“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.”
Ecclesiastes 3:11 NKJV
I love this verse from Ecclesiastes: “He has put eternity in their hearts”. We were created to serve, worship, and glorify God. That’s the entire purpose of our existence, to walk in fellowship with the Lord and give Him glory in all that we do. We’re unable to comprehend eternity, because we’re subject to the laws of time, but that desire for more is in each of us, even if we don’t understand it yet. Even so, He has given us a longing for things eternal, for Him, that can’t be satisfied anywhere else.
We are finite beings, yet we were not created to be finite: “but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Gen. 2:17). Before sin entered the world through the disobedience of Adam and Eve, we were eternal, and though our bodies perish our souls do not. There exists a longing in every heart for something more than this world can give, something greater than the world can offer.
So many spend their lives in pursuit of something to fill that void, only to come to the end of it all and realize it doesn’t satisfy, that it wasn’t enough. Even in our day to day, if you find yourself anxious and empty, you can stop and realize it’s because you haven’t allowed Him to be enough, you’ve placed other things before Him and those things will never satisfy like He does. There’s no alternative to Him, there’s no replacement or substitute, and try as we may, we will never be satisfied until we rest in Him.
“For He satisfies the longing soul, And fills the hungry soul with goodness.”
