Emotions

Emotions

Lord over your emotions?

“I don’t feel like it.” Ever heard those words? Typically it’s from a kid when you’re trying to get them to do something. Yet, I hear it a lot (probably way too much) among Christians who are led by their feelings. “Feelings. Nothing more than feelings.” Who remembers that old song? It’s become the great excuse for so many evil things. The reason for divorce, “I didn’t feel in love anymore”. The reason for skipping out on the things of God, “I didn’t feel like getting up and praying/ reading my Bible/ going to church.” Or “I don’t feel like forgiving”. Our feelings and our fleshly heart are deceptive, “the heart is desperately wicked” therefore cannot be trusted. What can be trusted then?

Jesus can be trusted. His Word can be trusted. The Holy Spirit can be trusted. But see, many people who follow their feelings don’t actually know what God’s Word says, or really who Jesus is- they’ve knitted Him together with all their feelings about who God is and should be. We don’t trust in God based on how we feel- we trust Him because we have faith and hope that He will do what He said He would do.

“Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭23‬-‭25‬ ‭

I’m going to tell you something you may not like to hear. If Jesus is not Lord over your feelings and emotions than He is not Lord over your life. Being led by your feelings is a sure sign you are not being led by the Holy Spirit, but you lead yourself. You are your own idol. Your emotions are your own god. I know it’s cliché to say, but if Jesus is not Lord over all, then He is not Lord at all. Do not deceive yourself.

Emotionalism is rampant in society and among God’s people. I’m going to tell you something else you will not like to hear: doing what you want, when you want and how you want is a sign of a lukewarm, emotional Christian. You think your OK because you will obey some Scripture, but not all. Again, He is Lord of all or not at all. You are in danger of being vomited out if you do not repent and change your ways. You won’t even receive a rebuke because you think it’s not “loving”. You say things like, “God would never do that”. By your feelings, you deceive yourself and are blind.

“So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked— I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.” ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬-‭19‬

Our faith is not in things seen or that which we want Him to do, rather is in an almighty and awesome God who watches over His Word to perform it. Faith is solely in the person of Jesus Christ and His death and resurrection. Faith is in God’s holy promises found in His Word.

You cannot disconnect the Lord from His Word. This is nonsense. He is a good God that says what He means and means what He says. He is a wonderful and good God who gives good gifts and chastens and rebukes His own. His Word is connected to His nature and character. He will never fail nor forsake you in your weakness. He is not concerned with how strong you are or your own ability to do something, but only that you trust in Him.

“He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man. The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy.” ‭‭Ps 147‬:‭10‬-‭11‬

What a GREAT AND MIGHTY GOD we serve! Take your hands off your life and disconnect your deceptive feelings. Father, forgive us our iniquities of being led by our emotions. We repent for seeking our own way and doing our own thing. We understand our feelings are deceptive and so we cast those things aside that appear so real to us, but are deceptive according to Your Word and we TRUST IN YOU to bring the victory, in Jesus name!
