore turn and live!”
  • 1 Ti 2:4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
  • That’s what he wants! Everyone to come to the truth! Everyone to be saved!
  • And the role that we play in it- many many roles- but specifically today- is how we treat his disciples- how we respect and love them- understand that we were lost, we all are sheep- and that whatever we can to do help God get the one- its worth.
  • Today you can become one of Jesus sheep- He is leaving the 99 for you.
