Leave The Boat

Leave the boat Matt 4:18-22

  • I watch a couple youtube channels about sailing- it’s a fantasy. Go and live on the sea
  • The truth is, its never going to happen- One- I don’t don’t know how 2. I don’t have a boat 3. It would be scary 4. God hasn’t called me to that.
  • We must do what God has called us to- and we have all been called to leave the boat and follow
  • Jesus calls the disciples. He goes and he finds Peter and Andrew, he calls, and they immediately follow. He sees two other brothers, and he calls them as well.

What can we get from this scripture?

  1. When Jesus calls, Respond
  • I was always taught as a child that when an adults asks you do to something, you do it, without commentary. You just do it. You’re a child. You can dissent when you’re an adult.
  • Some people were never taught that way, so when it comes to the things of God, they seem to always want to discuss, and prolong the decision process- this wasn’t the case with these guys
  • They immediately v20 They immediately v22
  • Jesus shows up, seemingly out of no where- and calls these guys according to the book of Luke, they may have heard Jesus preach before this time, but they were still willing to get moving
  • “Immediately” there’s certainty to that word. There’s a powerful response to that word. It’s a right now- I’m doing it type of word.
  • I know I talk about Military a lot- you probably get tired of it- but most of you didn’t serve. You don’t understand what its like to take military orders- you’ve never been broken- immediate
  • compliance- Yes sergeant- moving sergeant. There’s no dissent
  • Matthew 7:26-2726 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
  • It’s foolish. Why would you argue with Mr Jesus? What benefit is there to that? None.
  • But people do it all the time- they know the truth, they hear the truth but they don’t respond
  • It’s the “I think my way is better “ version of Christianity.
  • Some of you have been going to church for years, know what God has asked, and don’t move
  • The Bible is a record where the obedient are praised and the disobedient are scorned
  • We all know this- its not a new revelation- but we all, at times will operate in delayed obedience
  • What does it mean to you
  • Are you dragging your feet on Jesus? Has he come by, and spoken to you, but you have been taking your time, and not responding to him?
  • Here’s where the “faith and not works” crowd always chimes in- the “Jesus paid it all” crowd. Jesus did pay it all, but he doesn’t do it all.
  • James 2:14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?
  • Those are challenging words for people that struggle with action and responsiveness
  • This following Jesus is a right now- get to work- lets go- endeavor
  • Matthew 7:21 21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
  • Years ago the Lord had laid on my heart to perform an action- and I was reluctant- the HS spoke to C to get to me- called that person right then and there on the phone- could take you intersection- you have to act immediately or else it wont happen. Get moving
  • James describes the people who refuse to answer the call of God on their life-
  • James 1: 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
  • We must be diligent in our callings- we must give it our full attention- we can’t let up
  • 2 Peter 1:5But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge,
  • There was a time I was in great shape- I’m not anymore- Eating on T-day- but I don’t care- I’m diligent in that- I’m somewhat- but it doesn’t matter to me as much. I want brownies- not abs
  • But when it comes to the things of God- we have to stay diligent- we have to be prepared.
  • Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
  • Titus 1:1616 They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being [a]abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.
  • We can’t just be professors- we have to be doers- Talk is cheap
  1. When Jesus asks, give
  • Now-whenever a preacher starts talking about giving- some people think it means that something is awry- last month we eclipsed last years giving already. We’ve grown 7% this year
  • This isnt a backdoor way to talk about money- its just where we are at in scripture
  • You can’t get away from the fact that these guys gave up- gave a lot to Jesus in this scripture
  • The men who left their trade- gave up their financial future to follow Jesus.
  • V22 They left their boat and their father.
  • We read this so fast- that we miss it- This was their future- They weren’t going to tech school or college- this wasn’t a paid internship. If dad fishes- you fish. That’s it. That’s your life. And they left it all to follow Jesus- Pretty admirable isn’t it?
  • But look at Zebedee. He doesn’t scoff at the idea either. Notice there’s nothing in the scriptures that says that he pushed back on Jesus about it- He just lets them leave. They are losing their future business, but so is Zebedee. He’s giving his best to Jesus. He’s offering up his future. His sons, his business, his livelihood etc. All of it, and he really doesn’t get any recognition for it
