Win the conquest 2 Sam 5:6-15
- Don’t listen to the lies “The blind and lame will repel you”
- Read V 5:6-8
- Now that David is King, he is going to go and take Jerusalem. Its been in the hands of the Jebusites and now he’s taking it. This is DAVID! Mighty warrior- He’s not giving into them!
- Psalm 2:1-6 4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision.
- They mock him- You don’t have what it takes- we’re going to put our blind and lame on defense
- David and his men aren’t phased- They take the city. David goes so far as to say he hates them
- David hated them because they followed false Gods- they mock David who mocks them
- Psalm 115:3-8 READ
- Deut 4:28 And there you will serve gods, the work of men’s hands, wood and stone, which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.
- David isn’t having their mockery and false words spoken against him- He’s taking the city.
- He even gives a challenge- who ever can kill them- I’ll make them a captain! LETS GO
- Psalm 118:6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?
- Here’s what David knew- what someone says against you isn’t the determining factor of your success or failure- What God has said about you and your situation is what matters
- Jerusalem belongs to Israel- they are taking it- plain and simple.
- What does it mean to you?
- Who are you listening to as you’re moving towards victory? The unlawful inhabitants of you city that are saying lies and accusations against you that are idolaters? WHO?
- Isaiah 54:17 No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their righteousness is from Me,” Says the Lord.
- Promise upon promised declares that those are servants of the most high will be victorious
- Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
- Now- victory may not look like you think that it may look- but victory is assured in Christ Jesus
- But if you’re trying to live a life for Jesus- you’re going to have moments that you give yourself over to the lies and accusations of the Devil and his minions. You believe the lies- it breaks you
- Revelation 12:10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.
- 1 John 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
- You want to win? Don’t listen to the lies! Jeremiah 1:19 , Jer 20:11,
- Maintain a relationship with the Lord “and the Lord of hosts was with him”
- READ V-9-10 So David went on and became great, and the Lord God of hosts was with him.
- The key to David’s success, albeit through his determination- was that “the Lord of hosts was with him”. The spirit had departed from Saul, and David had seen it, and through this battle, it is clear that God is with him as he went through the battle.s
- Psa 71:16 I will go in the strength of the Lord God; I will make mention of Your righteousness, of Yours only.
- David didn’t act on his own. This was the problem with Saul- he acted on his own. Not David.
- David was a worshipper who loved God’s word- its clear from the psalms.
- I would assume that David worshipped his way through this battle as well.
- Joshua 1:5 No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.
- David knew scripture! He knew that God was a protector and a guide- a DEFENDER!
- What made david different in many instances is that when he experienced Victory- he didn’t distance himself from God- he drew closer to him- He called out to him and depended on him
- 9 Then David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it the City of David. And David built all around from [a]the Millo and inward.
- He had STRONG victory! Took over the stronghold and renamed the city! Built it up!
- ONLY WITH GOD COULD HE DO THIS.
- There’s not a lot written about the Jebusites, they don’t come up again- probably destroyed!
- What does it mean to you?
- Are you maintaining a relationship with God? It takes work. It doesn’t just happen.
- Simply- Prayer, Bible, Worship, Fellowship, Worship, being part of the church
- John 20:31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
- I’ve seen it over the years- have to have it all- church and no private or vice versa- no work
- Matthew 28:20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
- My friend Jesse as a kid- super close, fell away, moved away He thought I was dead,
- Human relationships are easy to slip away from, how much more the one with the father
- Not false piety “I read my bible every day” “ I pray every day” — but it doesn’t show!!
- You want to win? Maintain the relationship! Isa 41:10, 1 tim 4:17-18
- Remind yourself who did what “David knew the Lord had established him”
- READ V 11-12 So David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, and that He had exalted His kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
- This says so much right here- David knew that it was the Lord that had done the work. He may have gone into battle, kept his relationship up with YHWH, but in the end, he knew it was God
- Deuteronomy 4:9 Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren,
- At least 4 times God tells Israel to teach them to their Children so they wont forget
- This was a charge from Moses to the children of Israel- but it maintains through David and beyond- if you don’t pay attention- you’re going to forget everything that God has done.
- The psalmist- Psalm 106:21 They forgot God their Savior, Who had done great things in Egypt,
- This is the story of Israel and the story of us- Given enough time- we forget that it was the LORD
- David knew it though- DAVID-Psalm 103:2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits:
- He knew who did what and who Got him. Where. God chose him, rose him up, established him.
- What does it mean to you?
- Do you forget what God has done for you? Do you have temporary memory?
- People will forget their salvation, their healings, deliverances, etc
- They get it, and just slowly move away from the Lord- out on their own
- Isa 63:7 I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the Lord And the praises of the Lord, According to all that the Lord has bestowed on us, And the great goodness toward the house of Israel,Which He has bestowed on them according to His mercies, According to the multitude of His lovingkindnesses.
- This is why continual bible reading, worship, prayer, and church is important
- God has created us with insatiable appetites and limited remembrances
- But the repetitive nature of it reminds us. Why do we do birthdays, anniversaries, mothers, fathers day, etc? To remember. To think. Not forget
- Its like a kid who thinks they own something- they own nothing.
- Dueteronomy 32:18 Of the Rock who begot you, you are unmindful, And have forgotten the God who fathered you.
- You want to win? Don’t forget- REMEMBER! John 14:26, James 1:25, Jeremiah 2:32
Don’t use blessings as permission to sin “took more concubines”
- Concubines and multiple wives was never God’s plan and intention for his peope.
- 13 David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he had come from Hebron.
- This was sin. We’ll see as we go through David’s life how the concubines create problems.
- David should have just maintained one wife and lived as an honorable King, but he didn’t
- When you look through the OT, stories like Samson remind us that God moving doesn’t equal God’s approval and that men can move away from the blessings of God by walking in disobedience.
- What does it mean to you?
- If you want to win the conquest, don’t go back to sin after you’ve won
- David should have been concerned with Jerusalem more than getting with the woeman.
- But many people just maintain a dependence, relationship and remembrance until they get victory- then they go back to their old sins and way of living
- Until they get that job, get that spouse, get that healing, get those friends. Move back to sin
- You were never given victory so you can go back to sin- to live for yourself and your own plans
- Romans 6 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
- 1 Peter 2:16 as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God.
- Galatians 5:13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
- Jude 4 , James 4:17, Matthew 12:45 1 Corinthians 15:34 1 peter 4: 1-2,
