BOASTING IS SIN. Do you know a boaster? “I did this! I did that! Me. Me. Me. Look what I have done.” I really struggle to be around an arrogant man. I know a few people like this and it’s tough being in any kind of relationship with them. It’s one thing to applaud achievement, but quite another to boast.
Boasting is based on the false assumption that whatever we accomplished, we did as a result of our own initiative and abilities, ignoring the role of God and others in our success, taking all glory for ourselves. You may have exercised discipline to get to the place your at, but you did not do it alone. Who gave you your body or the ability to think and to act? Who gave you your gifts and talents? You did not create yourself, nor give yourself the body you have or your looks. What do you have that was not given you? Besides ALL that God has done; somebody, somewhere along the way believed in you and encouraged you.
Why do you boast as if YOU did this alone? “Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.” James 4:15-16 The root of all boasting is arrogance (an exaggerated sense of one’s importance) and pride. Did you know that God resists the proud? But gives more grace to the humble?
If you are a braggart, God is resisting you (this is not a good thing). Is your language “I, I, I or me, me, me”? Do you seek a title among men or will you in humility take the towel of a servant? Jesus told a parable concerning taking the lower seat at a wedding. He tells us that if we take the place of honor at the chief seat, we will be told to go lower. But if we in humility take the lower place, we will be brought higher. He is speaking here to our pride and importance of self. IF we exalt ourselves, THEN we will be abased. But he that humbles himself, will be exalted.
In layman’s terms, if you honor and exalt yourself, you will be put to shame. It is one thing for God to enlarge your territory and promote you, He has this right; but it’s quite another for you to do it yourself. God knows our motives in all things. Will you abase yourself and take the towel of servanthood? Jesus did. He has all the titles: King of kings and Lord of lords, but He in humility chose the towel and the way of the cross. It comes down to this- are you living to be seen and praised by men or seen of God? “
How is it possible for you to believe [how can you learn to believe], you who [are content to seek and] receive praise and honor and glory from one another, and yet do not seek the praise and honor and glory which come from Him Who alone is God?” John 5:44 How do you control pride? Reckon yourself dead to sin. Crucify your arrogant flesh. Submit yourself to God and resist the devil. Draw near to God and cleanse your hands and purify your hearts. Mourn your sin and humble yourself in His sight, and He will lift you up. #runyourrace
