Family Of God

  • The Family of God Matthew 12:46-50 READ
  • Psalm 68:6 says that God sets the solitary in families, and that’s true- I love that I am in the Family of God. I have bro an sis all over the world that I love with a deep abiding love.
  • Most people would say that we should love our families and the Biblical truth is that we should
  • 1 Timothy 5:8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
  • The Bible is clear we should take care of our families. The Bible is clear we are to take care of our children and that we should honor our parents. Our birth families deserve honor.
  • Exodus 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
  • But Jesus also makes it clear here (and in other places) that the will of God trumps the will of the family. That our highest devotion, commitment and love should be for God alone.
  •  Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.
  • This is a hard message in a world that idolizes and worships family as the center of everything.
  • Family becomes identity, a thing to worship, and where it becomes a problem is when it gets between you and your relationship with God.
  • I love my family. Love my wife and kids.  But I’m not going to let my relationship with them get in the way of my relationship with God and doing his will. No way. Not doing that.
  • Lets talk a bit about the family of God, priorities and doing the will of God.
  1. The family of God
  • Family was instituted by God. There are actually 4 governments instituted by God, Civil, Ecclesiastical, individual and Family government. There is government established within Families ordained by God. Man and Woman married, procreating, raising kids to know Jesus
  • This family unit was established by God in Genesis and perpetuates throughout the Bible.
  • All throughout the Bible- the lineages of families are part of the process for Global salvation.
  • The Bible, in many places uses the descriptors of a family unit as the descriptor of the family of God- that means that God values family, that he desires families to show his glory
  • These people whom you gather with to worship with and spend time with are not merely your fellow attenders at this church. We’re a household of God- he is the Father we are his kids- (this is why I reject that we are all God’s children) – we weep, show joy, live together, live life
  • Galatians 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are the household of faith (my closest friends are Christian- they share the same love)
  • I attended a gym with people. I worked with people. I live on a street with people.
  • But the family of God is much different- the church is much different. The Bible says that we are the Body of Christ- that Ephesians 4:16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
  • Which simultaneously gives credence to the value of earthly family to be used as an example of the family of God while also elevating the family of God.
  • It says we’re the children of God 1 John 3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!
  • John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name.
  • It says we’re adoptedEphesians 1:5 Having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of His will
  • 1 timothy uses these examples of how a church family should operate
  • 1 Tim 5:1 Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity
  • And 1 Peter 3:8 Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;
  • 1 Peter 2:17 Love the brotherhood. 1 Peter 1:22 sincere love of the brethren,
  • This life we live as the people of God is a picture of a family with all the issues with it.
  • Christ and his bride, Father God, Children, brotherhood, household, adopted
  • We give and receive Love- we help, support and stay committed to each other
  • And Just like a normal family- the ones that aren’t committed to the family don’t get the benefits of the family- it just doesn’t work- no families work that way-
  • I’ve got blood relatives all over the nation- don’t even know some- I don’t have access because there is no relationship. (church once a quarter then ‘why wont they help me’ don’t know you)
  • The understanding of family as descriptor of a Church helps you understand its function
  • A church is a family of families- “he places the fatherless” The scripture says
  • But just like a worldly relationship- you have to be committed to experience the benefits
  • Church family is the family that choose- and honestly- when people leave- it hurts. I love the family of God- It satisfies a deep spiritual need I have for family- and I do take it personally because I actually love people in the same way I care about my family. This isn’t transactional. I’m committed to this (This week someone weeping over leavers- me too)
  1. In a family- Priorities are paramount
  • 47 Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.”
  • This is the crux of what is going on in this scripture- Jesus is there with his disciples and someone mentions to him that there are members of his immediate family wanting to talk to him- and Jesus basically says “they can wait- I’m talking with my family”
  • The priority, to Jesus and by inference to us- is that the family of God and the will of God take precedence over our biological family. Its about the priority
  • Now- at the beginning we said- we must love and care for our families-
  • But what is our priorities when it comes to our families?
  • Sometimes you have to tell your family no to make God a priority- let them know what matters
  • All through Faith’s sports career- we didn’t let her miss Sundays- play after- that’s ok- We didn’t pay for special coaching- road teams etc. She still got a scholarship- and in the end- she chose to go to a small bible school instead of playing basketball- I couldn’t be prouder.
  • Take Church- There’s a 168 hours in the week and I’ve heard many a person say throughout my life- Sunday is a family day- eating pancakes is just as holy- taking care of family today
  • All great- just not biblical- 168 hours. 12 x5 work. 7 x8 sleep leaves 52 hours a week for you. Including commute, can God get 2.5-3 hours a week? 6? 8?
  • But its more than that- whats the priority- making your kids happy? Your spouse? Or God.
  • I’ll tell you what people make a priority- TV and Social media. Work. Hobbies. Etc.
    • Priorities are found in-
    • what we desire- what we look at Psalm 119:36-37 Incline my heart to Your testimonies, And not to  covetousness. 37 Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way. Is that what you desire? Or are you overcome with what others have and you don’t?
    • What we love- 1 Jn 2:15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.- what brings you joy? The worlds stuff? Covid restric.
    • What we set our heart on 1 Chronicles 22:19 Now set your heart and your soul to seek the Lord your God. – Is your heart set on worship and service of God? Have you settled it in you?
    • Who we serve- Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.- God wants to be first. Before spouse, Job, hobbies, self,
    • What we set our minds on Colossians 3:2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.- when you’re going through the day- what does your mind think about? Reflect on?
    • What we are conformed to Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
    • I don’t want to be like this world- I don’t care if they don’t like me- they never have
    • What you count as rubbish Philippians 3:8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ
    • All things is pretty consuming- And I get it- I have stuff- I do stuff- but its not what I desire. Its not the focus of my life- its not what drives me- I want to honor God with my life.
    • What we worship Exodus 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.
    • Worship is what you adore more than anything- your time, money, self, hobbies, influence, laziness, work, etc. your worship shows your priorities.
    • And so what are your priorities? Are you looking back to your family responsibilities instead of those who do the will of the father?
    • This is clear bible teaching- Jesus bumped his family for those he knew were going to move forward the kingdom because he knew that the promulgation of the kingdom is the most important thing
    • Moving the kingdom forward is the only thing that you’re going to take with you- its all that matters- any other investment- isn’t going to outlast heaven- its just not.
    • 47 says are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.”
    • Let em stand- its not my priority- its not what I’m focused on- I’m focused on Kingdom bizness

