David Was Greatly Distressed

2 sam 30:6 Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

  1. Distress is going to come
  2. What led up to this calling out of David for God to strengthen him?
  3. He had been through the proverbial ringer- lets read 1 sam 30
  4. Amalakites had invaded, burned the city with fire, taken captive the women and others, then they were emotionally overwhelmed by the whole thing- “wept until they had no more power to weep”
  5. Lets recall a little about this guy David- this is the one who slayed the Goliath. He’s also the one who had won against the philistines, AND the Geshurites, the Girzites, and the Amalekites. Earlier- but NOW the Amalekites come BACK and wreck havoc on Ziklag and David- This doesn’t even include that Saul had been pursuing David this whole time
  6. What can we get from this quick synopsis- you can slay goliath, you can win battles, but even in the midst of it- There can still be constant attacks, and you don’t always win
  7. And when you don’t always win- you ‘weep until you have no power to weep”
  8. Does any of that resonate with your life? Sure- may not be physical attacks and wars- but life sure does have its challenges doesn’t it?
  9. Job 14:1 “Man who is born of woman Is of few days and full of trouble.
  10. That’s pretty much life isn’t it? You’re born, and then there’s trouble. Life is just work- and if you haven’t embraced it, you can get frustrated with the struggles of life.
  11. Trouble in school, growing up, parents, dating, jobs, cars, houses, politics, pandemics
  12. Its really enough to “weep until you have no power to weep” abuse, trauma, sickness
  13. And as a person that serves God- you wonder sometimes- whats the deal? Where’s that perfect life? Honestly- its enough to get some people to stop serving God-
  14. Ecc. My favorite book- so much wisdom- here’s a gem-
  15. Ecclesiastes 9:11 I returned and saw under the sun that— The race is not to the swift, Nor the battle to the strong, Nor bread to the wise, Nor riches to men of understanding, Nor favor to men of skill; But time and chance happen to them all.
  16. Swift people lose, strong lose, wise don’t prosper, those of us that have a brain don’t get the money, the skilled people don’t have an advantage- everyone else wins but ME
  17. The operative phrase- “time and chance happen to them all”
  18. There’s just an element of chance to some of this- stuff just happens. Cant control everything
  19. What does it mean to you-
  20. Embrace that your life isn’t perfect and never will be- especially if you’re a Christian
  21. 1 Peter 3:14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, 2 Corinthians 4:17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, Acts 5:41 rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name.Philippians 1:29 For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake,
  22. I’m not saying to live with an expectation of destruction and despair in your life but I think that part of what sets people off is an expectation of a perfect life with no issues- life is issues!
  23.  1 Peter 4:12 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you;
  24. Embrace the reality of an imperfect life- David’s life wasn’t perfect, neither will yours be
  25. My life hasn’t been perfect and still isn’t without its challenges- its just the way it is.
  • Strengthened himself
  • So David is distressed, he’s overwhelmed, he’s had everything that he ever loved taken from him- wives, kids, land, influence, strength.
  • There’s really no where for him to turn at this point- probably a great time to give up
  • I say if you don’t ever think about giving up you’re not really in the fight
  • But here’s part of the equation- sometimes- on this side of heaven- you need to wake up to the reality that there’s no earthly person or solution coming to save you
  • Yes- God sends angels, people and provision sometimes. He does- but sometimes- you find yourself at the bottom, alone, with no one helping you and you can only reach out to the Lord- you have to strengthen yourself. You have to encourage yourself.
  • There’s a bit of action that needs to be taken by each of us to not be passive
  • But how? How do we actually pragmatically do that? How do we ‘Strengthen ourselves”
  • MacLearen- There is no mystery about the road to the sweetness and holiness and power that may belong to a Christian. The only way to win them is to be occupied, far more than most of us are, with the plain truths of God’s revelation in Jesus Christ.
  • If you are not controlling your thoughts and eyes- towards the revealed truths that you know to be true- you are always going to struggle to find strength in the lord- that’s on you- you have to be engaged in the battle to encourage yourself- you MUST FOCUS
  • ONEHebrews 12:3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.
  • Think about Jesus- think about what he went though in light of your life-
  • And people say- ‘you’re minimizing my feelings’ yes- yes I am- because that’s what the Bible tells us to do- look at Jesus and your problems don’t seem that big-
  • TWO- Psalm 2:8 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession.
  • Immediately start talking to God about your need for strength! He will show up!
  • He will Show up to strengthen you if you stay focused on HIM and his PROMISES
  • The Apostle Paul knew pain- People hurt him, abandoned him, didn’t support him
  • 2 Timothy 4:17 But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. Also I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
  • THREE- Be BRAVE
  • 1 Corinthians 16:13 Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.
