CHOOSE YOU THIS DAY WHOM YOU will serve. Joshua’s words and a very popular saying to have hanging on your wall, but do you mean it? Here’s the whole scripture: “And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”” Joshua 24:15
This word “choose” is a Hebrew word often used of God’s sovereign, purposeful, deliberate choices such as His choice of Israel. Used here in this verse specifically, it refers to people’s choices that are deliberate, intentional results of thought, plan or desire. It’s drawing a line in the sand after careful consideration of the cost of following Jesus. As Jesus said, “Count the cost”, are you able to finish the race that you start? Are you willing and able to separate and go the distance? It’s not a spur of the moment choice, and it’s not based on feeling.
Will you completely come out from the world and its evil? Because you cannot have it both ways, neither can you stay neutral. You either serve the gods of this world or you serve the God of all heaven and earth: make a choice and weigh your options. There can be no serving God and living in the world. Jesus said, ” Take up your cross and follow Me” or don’t. Forsake all or embrace the world. Crucify your flesh or indulge it. These are your choices. So I present the declaration again: Choose you this day whom you will serve. I implore you to choose life in Jesus Christ and never look back.
