- You thought you killed Goliath- 2 Sam 21:15-24
- As always- Great Bible Story- Probably not one that you hear about in Sunday School
- We’re getting close to finishing David in the Bible- Remember 1 sam 17 ? Everyone knows it
- David beats Goliath with a stone- It’s a story that is used all the time to build faith
- The little Guy can beat the big guy. Slay the Giants of your life. Faith in God- All of it
- Here’s the problem tho- If you go and read that story- They chased the other giants away
- And NOW we see that the one giant that David slayed- hasn’t ended the fight with the giants
- Again- Not a story that gets much play- but that’s what’s happening here-
- The philistines are once again at war with Israel and the son of the Giant that David killed shows up with 300 shekel weight spear to kill david- Avenge his father. They get into a fight, one of the sons of the Giant is killed, theres another war, a dude with 12 finges and 12 toes shoes up, davids brother kills him and eventually all 4 sons of the giant are killed by David and his servants.
- If I’m david- I’m in this thing thinking “I thought I Killed Goliath” I thought this thing was done.
- So much time had passed, you have to assume that David assumed that dealing with the giants was over- but apparently not. Goliath, Saul, Abasalom battle after battle and then MORE GIANTS
- You thought goliath was dead? The enemy never gives up!
- Enemies are enemies and they rarely change- they will not give up. David may have killed Goliath, but his 4 sons want to avenge the death of their father. They are not giving up.
- V 15 “David grew faint” V 16 The son Thought He could kill David
- V 18 “there was again a battle” V20 “Yet again there was a war”
- Do you see this? David had killed ONE Giant- and chased the others away- but that didn’t end it
- The philistines are the enemies of Israel and they are not going to give up their attacks
- They want Israel destroyed- they want their land and they want them destroyed
- Mind you- Israel had been warring with the philistines since Saul- This enemy never gives up
- David wrote when he was captured by the philistines- Psalm 56:2 My enemies would hound me all day, For there are many who fight against me, O Most High.
- And that’s the truth isn’t it? HOUND ME ALL DAY
- Psalm 25:1 Plead[a] my cause, O Lord, with those who strive with me; Fight against those who fight against me.
- Read your psalms- you’ll see how many attacks David had to endure- Because enemies never stop- they are relentless to destroy you.
- 1 Peter 5:8 Be ]sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
- What does it mean to you
- Bro- you got to wake up to the reality that the enemy doesn’t not take a day off
- He wants and will do whatever he needs to do to discourage you, depress you and destroy you
- He does not want you to win. To serve God. To prosper. To be happy. He wants destruction
- So you better stay prepared! You may have slayed a giant- but he got 4 sons who didn’t forget
- Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the [a]wiles of the devil.
- You know that scripture- but you have to live it on a daily basis- if you don’t- one day you’ll wake up and you’ll realize that the 4 sons of the giant you slayed are at the foot of your bed
- You don’t have to be fearful or afraid- you have to be PREPARED- you cant let your guard down
- 1 John 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
- David won- the giants were destroyed- Israel went forward- but wouldn’t no war be better?
- John 10:10 says The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.
- That’s what he DOES that’s all he does
- Jesus said in John 16:33 in the world you [a]will have tribulation
- And so you can’t live with this “I thought I killed Goliath mindset” No way- Its not over its never over
- Nothing is- This life is a grind- you make money to spend it. You lose weight to gain it. You toil for stuff that breaks and just when you think its all good- the sons of goliath show up
- Live with an expectancy of attack- don’t take a day off- Complacency signals enemy attack.
- Romans 12:21 1 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
- You thought Goliath was dead? You got get out the root
- David should have killed Goliath and all his brothers when he had the chance
- If you read back in 1 sam 17 it says they chased the philistines and killed some of their wounded- but they didn’t destroyed them all- They just chased them away and thought that meant victory. They went back and plundered their tents an threw a party but they didn’t win
- How would this story have been different if the Isralites had destroyed the giants when they had the chance.
- But they didn’t destroy them when they had the chance- so the sons of the Giant came back.
- Why? Because they didn’t destroy the enemy when they had the chance- let him get away
- Isn’t that just like our enemy? Our sin? If we don’t destroy it completely- it comes back.
- Ephesians 4:27 nor give place to the devil.
- But people do. They figure- well, we killed the biggest one- what could happen? Let the others live and flee and lets keep on living. We got the big one. We got the Goliath- No need to finish
- But NOW WE SEE IT- THE SONS OF THE GOLIATH ALWAYS COME BACK FOR THEIR POUND OF FLESH- The enemy NEVER gives up!
- YOU HAVE TO DESTROY IT ALL- The BIG ONE- The SMALL ONE ALL HIS BROTHERS- You have to be relentless in the destruction of the enemy.
- James 1:15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
- What does it mean to you?
- YOU HAVE DESTROY ALL THE SIN IN YOUR LIFE- ALL OF IT- leave nothing undone!
- You can’t just take care of the BIG one and expect that its enough- His sons are coming
- 2 Corinthians 7:1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
- ALL FILTHINESS- Here’s how it works- you stop looking at porn, but you don’t get the lust out
- You stop stealing but you don’t get the covetness out
- You stop using a drug but you don’t get the self loathing out- STOPPING the ACTION isn’t enough- you have to get out the ROOT- You have to have heart change- DEEP HEART CHANGe
- Psalm 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear
- It all starts with the heart- so you have to do the hard work of heart change- not easy
- Job 14:4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one!
- There’s no one that can dabble in sin and sinfulness and come out clean NONE
- 2 Co 6:15 what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?
- The answer NONE- Have NOTHING do do with ANY OF IT- PULL OUT THE ROOT AND DESTROY
- Numbers 32:23 says be sure your sin will find you out.
- And it WILL- Whatever you don’t destroy comes back- Get out the ROOT AND DESTROY
- Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, [a]unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
- And just like Goliaths sons coming back- sin will come back and if you don’t destroy it gets you
- You thought you killed goliath? You need the help of others
- You cant let up- The Devil never does- and you need to get out the root- but the worst thing you can do is to think you’re going to slay Goliath and his family on your own- you wont
- Its prideful to think that you can make it through this life on your own
- David may have slew Goliath on his own- but he didn’t beat his family without his people
- 17 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid, and struck the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, “You shall go out no more with us to battle, lest you quench the lamp of Israel
- ABISHAI!!! HERE HE IS AGAIN!!! MAN THIS DUDE WILL NOT LET UP
- Can we all be and have an Abashai? Every time you turn around he’s helping David
- Abishai strikes the philistine and then David men say “You stay back, we got this”
