Jesus In Our Contrary Winds

  • Jesus in our contrary winds. Matthew 14:22-33
  • This is another one of the well know stories about Jesus in the Bible- when he walks on water- The disciples get into the boat- Jesus goes to pray- they find themselves, the Bible says “Tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary” Jesus comes out on the sea, walks on the water to them. The disciples see him, and think it’s a ghost, but Jesus reassures them. Tells them to not be afraid. Peter tests Jesus and says “if its you, let me come out on the water” peter gets out, sees the waves, get scared, starts to sink, calls out to Jesus and Jesus saves him.
  • This thing is sermons for days.
  • But I got caught up on the ‘for the wind was contrary’ what does that mean? Antagonistic, opposite- The wind is not going the direction that is it supposed to go.
  • We can all identify with contrary winds can’t we? Trying to get somewhere or do something and it seems like the wind is not going in our direction? It’s ‘contrary’ just not going our way
  • So when we find ourselves in these situations- the “contrary winds” of our lives- what does Jesus do?

1. He leads us in our contrary winds.

  • 22 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat
  • In the beginning of this story- we see that Jesus “made his disciples get into the boat” He knew what he was doing. He knew what the night would bring. He was leading them to a deeper trust
  • One of the biggest lies that we believe is that God didn’t see it coming.
  • He is sovereign. He is in control. He knows what is happening and how it happens.
  • So when the disciples are told to get in the boat- they don’t realize the lesson they are going to get that night- but Jesus does- because he is leading them.
  • Proverbs 16:9 A man’s heart plans his way,But the Lord directs his steps.
  • These disciples didn’t realize the full weight of the night- they just thought they were going ahead but Jesus had a plan- he was leading them. They were going to learn a lot about Jesus
  • Ps 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.
  • That’s what God does- he gently lead us towards his purposes and plans. We may or may not see what the end result will be- but his lead is always evident when the trial is over.
  • See- contrary winds seem like something that keeps us from doing what WE think we should be doing- I’m sure these guys didn’t like the wind- but Jesus KNEW these winds were coming and led them INTO the winds to teach them something about HIM>
  • This is the character of God throughout time- leading us into places to grow us.
  • Deuteronomy 8:2 READ
  • What does it mean to you
  • You should pray Deut 8:2 over your life and believe that wherever God needs to lead you to grow you you will embrace. You will trust that God knows what he is doing. For HIS benefit
  • Making decisions is hard- especially if you want to honor God- so you want to make decisions based on God’s revealed truths- Does this bring God glory, or me, will this grow the kingdom?
  • Here’s some promises that we know from scipture
  • John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Isaiah 30:21 Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left.
  • So if we know these truths we can trust that as our decisions line up with what the word of God says- we can trust that it is the Lord leading us and guiding us. (Military-folding, standing, demanding teaching for our benefit)
  • Proverbs 20:24 A man’s steps are of the Lord; How then can a man understand his own way?
  • Cause here’s the truth- its in the most contrary winds of our life that God leads us that we grow the most and learn to trust him even more.

2. He comes to us in our contrary winds

  • So he leads us into these places- into these contrary winds and it feels like we’re alone- but here comes Jesus 25  in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.
  • When we find ourselves in the midst of these challenges of life Jesus comes to us. Right where we’re at. He will literally walk on water to come to you and rescue you.
  • Allows us to go into predicaments that seem insurmountable just to show himself faithful.
  • These are concrete historical truths about our God that we must believe. God comes to us
  • Genesis 3:9 Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”
  • Adam wasn’t seeking after God- so God came seeking after Adam- That’s his nature.
  • Ezekiel 34:11 ‘For thus says the Lord God: “Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out.
  • He looks for us- he seeks after us- he longs to be with us- and will not leave us alone- he will come to us.
  • This is why David could say- Psalm 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
  • David went through some perilous times and every time God proved himself faithful and showed up.
  • What does it mean to you
  • You have to believe that when you are in the worst situations of your life that God will show up
  • You’re on a boat, in the middle of nowhere, waves crashing on your bow. Know you’re not abandoned. (getting stuck helping someone move with no help- dude showed up)
  • Luke 19:10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
  • Right now- I know there are some of you that are going through some turmoil. Maybe even of your own doing- hear the word of the Lord today- he will come to you. He will. I don’t know how and I don’t know when but he will- because its in his nature to seek us out.
  • 1 John 4:19 We love Him because He first loved us.
  • And that love means that he comes and seeks out those that are his. He doesn’t leave them.
  • John 14:18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
  • And yes- it may feel like there are times that you have been abandoned- but its not true- he will come. His word declares it and his history proves it.
  • Matthew 10:31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

