“The works of the Lord are great, Studied by all who have pleasure in them.” Psalms 111:2 Studied or “Sought out” as the KJV renders it—His works are the object of meditation and enquiry. The psalmist was no doubt thinking of historical proofs of Jehovah’s goodness to the chosen race, but his words are capable of a much wider range and greater audience, “Now Moses called all Israel and said to them: “You have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land— the great trials which your eyes have seen, the signs, and those great wonders.” Deuteronomy 29:2-3
The Israelites were supposed to always remember God’s great works and pass these on to their children’s children. How God led them out of bondage with supernatural plagues, signs and wonders. God choosing Israel as His covenant people and the institution of the shedding of blood in the Passover lamb. Through the magnificent opening of the Red Sea and the destruction of Pharaoh’s army. They were to speak of how neither their clothes nor their sandals wore out and how they ate manna from heaven.
Talk of the miracle of His commands written with His own hand on stones; how God fought for them against the giants and mighty kings of the land and gave that land to His people. So the psalmist calls all Israel who loves the Lord to study and seek out these things. Paul tells Timothy something similar, “Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.”2 Timothy 2:15 AMPC
His works are great, in number and in power. And the man who loves the Lord will seek and study all His ways and works, “The secret things belong unto the Lord our God, but the things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all of the words of this law.” Deuteronomy 29:29 Even the “small” works of God are worthy and awesome. His wisdom is far beyond our understanding- study it. There’s a whole book of wisdom that one can spend their entire life studying. His creation is more wonderful and glorious than we can know-study it.
Look at the ocean, how God set its boundaries and the water does not overtake the land. His goodness to His people is beyond description- study it. How God in His amazing grace makes you a new creation and restores your heart, mind and soul. As you would go to college to study medicine to be a doctor or go to law school to study law and pour over countless law books and the constitution; His works and His Word are to be studied. We have the Word of God recorded for us in order to know Him, study His character, seek His knowledge and learn His ways.
Nothing else matters but to know God and in that day be found in Him and faithfully doing the work He gave you to do. Nothing else matters. “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.”Philippians 3:8-11 ESV#runyourrace
