I AM DIRECTIONALLY CHALLENGED. Thank God for GPS, otherwise I would be completely lost. I just returned from New Jersey and the highway systems there is crazy. There was actually a few times we got turned around, even following our GPS. Typically, I can just plug in my address and follow the path that GPS lays out for me and I get safely to my destination. It’s wonderful! But like in Jersey, the path God has us on is not always clear cut.
I might have to go through some areas I never meant to go through and I might get turned around a couple of times on all those crazy turnpikes. But the turns I missed was always because I was not paying close attention to the GPS. I was distracted by talking or too secure because I thought I knew the way. Hello? I’m speaking to someone. Did you know God has GPS? It’s called the Holy Spirit and when you follow the Holy Spirit closely, giving all your attention to Him and shutting out the voices of the back seat drivers; you will always arrive safely.
“The steps of a righteous man are ordered by God: and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholds him with His hand.” Psalm 37
When you follow closely and give all your attention to the leading of the Holy Spirit and stay on the path He has for you, then God will lead you, guide you, direct you and keep you safe on His path. However, if you get haughty thinking you know the way and choose to get off the Lord’s path, start paving your own way, then you’ll end up somewhere you never wanted to go.
Now, maybe you just missed a turn and can reroute just up ahead; but often that wrong turn is a cold and dark place, away from all that is light and comfort, and in the end it bites. You will wind up wondering how in the world you got there and when/where/how did you go wrong. God never meant for you to go there. How do you stay on His path? How do you know your steps are ordered? The rest of the Psalm tells you:
TRUST in the LORD and do good;
DELIGHT yourself in the LORD;
COMMIT your ways into the LORD;
REST in the LORD;
CEASE from anger and forsake wrath;
DEPART from evil and do good;
WAIT on the LORD and keep His way and HE shall exalt you.
This Christian walk is no joke. Don’t wander. It’s not worth it. Don’t go your own way. Stay in Him and follow the path He has marked out for you and He will keep you firmly planted on His path. Wait on the Lord for clear direction. It’s ok to be in a holding pattern, He is working things out just up ahead. He is faithful to finish the work He started in you, “the Lord will perfect that which concerns me”.