3. He comforts us in our contrary winds.

  • 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”
  • Right in the middle of the storm, when things seemed the worst, here comes Jesus- right up to the boat, walking on water and comforts the disciples in their predicament
  • now let me pause for a minute here- we are reading an actual historical event that happened- this isn’t an allegory or a parable. Jesus literally walked on water to come to his disciples
  • what we’re doing here- is drawing an analogy to our own lives where we find ourselves in predicaments and situations that are not favorable and seeing what Jesus can do in our lives.
  • This is important because sometimes people will minimize what God is able to do in their own lives through his comfort (When Ps John had stroke The Lord comforted me)
  • His promise, throughout scripture is comfort. I always try to bring OT and NT together so you can see the immutable nature of our God that he is the same yesterday, today and forever
  • Isaiah 49:13 Sing, O heavens! Be joyful, O earth! And break out in singing, O mountains!
  • For the Lord has comforted His people, And will have mercy on His afflicted.
  • Psalm 119:50 This is my comfort in my comfort affliction, For Your word has given me life.
  • IN the OT God came to people through his spirit, his presence and his word
  • It brought comfort to them in the times of despair, discomfort and famines.
  • We see here- the words of Jesus- comforting his disciples and challenging them- “be of good cheer” as the remedy for their discomfort. Change your attitude in this situation.
  • What does it mean to you
  • Worldly comfort seems to be centered around magnifying the turmoil in our lives instead of changing our attitude about them like Jesus does to his disciples in this story
  • Covered in waves he says- “Be of Good cheer” change your attitude- it’ll all be OK.
  • So right now- and in the future- whatever situation you find yourself in- be of good cheer.
  • Be biblical about it- realize that the comfort of God includes a change in attitude in your life.
  • But FURTHERMORE the actual presence of  God will show up with HIS comfort
  • 2 Cor 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
  • THAT’S what the comfort of God IS and what it does- When we, as people of God have experienced the comfort of the HS we then, in turn can comfort other people who are in need of comfort. Our “Good cheer” can bring “good cheer” in the lives of those who need comfort
  • Here’s a truth- Psalm 34:18 The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.
  • We, as people of God- can be used by God to comfort those in who need comfort, while we ourselves can be comforted- How do we do that? 1. Be of good cheer 2. Give the ministry of our presence 3. Remind of Scripture 4. Help where we can.
  • Psalm 71:21 You shall increase my greatness ,And comfort me on every side.

4. He saves us in our contrary winds

  • 29 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
  • We see here in this part of the story that Jesus calls to peter- and peter gets out of the boat and begins to sink when he looks at his circumstances and Jesus saves him when he asks!
  • Notice- Jesus calls, Peter responds in faith, loses faith when he looks at his circumstances and Jesus saves him- even tho he had some doubts
  • Doubts are normal! If you’re walking on the sea with Jesus- watching the miracles happen I think it would be normal to start to doubt a little bit- to start to sink- you’re on the water!
  • And Jesus here- says to Peter- why did you doubt that I couldn’t do what I can do?
  • 2 sam 22:17-20 READ
  • That’s what God does because he DELIGHTS in us! He created us- he loves us!
  • Psalm 107:19 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses. (there have been many times when there has been min. trouble Jesus saved)
  • We serve a rescuing God- a God that shows up right on time to help us in our distress.
  • Have you read the psalms lately? They are FILLED with stories of rescue! Filled with stories of redemption and scriptures that will encourage you
  • Psalm 121:7 The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul.
  • Situations, persecutions, scary times, God delivers from them all.
  • Story after story in the OT about God’s deliverance and redemption
  • What does it mean to you
  • God will rescue you from contrary winds and situations in your life- he will
  • He will rescue you from physical situations, financial situation, relationship situations, all of it-
  • I’ve seen him do it for me and many other people many times- he will do it.
  • 2 Timothy 4:18 And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!
  • That’s a promise of Scripture- and I believe that those winds- sometimes honestly, they are our fault- but many times- we just find ourselves in predicaments that are not of our own doing- and we need the Lord to rescue us- Just like Peter on the water- and we have no where to go-
  • So we hold onto scripture-
  • 2 Thes 3:3 But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.
  • There are going to be times when it seems as if there is no escape- and nothing will go right-
  • BUT-Jude 24  Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless
  • Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,
  • So we trust- we believe- we focus on Jesus not on the waves of our lives- we remember and quote the scriptures over our situation know JESUS WILL SAVE US
  • 2 Timothy 1:12 For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.
  • See, when you’re persuaded- you understand and believe that God CAN and WILL deliver!
  • 2 Corinthians 1:10 who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us,
  • Why do you have any reason to believe that Jesus wont do for you what he did for others?
  • He will. He will save you.