So what do we do?

  1. Do the will of the father
  • 49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”
  • I want to be the brother of Jesus- I want to be in that group- but there’s a price to being in that group “Whoever does the will of my father in heaven”
  • Those who reject Christ and refuse to do his will- those are his family
  • Think about this- Jesus rejected his family- and really says- that if my family doesn’t do the will of the father- they aint my family- they aren’t in the circle-
  • So- we should want to do the will of the father- we should want to be in that!
  • So what’s the will of the father? I had a conversation the other day about career with someone- and for most people- a job is just a shovel- a means to get what you need
  • Here’s a great verse that encapsulates all of it- 2 Corinthians 5:9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him.
  • That’s a great litmus test- “is this pleasing to God?” if its pleasing to God- lines up with his word- then its good. And the will of God is the most important of all of it.
  • Its like this- in my marriage- I don’t do things that I know don’t please my spouse- I do them.
  • But whats his will?
  • That we repent- that we turn to him in faith away from our sin- Acts 17: 30 Truly these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent.
  • That we love one another. 2 John 5-6 READ
  • That we don’t live for the lusts of the flesh 1 Peter 4:2 that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.
  • That we do good. 1 Peter 2:15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men—
  • That we give thanks 1 Thes 5:8 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
  • That we trust and lean Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall [a]direct your paths.
  • That we abstain from sexual immorality 1 Thes 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality;
  • That we seek first the kingdom Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
  • Do you notice that none of that includes where you live, who you marry, where you work, what your hobbies are?
  • Because its PRINCIPLES that drive the will of God- not the specifics- people want specifics- instead of generalities because they think it will be easier to just KNOW- PLEASE HIM
  • When principles guide- you can come up to something and know what to do
  • In the military- we talked about “in a military manner” which Is really not clearly defined- but you pick it up- Military manner is safe, quick, efficient, straight, orderly, crisp, honoring, enthusiastic, dress right dress, meticulous, thorough, etc. You know it
  • So when it comes to the will of God- you know what it looks like
  • Its holy, it honors God, its true to his word, its loving, its excellent, and pure, and right
  • Its noble and sweet. You picture Jesus in the room being proud-
  • So that then is how we should live. That’s then how we should be- for the will of the father.
  • Do his will, be in the family of God- experience the best life.
