But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart”.
1 Samuel 16:7
Do you know the difference between a good tree and a bad tree? Both start from a seed, both grow tall and strong with long branches and thick boughs of leaves. For many years, a good tree and a bad tree may look identical in nature, but when they begin to produce fruit, then you will be able to differentiate the two.
I was once mentored by a man who preached the truth and had strong spiritual giftings. This man taught me from the Scriptures accurately, showed me love and respect, and prophesied accurately over me. Then one day, he took offense with me and the relationship ended. He began to sow discord and division in the hearts of those I loved; his true character began to show.
There are many among the church like this man, they look and sound like a Christian should. They say all the right things, they hold powerful spiritual giftings and by all appearances are devout Christians who walk closely with Christ. But there is coming a day when they will be exposed by their fruit, there is coming a day soon when everything done in the dark will be brought to light. A person may prophesy, but do they submit to leadership? They may have a powerful gift of teaching, but do they show partiality? They may boldly proclaim Christ, but what is in their heart? It takes time for fruit to be grown and cultivated, but what is hidden will not remain hidden.
What are you truly after? Some seek after the heart of Christ, and some seek His power. Some desire His presence, and some desire the throne. Some exalt Christ in their heart, and some exalt themselves. Do not be deceived! Repent and turn your heart back to Him, lest on that Day, you hear “Depart from Me, for I never knew you!”.
