DISCERNMENT OR DISGRUNTLEMENT?
I meet a lot of people who claim to have the gift of “discernment”, but in reality it’s only confirmation bias. They proclaim to “discern” the Lord’s will, but it’s only because they have a bias about the situation and then begin to look at the situation through a confirmation lens. They will “see” things that correlate with their bias and come to the conclusion that they “discerned” correctly. But correlation does not equal causation. Discernment is never for you to bring condemnation upon another. Discernment is never about criticism or to evaluate and judge the motives and heart of another. Maybe you are disgruntled with what is going on? The enemy will use your disgruntlement to his advantage.
Is your “discernment” for vindication? This, too, is a lie and a tactic of the enemy. Just because there is a correlation, does not mean your discernment is right. Pay attention! “But solid food is for full-grown men, for those whose senses and mental faculties are trained by practice to discriminate and distinguish between what is morally good and noble and what is evil and contrary either to divine or human law.” Hebrews 5:14 Discernment has to do with that which is “anti law”: against God’s law, and only comes through strict training and discipline. The more you discipline your flesh in righteousness and holiness according to God’s law, the more discerning you will be. One who habitually obeys God’s laws and statutes, it is he who is the discerner.
