I CAN GET DISTRACTED FAIRLY EASY. I set out vacuuming and I spy dirty laundry and so I begin doing laundry. While picking up dirty clothes, I see dust and start dusting. While dusting, I collect dirty dishes and start doing dishes. While doing dishes, I look outside and see my grass needs to be mowed and so I mow the lawn. I come inside from mowing the lawn and realize the thing I set out to do never got done. This is a little dramatized, but you get the picture.
Can you relate? Such as it is in the spiritual. God gives you an assignment and you start out on the right path, but the devil always throws in a curveball in order to distract you. Next thing you know, you’re all over the place and have never accomplished that which God gave you to accomplish. While those may be good things, they are not the God thing and you are only anointed for the God thing. I know a few people that have their hands in everything and by all appearances they are accomplishing much, but they never finish that work which the Lord has commanded them to do.
Matt and I were talking the other day about a pastor who quit pastoring to go do something else. Then he quit that to start something new. I’m not even sure what he’s even doing now, but I know he’s not doing that which God called him to. Maybe he was bored, maybe he wanted more honor; I don’t know. Here’s my point: if God called him to shepherd, then he is to shepherd until the Lord returns for him or calls him home.
God has not changed His mind about the gifts He gives and He expects that we use those gifts He has given us and do that work until He calls us home. Does it get mundane? Sometimes, but quitting and switching jobs because you are bored is not an option. God may assign you a new field, He has that authority.
However, you are not anointed but for that which God anointed you for. Not only are you not anointed, it is disobedience and has the potential to lead you down a path away from God. Be warned. If God has called you as a door keeper, then you keep that door until He returns. Paul was told to go to Jerusalem and it was prophesied that in Jerusalem he would be imprisoned so people tried to stop him from going, “Then Paul answered, What mean you to weep and break my heart? For I am ready not just to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” (Acts 21:12-13)
Paul was determined that nothing and no one would hinder him from doing what the Holy Spirit commanded him to do. He was obedient to his death. Jesus had the same mind to go to the cross. He never allowed anyone to distract Him from finishing the work the Father sent Him to do. ““For the Lord God will help Me; Therefore I will not be disgraced; Therefore I have set My face like a flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed.” Isaiah 50:7 NKJV
He could have just come and did a lot of good works, but His purpose was to destroy the work of the devil on the cross. He came to die for the sins of mankind. Like Jesus, Paul set his face like a stone that he should not be moved from finishing his race. What assignment has the Lord given you? Are you doing THAT? Or are you staying busy, accomplishing nothing? If you are not staying in your assigned field, you are not doing the work of the Lord. All fleshly work will be burned.
Ask yourself these questions: am I seeking honor from man or God? Am I bored with this work? Am I currently being distracted from that which He called me to? Only the work He gave you to do will stand. “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.”I Corinthians 3:11-15 NKJV#runyourrace
