Four D’s of Blood 2 sam12-32 READ-
The Blood of Defiance (Defiance starts in the heart- it’s the desire of the individual)
- Abner’s disobedience cost others their lives 31 But the servants of David had struck down, of Benjamin and Abner’s men, three hundred and sixty men who died.
- This never would have happened- but the collateral damage of Abner was that his defiance caused other people’s problems in their lives. His rebellion produces bloody death
- People died because of Abner- the 12 and the 360- because he took over God’s plan
- He wanted Ishbosheth to be king instead of David- and in the end- hundreds of people died
- Pro 17:11 Evildoers foster rebellion against God; the messenger of death will be sent against them.
- The Bible is clear- you reap what you sow- blood on the hands of abner because of his defiance
- You would think after 12 died that Abner and ishbosheth would have relented and repented- n
- This spirit of rebellion and defiance of Saul carried on into his son and leader- abner
- 1 Sam15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you from being king.”
- It has seeds of rebellion at its foundation and core- it can never be blessed
- God never blesses rebellion- A rebellious child can never receive the blessing of their parents
- The story of the Prodigal is not that his father blessed his rebellion- it was that the rebellious son came to himself and begged for mercy- there could be no blessing any other way.
- What does it mean to you?
- Where’s the rebellion in your life?
- The problem with rebellion is that its easy to see in others and hard to see in ourselves
- If I asked you to think of someone you know who is rebellious- you could think of one
- But what area of rebellion is in your heart? Not in your actions. Your heart-thoughts-desires
- The seeds of the mind get planted in the heart and produce crops of bloody rebellion
- Psalm 68:6 God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.
- It’s a bad place- we don’t want to live there- we get nothing good there-
- College- library to bathrooms promoted to stairways- sportscenter- Another guy did it, so I followed suit- and the main guy watching us didn’t even care- once over- REBELLION
- Deuteronomy 9:7 “Remember! Do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that you departed from the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord.
- That’s brooms- How much more when our heart is rebellious towards the Lord?
- The OT is full of stories of rebellion and the fruit of it- we should destroy it in our lives!
The blood of Division (Division is the fruit of defiance- rebellion breeds division with others)
- Abner and joab are watching these 12 by 12 go at it- 16 And each one grasped his opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his opponent’s side; so they fell down together. BLOODSHED
- Ishbosheth was never intended to be king- Saul in 1 sam lost the right to kingship and upon his death- Abner took it upon himself to make Ishbosheth (Sauls son) king-
- 2 sam 2:8 READ
- The men of Judah made David King because they knew he was the rightful king- but the line of Saul (Israel) was not seeing it that way
- Saul was told he would not be king- 1 Samuel 13:14 READ
- 2 sam 2:4 Then the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, “The men of Jabesh Gilead were the ones who buried Saul.”
- It caused a riff in the Nation of Israel- some followed Israel and some followed David in the Kingdom of Judah as the rightful king- It causes a 7 year civil war with ishbosheth that will end with his assisination Isreal will actually split again, but it will be after King solomon
- Its division. Its self seeking. Its going against God’s plan. God places kings and David was rightful. Abner wanted the house of Saul to continue and makes Ishbosheth king on his own
- And now in this battle- we see the fruits of his division- death. Blood. Destruction.
- You reap what you sow. The blood of these men are at the ends of Ish and Abner
- Division only produces bloodshed and destruction. Self seeking has been around for long time
- What does it mean to you?
- What seeds of division are you allowing in your life? What selfish motives are you working towards to get what you want in your life at the expense of others? Rebellion produces division- brings OTHERS
- 1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
- This spirit of division was in the OT the NT and even into today- and the root is always the same- self. Power. Alliances. It ruins relationships.
- Who knows who Adolf and Rudolf Dassler are? Herzogenaurach? It’s in Germany. It was the birthplace of Sportfarbrik Gebrüder Dassler a shoe company in 1927 it had 12 employees
- These brothers got in a dispute- stopped working with each other and 70 years later the town is still split over these two brothers. Different bakeries, pubs, butchers- no intermarriage- SHOES
- “If someone comes in through the door, your gaze still wanders to their shoes,” said Mayor German Hacker. That was an old habit in his generation. Herzogenaurach is also referred to as “the town of the lowered gaze”. The company? Adidas and Puma! Together bigger than nike?
- 1 Corinthians 12:25 that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.
- Division starts with you- find a way for unity- Kingdoms and shoes have divided over it.
- Jesus desires unity for his people- not division- destroy rebellion destroy division
The Blood of Devotion (Devotion is the intent of the heart-opposite of defiance)
- Some blood is destructive- but some is life- 24 Joab and Abishai also pursued Abner. And the sun was going down when they came to the hill of Ammah, which is before Giah by the road to the Wilderness of Gibeon.
- remember abashai? with David who wanted to Kill Saul? Abishai was the cousin of David- Here he is AGAIN- he wont give up on David and his reign! He goes out with Joab to Pursue Abner
- He wouldn’t give up on David. In for a penny in for a pound. He was DEVOTED
- Pay no mind to the thought of whether he should or shouldn’t be pursuing to kill- that’s another story- but the admirable part is that he was COMMITTED TO THE CAUSE
- Numbers 30:2 When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said.
- Somewhere Abashai made a commitment to God and David and meant to see it through!
- There’s something special about people that keep vows- its admirable
- Psalm 116:14 I will pay my vows to the Lord Now in the presence of all His people.
- Russians- doing the tile job- Didn’t want to leave it undone- Spoke poorly of them
- What does it mean to you? (what is in your heart- what are you desires)
- Do you wane in your commitments? Or do you see them through long after you made the decision to do them?
- If you have devotion to God- you will find that your commitments stick
- Commitment is costly- in marriage, jobs, life, church. Giving up is easy.
- Abishai could have went back to his old ways- David already shut him down- but NO
- Luke 9:62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
- We must be people of our commitments- big or small to the Glory of GOD
- Jesus kept his word- we should be people of our word
- Proverbs 20:25 It is a snare for a man to devote rashly something as holy, And afterward to reconsider his vow
The Blood of Determination (The act of the will- the thoughts of the mind)
- Asahel wouldn’t give up 21 And Abner said to him, “Turn aside to your right hand or to your left, and lay hold on one of the young men and take his armor for yourself.” But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.
- It cost Asahel his life, but you have to admire his courage to pursue Abner and make it right
- These guys wanted David to be king- Asahel wanted one kingdom- no division
- Proverbs 12:24 The hand of the diligent will rule, But the lazy man will be put to forced labor.
- When you are determined to see something through to the end- you must be determined
- Most things in your life will not come easy to you- it will take a measure of determination to make them happen- it probably wont cost you your life, but it will take some gumption to do it
- 1 Samuel 20:33 Then Saul cast a spear at him to [a]kill him, by which Jonathan knew that it was determined by his father to kill David.
- The same determination Saul had to kill David Asahel had to kill Abner- would not give up.
- Defiance or devotion- Division or determination- Your choice- Determine no division
- What does it mean to you? (what is in your mind- what do you think)
- Do you give up easy? Do you always take the easy route? Have you set your course?
- Jesus was the model for us- for the joy set before him- he endured the cross- showing us what determination looked like- He never gave up- we should never give up
- Its HARD living this life- but it doesn’t have to be- With God- all things are possible-
- YOU determine the path your life will take- what you will ingest and take part in. YOU
- The Jesus road is the better road- with the power of the Holy Spirit on your side
- Philippians 3:12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.
- Gal 6:9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
- The most important blood of them all- is the redemption of the Blood of Jesus
- Ephesians 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace
