GOD CARES MORE ABOUT YOUR character than your ability. There was a girl on my daughter’s team several years ago who had some natural athletic ability. Man, she was pretty amazing. Her mom was always complaining that she couldn’t ever get on a winning team, but as I watched her over the season, it wasn’t the team’s fault. This kid was uncoachable.
She would roll her eyes at the coach and talk back. She threw temper tantrums when she didn’t get her way. She was a ball hog. Instead of encouraging her teammates, she put them down when they made a mistake. Her great ability was negated by her bad character. She could have gone far but instead became a parable.
What’s your character look like? Are you teachable? Or do you roll your eyes when someone tries to coach you? “Poverty and shame will come to him who disdains correction, But he who regards a rebuke will be honored.” Prov 13:18 “Whoso loves instruction loves knowledge: but he who hates reproof is stupid” Prov 12:1 You can have great abilities and gifts and faith to move mountains, but none of that matters if your character is soured by your pride.
God has put people in your life to sharpen you, walk beside you and help you be the best that you can be, but you have to allow others to speak into your life. If not, the consequences can be devastating. The Scriptures declare that God’s children are to submit to one another in humility. God rejects the proud but gives grace to the humble and the coachable. I will take character over ability every day of the week. #runyourrace
