Is This Not The Carpenter’s Son

  • Is this not the carpenter’s son? Matthew 13:53-58
  • Here we get to the end of chapter 13 and we see Jesus around people, after his parables, a few healings, and he’s telling these people- I’m God- I’m telling you how to live and what to do
  • Their response- “Isn’t this the carpenters son?”
  • Faced with the reality of Jesus the messiah, in their midst, they don’t embrace him- they reject him. And by rejecting him, they reject everything about him-
  • No different than today- most people don’t have a problem with Jesus and what he does, they have a problem with Jesus and what he requires- Submission- life change- direction change
  • Totally fine hanging out with the ‘heal me and talk to me Jesus’ not the “submit to me” Jesus
  1. Question his authority “where did this man get his wisdom”
  2. In this story- they question his Authority- its documented in the other Gospels as well-
  3. To them- they understood the story- that the King of Israel was going to come from within them, but when Jesus came as the king- they rejected what he said because they didn’t like it
  4. To them- after hearing what Jesus had to say- their thoughts went to- “who is he to tell us”
  5. Its questioning his authority. What Jesus was saying was transformational- they didn’t like it
  6. They were being oppressed by Rome and wanted Jesus to deliver them from sin.
  7. Where did this man get his wisdom?!?!?!
  8. The father- Matthew 11:27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.
  9. God became flesh through Jesus and so his wisdom came from God because he was God.
  10. This idea, of the supreme authority of Jesus must be internalized- its why when people say “I believe in God” It doesn’t sit well with me as a declaration of Faith
  11. There’s something powerful when you say that you believe in Jesus- it changes the conversation. – when you don’t you reduce him to a carpenters son- but he’s MUCH MORE
  12. Think about this- only God can grant eternal life- only him- no one else.
  13. John 17:2 as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.
  14. So when Jesus says that he has authority over all flesh and that he can give eternal life- that’s huge
  15. Jesus said- Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
  16. Ephesians 1:21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
  17. Philippians 2:9-10 Says his name is above every name and that every knee will bow-
  18. And we sit here- and we talk about these people- and say “how could they say this”
  19. But we say this- we say this when we deny his authority over our lives- his rightful ownership over all we have, do, are and be.
  20. There’s a streak of rebellion in all of us that has to be destroyed- it must-
  21. And as always- I just assume that if there is rebellion in me, there’s some in you- it’s the “did God really say” mindset- that really- seeks to question Gods authority- we love our free will
  22. Colossians 2:10 1 Peter 3:22 Matthew 28:17 Psalm 8:6
  23. Wouldn’t it be better to submit to his authority?
  24. Submission is easy- rebellion is hard- I haven’t had the easiest bosses in my life
  25. Having to do 5 cold calls after 5 on Wednesday before thanksgiving is no fun-
  26. But he’s the boss- He’s paying my wage- I owe him my time and my hours-
  27. What do we owe God? Is Jesus just a carpenters son, or is he MORE- Do we minimize HIM
  28. James 4:7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
  29. People don’t want to submit to God, government, boss, pastors, anyone- So he’s just a Carpenter’s son- Just a normal bearded guy who told some good stories.
  30. 1 Peter 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, t
  31. Romans 8:7 1 Corinthians 2:14 natural man can’t receive the things of God
  32. The answer is to submit- don’t say ‘where did he get his wisdom from” in your heart- SUBMIT
  • Bring him down to your level “is this not the carpenters son”
  • The crux of “is this not the carpenters son” is the notion that Jesus is just another commoner- which- at face value- the Jews appreciated- born from humble beginnings and all- but when it turned to his authority- they minimized who he was- brought him down to their status
  • He’s just a carpenters son- nothing more- just a runofthemill worker guy-
  • Matthew 13:55 Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas?
  • John 6:42 And they said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
  • This is why I get so frustrated with people who have the buddy Jesus- like somehow they are on some different set of rules than I am- I find it disrespectful- I really do-
  • My dad and I have not the best relationship- but I’d never call him by his first name, or an uncle, a doctor, a police officer, I’m just not that guy- but really- some people get some sort of pleasure about minimizing the elevation of a person and bringing them down to their level.
  • Isaiah 53:2-3 READ Prophecy was fulfilled- he didn’t come to be esteemed-  but he should have been- by us! Some did- most didn’t- they were in the “he’s just a carpenters son.
  • This message- of Christmas- the lowly baby arrived not with fanfare, demands, or flourish
  • Luke 2:5-7 READ that’s not the arrival of an earthly king- some kings realized it- people didn’t.
  • John 1:10-11 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
  • People want leaders who are ‘men of the people’ but then don’t want them to be higher- They want the carpenters son- a jab they can throw to make him less than he is-
  • Love the stories of kings, rulers and presidents who serve in the military service
  • Matthew 26:67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands,
  • Again- this is prophecy-  Psalm 22:6-8 READ
  • Wouldn’t it be better to ascribe him greatness
  • Wouldn’t it be better to just worship him, and praise him for who he is and what he’s done?
