FREEDOM!!
Gollum- Romans 7:14-20
PRECONVERSION PERIOD under the law.
Gollum’s life was tied to the ring. As long as the ring (sin) survived, he was in bondage to it.
2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (emancipation from bondage, freedom).
- Freedom that comes through Christ s first and foremost freedom from the condemnation and the slavery of sin.

SIN IS BONDAGE!!
When we were without Christ in this world, we were slaves to sin, impurity and Satan.
We lived according to the cravings of the sinful nature and the ways of Satan.
When Christ came in, by the power of the indwelling Spirit, we were set free from the power of sin!
Definition of sin:
there are many different words that the Bible uses for sin, wrongdoing, sin against God, wickedness, injustice, lawlessness, unbelief, unfaithfulness. The essence of sin is selfishness, it is rooted in human desire; a grasping of things or pleasures for ourselves, regardless of the welfare of others and the commands of God, which leads to cruelty to others and to rebellion against God and His law. Ultimately, sin becomes the refusal to be subject to God and His Word. It is enmity against God and disobedience to Him.
Sin is a moral corruption in humans that opposes all better human intentions.
It causes us to both to commit unrighteousness with delight and to take pleasure in the evil actions of others. It enslaves and corrupts.
Romans 6 READ
Paul challenges the erroneous idea that believers have to live in sin any longer.
In Chapter 6, Paul answers this Antinomian distortion of the gospel, also known in Revelation as thedoctrine of the Nicolaitans, present day gnostics (from the church in Thyatira)
The true believers are identified as being in Christ by virtue of being baptized into Christ and into his death so that our old life of sin is buried.
We have been translated from sin’s realm into another realm, the realm of life in Christ! He triumphed over sin’s power in His resurrection.
Paul tells us that IF we have died to sin and have made a definitive separation from our past life of sin, we will not continue to live in sin. vs 11

YOU HAVE DIED TO SIN! YOU NEED TO RECKON THIS FACT AS TRUE!!
- You died to sin in God’s sight. You are considered to have died with Christ on the cross and to have been raised by His resurrection.
- You died to sin when you were born again by the Spirit.
- You have been given Christ’s POWER TO RESIST SIN- to die to it daily by putting to death the misdeeds of the body, and to live a new life of obedience unto God.
- You died to sin in your water baptism as you proclaimed your death to sin and committed yourself to reject sin and to live for Christ.
Paul emphasizes that individuals cannot be slaves to sin and slaves to Christ at the same time. vs 16
No man can serve two masters.
The result of offering ourselves to sin is bondage and death.
John 8:36
So if the Son liberates you [makes you free men], then you are really and unquestionably free.
Now, when we face the temptation to sin, we have the POWER to ACT ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF GOD. Walk in the Spirit and you will not fulfill the works of the flesh.
- Freedom from the whole dominion of Satan
Satan is the ruler of the world, and all those without Christ are under his control and enslaved to his power.
Acts 26:18 To open their eyes that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may thus receive forgiveness and release from their sins and a place and portion among those who are consecrated and purified by faith in Me.
1 John 3:8 [But] he who commits sin [who practices evildoing] is of the devil [takes his character from the evil one], for the devil has sinned (violated the divine law) from the beginning. The reason the Son of God was made manifest (visible) was to undo (destroy, loosen, and dissolve) the works the devil [has done].
John 10:10 The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it [a]overflows).
Satan’s mission is to steal, kill and destroy our lives, health, families and everything that is good.
Jesus came to counter and destroy Satan’s sinister network of evil, by the power of the cross giving FULL life and more abundance.
Mark 3:27 But no one can go into a strong man’s house and ransack his household goods right and left and seize them as plunder unless he first binds the strong man; then indeed he may [thoroughly] plunder his house(setting free those who are enslaved to Satan)
Mark’s gospel is Jesus’ overriding concern to defeat Satan and his demonic powers. This power over Satan is especially evident in Jesus’ driving out of demons.
- Freedom to do spiritual warfare.
Jesus promised His followers authority over the power of Satan!
By knowing Jesus and the power of His resurrection we can confront and break the power that demons exert over us and others!
We are called to wage intense warfare through the power of the Holy Spirit.
In this way, we can set others FREE from the powers of darkness.
Spiritual warfare includes:
- Challenge Demons directly by knowing and using the authority of Jesus’ name. Paul I know, Jesus I know
- Use God’s Word. BELIEVE ALL OF GOD’S WORD, Genesis to Revelation. Ex: recipe tsp of salt
- Confess the power of the cross and the supremacy of is blood
- Pray in the Spirit
- Fast- “this kind only comes out by fasting”
- Drive out demons and their strongholds! They have NO AUTHORITY OVER THE CHILD OF GOD.
- Freedom in Christ is NOT a freedom for believers to do what we want, but to do what we should.
Spiritual freedom is never to be used for a cover up for evil or as a justification for conflict.
Our freedom is not to be used as an occasion to cause our brother to stumble!!
Romans 14:13-21; 15:1-3
Disregarding the convictions of others in order to please ourselves destroys God’s work.
Living sacrificially so as to help others will strengthen the kingdom of God.
1 Corinthians 8:9-13
Those who by their example lead another believer into sin and spiritual ruin sin not only against that person, but also against Christ Himself. A great sin has been committed; the purpose for which Christ died is considered of little value in comparison to one’s own selfish desires.
Alcohol and tatoos- FREE to do what you want……..pastor giving out tatoos during service, another pastor having a “tailgate” party
- Freedom from Satan equals slaves to Christ.
1 Corinthians 7:22 For he who as a slave was summoned in [to union with] the Lord is a freedman of the Lord, just so he who was free when he was called is a bond servant of Christ (the Messiah).
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Do you not know that your body is the temple (the very sanctuary) of the Holy Spirit Who lives within you, Whom you have received [as a Gift] from God? You are not your own, You were bought with a price [purchased with a preciousness and paid for, made His own]. So then, honor God and bring glory to Him in your body.