  • There is an epidemic of weakness in people and its contagious
  • For some reason- having the worst stories, the worst life, the most problems seems to be a badge of honor- and people quit far to easy- Marriages, jobs, health, money
  • They just quit- some translations of 1 cor 16:13 say “act like men”
  • Because I will tell you- you have to be somewhat brave to not just give up.
  • Do you know the most heroic thing I’ve seen? A parent with a job that doesn’t give up for Years
  • Heb12:12– Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees,
  • That’s you doing it- strengthen your hands- step it up- get in the fight-
  • 2 Chronicles 15:7 But you, be strong and do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded!”
  • Keep your hands to the plow control the controllables- let God do the rest-
  • Haggai 2:4 Yet now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ says the Lord; ‘and be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land,’ says the Lord, ‘and work; for I am with you,’ says the Lord of hosts.
  • Because here’s the big part
  • Its only possible “In the Lord”
  • Its only in the Lord that you can be strengthened
  • You aren’t strong enough to do it on your own- you’re just not. You don’t have what it takes- you aren’t smart enough, skilled enough, powerful enough to do it
  • I think that was part of the problem of David- he knew his limitations- he was probably overwhelmed because he was probably empty from all his fighting and couldn’t muster enough gumption to go back into the battle with amalakites- he strengthen himself, in the LORD- what did David do? We know exactly- he wrote it down
  • Psalm 138:3 In the day when I cried out, You answered me, And made me bold with strength in my soul.
  • He called out to God and he was strengthened in THE LORD
  • The Bible never describes self sufficiency as the means of power- this isn’t war that the spoils go the strongest warriors, but to the weakest ones who call out for help
  • It says in  Ephs 6:10 my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might
  • Not be strong in yourself- your own plans- your own ideas- your own strength
  • Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
  • Only THROUGH CHRIST can we overcome- can we get through the despairs the problems and the pains of this life-
  • And if you know what I’m talking about then you know- we need HIM and if you’re OF him and IN him and REST on Him- He is IN YOU and WITH YOU and AROUND you
  • If you’re a saved Holy Ghost filled child of God- he WALKS with you through the FIRE
  • Ephesians 1:19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power
  • So those who don’t believe don’t walk in that power they don’t experience that power because they refuse to believe and put their trust in the God that SAVES
  • Isaiah 40:28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord,
  • The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.
  • That’s the God I walk with! That’s the God I serve! That’s my savior!
  • See- being strengthened in the Lord is other-worldly its not what most people would expect or understand- it’s looking at a circumstance and knowing that God is going to show up. Its going through something and knowing that you’re not alone
  • Its staying the course, going without, sacrificing, giving, serving, loving, with no immediate outcomes KNOWING That the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is there!
  • Ephesians 3:16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,
  • It was “His God”
  • What David grasped- and You have to grasp that he is your God. He is more than just “God”
  • It says “But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.”  “His GOD”
  • David claimed in his heart, his belief that Yahweh- Jehovah was much more than the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He was of the belief that God, the creator was HIS GOD- God is the God of David
  • And when all these marauders took everything from him. His land, his family, his prestige, his power, they took his strength and his will to fight- but they couldn’t take it all.
  • They couldn’t take away ‘his God’ because David knew that God was HIS God.
  • Yahweh was known as “The God of Israel” but that general sense of God wasn’t enough power to draw on in his deepest time of need. He took hold of the intimate individual connection promised to all of Creation “I will be YOUR God”
  • This promise of God is a promise that others took hold of in Scripture- and had amazing lives
  • Exodus 32:11 Then Moses pleaded with the Lord his God,
  • What kind of miracles did Moses see? What kind of life did he live with HIS God?
  • Jonah 2:1 then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly.
  • Jonah rescued from the belly of the fish- crying out to HIS God
  • This was a promise to Israel and to Messiah himself that he would be HIS GOD
  • Micah 5:4 And He shall stand and feed His flock In the strength of the Lord, In the majesty of the name of the Lord His God; And they shall abide, For now He shall be great To the ends of the earth;
  • What does it mean to you?
  • Have you internalized and believed in your greatest times of need that God is YOUR God
  • He’s not just a apparition in the sky- you are not just a grain of Sand NO he is YOUR God
  • Psa 146:5 Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, Whose hope is in the Lord his God,
  • I don’t have the time to go into it- but way back in Gensis 15 theres a story of Abram when God changed his named to Abraham- It was the mix of Abram and Yahweh
  • But remember- it was after that that God changed HIS name- He was now “The God of Abraham” and that’s an encouragement to ALL of us that he is OUR God as well
  • Not just collectively- PERSONALLY.
  • I am your pastor, but I am also YOUR pastor- individually-
  • Jeremiah 17:7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord.
  • Therefore- Lets encourage ourselves in the Lord this year- let this be our best year yet
  • Things are going to happen-life is going to be what it is
  • But lets stay encouraged in the LORD by remembering he is MY GOD
  • He is our sustaining power- in those weak moments, encourage YOURSELF in the LORD
  • Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
