Is Your Church Silent?
In far too many churches today, there is preaching of only part of the story. We hear about the women who was caught in adultery and how Jesus doesn’t condemn her. We hear that God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.
These churches are loud on grace, forgiveness, and love. But they are only giving part of story and the part they are silent on is foundational for spending eternity with God.
They are silent on sin.
Jesus does tell the woman caught in adultery that He does not condemn her. But then He tells her “…go and sin no more.” (John 8:11) And it is true that God is faithful and just to forgive “If we confess our sins…”. (1 John 1:9)
Though many churches may not talk about sin, God’s word is clear on it. Romans 6:23 tells us our sin earns us death. Let’s be clear here – this is sin as defined by God and not by our standards or our culture.
God, in His loving nature, provided a way for our wages to be paid through Jesus, His Son. Christ died on the cross, to pay our wages, to cover our penalty for our sin. The second half of Romans 6:23 tells us “the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” It is a gift, but we have to receive it.
How do we receive it this gift of eternal life?
We confess our sins
John 1:9 But if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness
We repent of our sins and turn to God (ask for forgiveness AND turn away from our sin)
Acts 2:28 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (NLT version)
Luke 13:3 “Not at all! And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God.”
Friend, if you are in a church that is silent on sin, I strongly encourage you to get out and find a church that preaches the whole word of God. Without preaching on sin, you can’t preach on repentance and without repentance, you can’t receive that gift of eternity with God. Find that church that cares not just about your life here on earth, but helps you get ready for your eternity.
If you are reading this and you have come to the knowledge that you have not received God’s gift, it isn’t too late. Confess your sin, ask for forgiveness, and turn from your sin.