  • Jesus comes to us, and loves us, and was one of us, but once we get the realization of who he is, would we just take him for granted? Not give up a seat, stand up to greet, bow in adoration?
  • Matthew 2:11 READ Brang gifts and bowed down.
  • Psalm 95:6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down;Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
  • Matthew 28:17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.
  • You may just think you’re half a step above or even below Jesus- but that’s not me I know where I am in the pecking order, and Jesus is at the top. He is not just a carpenters son. No
  • John 4:23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.
  • Be offended “so they were offended at him”
  • Just a few verses ago- Jesus said Matthew 11:6 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.” But apparently those guys didn’t get the memo. They are offended
  • Now the translation of this word is a bit questionable, skandalizō skan-dal-id’-zo
  • To “scandalize”; from G4625; to entrap, that is, trip up (figuratively stumble [transitively] or entice to sin, apostasy or displeasure): – (make to) offend.
  • People get offended- what someone says, does, or doesn’t do. Its really what you think you deserve. “this dude is a carpenters son, who does he think he is”?
  • This “offended” is much more than “I cant believe he’d say this” its more of a “This guy is an apostate that isn’t from God and what he is doing is scandalous because he’s leading astray”
  • Isaiah 8:14 He will be as a sanctuary, But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense
  • To both the houses of Israel, As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
  • The trap and the snare is the reality that people have to face their need for a savior and must submit to his Lordship. Submit to his kingdom- his rule and reign.
  • So when they are calling what he is doing a scandal, they are actually quite right, they just don’t realize that they are the fulfilment of the prophecy and unless they repent- they aren’t going to make it to heaven.
  • This is what was prophesied and what Jesus expected- that people would reject him.
  • John 4:44 For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.
  • So we can’t expect that everyone we preach to and tell about Jesus is going to receive him.
  • 1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
  • John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
  • It doesn’t mean we give up on the process tho- 1 cor 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 1 Peter 2:8
  • Wouldn’t it be better to accept him?
  • Here’s the problem with the human condition- we have so much difficulty changing our view and belief of something once we’ve decided that something is that way.
  • Even in the face of insurmountable evidence, we still choose to not believe. We see things that we know aren’t true and we believe them and we see things that are true and we deny them
  • It takes an honest assessment of the facts and a heart that desires truth to see it.
  • Its like when Pilate said “what is truth” he desired it, but refused to see it and believe it
  • Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
  • Just confess Jesus as Lord! Believe the story of salvation! Put your trust in HIM
  • He is NOT just a carpenters son- he is NOT he is LORD he is GOD he is SAVIOR
  • 2 Peter 3:9 says Jesus is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. HE WANTS TO SAVE US FROM OUR SINS He wants to set us FREE
  • 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
  • Miss out on blessings.  “He did not do many mighty works”
  • These people like many others simply missed out because of their unbelief.
  • I can’t fully explain it because I don’t fully understand it, but based on scripture, our belief works in concert with Jesus.
  • Let me tell you a story about two guys who had belief-
  • Read Matthew 9:27-31
  • Matthew 9:28 And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.”
  • Did they look up and say “oh- just a carpenters son” NO they said YES LORD
  • Jesus’ willingness and the agreement of the people in need worked together for a miracle
  • Its biblical. – Now I’m not a guy that says you wont get it because you didn’t believe hard enough- that’s a destructive teaching, but the bible record is clear- Jesus wants you to believe
  • And so when people, or a person. Flat out refuse to believe, it appears that Jesus doesn’t do much there- He moves on to people who want it- who believe- who want what he has
  • Mark 6:5 Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.
  • He can and will based on his own will and purpose- but
  • Wouldn’t’ it be better to believe?
  • Wouldn’t it be better to put your full faith and trust in Jesus ability to do what he said he would do and see him move in your life?
  • Wouldn’t it be better to experience a life filled with the blessings of God?
  • Wouldn’t it be better to see him as MORE than a Carpenters son?
  • What areas of your life, has Jesus come into where he said- I want to heal you of that pain, I want to set you free from that addiction, repair that relationship, free you from your sin
  • But you stood there, looked at him in disbelief and thought “He can’t do it”
  • Mark 11:23-24 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. 24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.
  • I believe that word- I believe WHATEVER. I believe WHOEVER. I believe BE REMOVED.
  • My God is so big, so strong and so mighty there’s nothing my God cannot do-
  • Mark 11:22 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God.
  • Just have faith- Just have it. Just believe it. Just put your trust in it and watch what mighty works he can do.
  • Mark 9:23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
  • Matthew 21:22 And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”
  • Would you believe today?
  • First time salvation
  • Belief for something bigger than yourself.
