NOTHING STINKS LIKE FALSE humility. Oswald Chambers was right to call conscious humility “the most satanic type of pride.” False humility invites attention to itself; true humility is unconscious. Great men never think they are great, and small men never think they are small.
A truly humble person is more jealous for God’s honor than his own, “Preach the gospel, die, and be forgotten”. False humility feigns submission, but does not obey, “But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I test the LORD!”” Isaiah 7:12 The prophet came to King Ahaz and told him to “ask a sign from the Lord”. Ahaz feigned meekness but was puffed up with conceit.
Ahaz had already made up his mind to go to the Assyrian army for help, so he assumed an appearance of piety. “Secret disaffection to God is often disguised with the colour of respect to him.” (Matthew Henry) Have you ever had accusations thrown at you from one who states, “I am operating in love and genuine grace!” But with their passive-aggressive speech they condemn your actions? If you are truly operating in grace, you have no need to tell everyone you operate in grace.
False humility invites attention. Today’s social media is the worst. Why do you feel the need to tell everyone your self-righteous plans? Why do you profess piety but in your heart is self-exaltation? If you are truly a humble servant, there’s no need to announce it; just walk it out.
If you only desire to honor God, why do you care what others think? Unless you just want attention. “But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking (attention seekers) and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek;” Romans 2:5-9
If you only desire to honor God, then what is with the arrows you are shooting at the righteous? Do you know the arrows you shoot at others will be brought back on you heavier and hotter? “Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls.” Romans 14:4a False humility seeks attention, even at the expense of another.
Examine your heart. If it’s attention you seek, it’s best to seek it from One, the only wise King. Seek the honor of His presence, seek His face forevermore. Friend, you have a field given to you from the Lord, mind your crops. Use the gifts, talents and calling God has placed upon you in true meekness and humility. If social media is causing you to stumble, then step away. It is imperative that you stop worrying so much what others think about you and care more about honoring the Lord. “Stop regarding man in whose nostrils is breath, for of what account is he?” Isaiah 2:22#runyourrace