  • It’s admirable.
  • Here’s what we can 100% say is true about this man- He was a fisherman who had two sons who went to follow Jesus and he was left behind with the Fish.
  • But there’s two other scriptures in Matthew that talk about the sons of Zebedee
  • Matthew 20:20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from Him. 21 And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.”
  • Matthew 27:56  among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
  • Here’s what we can get from this- The family of Zebedee maintained a relationship with Jesus throughout his ministry, and that they were there with Jesus at his crucifixion.
  • One can assume that either- The family of Zebedee believed that Jesus was the promised messiah and released their sons, or they were convinced he was messiah eventually and followed his ministry- or both. Its clear they gave up their sons and their business for Jesus
  • Here’s what I know- Hebrews 13:1616 But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
  • God was pleased with Zebedee’s sacrifice. It may have gone unnoticed during that time, but it didn’t go unrecognized by God- The gift of his sons grew the kingdom
  • What does it mean to you
  • At what level are you willing to give sacrificially to Jesus? Time, money, skills, life, family?
  • What’s the limit of your sacrifice? What are you willing to Give?
  • Luke 12:16-21 Storing up for yourself and not being generous with God is not good.
  • Scripture declares and demands that we should give God our everything.
  • 1 Tim 6:1818 Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share,
  • Stinginess isn’t of God. We’re supposed to be ridiculously generous with no expectations.
  • Specifically in the church!
  • Matt 25:25-40  inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’
  • 1 John 3:1717 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
  • Galatians 6:1010 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.
  • In addition to selfishness, often times people are limited in their generosity because they aren’t in a position to give because they’ve overextended themselves. Not just financially, but time wise, or commitments. Don’t be so emotionally, physically, spiritually overdrawn you have nothing to share. Plan your generosity- be prepared for it.
  • Ephesians 4:2828 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.
  1. Where Jesus goes, follow
  • These guys didn’t know where they were going or what it was going to take- but they followed- and apparently stuck with the call- they followed it through with action and followed.
  • The beginning of this message was respond- act- but following is an ongoing endeavor
  • Following is an ongoing action-
  • These guys said yes, and then followed Jesus- we can see it through the Gospels-
  • John 12:26 26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.
  • Following Jesus is a constant all day every day endeavor- we must never quit and give up. ever
  • I’ve seen people give up- on lots of stuff in life- and I think that sometimes people give up on Jesus just because they are tired of it. It takes commitment to follow Jesus
  • And its hard- because you never know what is going to be asked of you.
  • Heb 11:8By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
  • You don’t know where you’re going – or where hes going to take you or what he’s going to require of you- you just don’t- but you have to trust him. You have to follow him.
  • Matthew 16:24 24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
  • Taking up that Cross is death to self- Its death to your own plans, dreams and wants.
  • And for some people- that’s really hard- for most of us it is- because we want our own life.
  • 1 Peter 2:21 21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for [a]us, leaving [b]us an example, that you should follow His steps:
  • What were his steps? Following the father’s will. Following his plan. Giving up his life.
  • What does it mean to  you?
  • Are you dying daily? Are you crucifying the flesh daily?Luke 9:23 Do you remind yourself of your call when you threw down your nets and told Jesus you’d go wherever he led?
  • It’s a great life following Jesus! It’s the best!
  • Here’s whats interesting tho- everyone knows what submitted looks like. You can tell if people are submitted to the boss, their spouse, the coach, whoever is in leadership- and you can see when someone is submitted to Christ.
  • College- Hell bucket- stench of death- Rebellion is a pungent stench- submission is a sweet aroma.
  • John 10:27 27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
  • Just follow Jesus- submit to him. Love him. Love submission. Love following. Praise God we have a savior.
  • John 15:14 14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.
