For I am the LORD, I do not change;
Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.
Malachi 3:6 NKJV
There’s so much comfort to be found in this truth: God never changes. He was God in the Old Testament, He is still God of the New Testament and He will continue to reign as Lord forevermore. His character never waivers, therefore I find peace and comfort in Him. He does not change, so I can trust in His promises and place my hope and faith in Him.
When the trials and difficulties of this life hit like a raging storm, I can look to Him and know that He is sovereign. When evil and all kinds of calamity come against me, I know He is still good and that He works all things together for the good of those who love Him (Rom. 8:28). When I walk through the fire, I trust that He is with me because He has said, “I go before you and will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deut. 31:8).
Read your Word, come to know and understand Him and His ways so that you will not be moved. Rest in His faithfulness and promises, take comfort in knowing that God does not change. There’s no need to question Him, because His motives are pure. There’s no need to doubt Him, because He is faithful. When you find yourself lacking, seek Him all the more. Don’t hide your face from Him, don’t turn from Him in frustration, fear, or doubt. He allows those things that are for your good; times of difficulty and testing in the wilderness will shape and refine you if you allow them to. Don’t question His motives, question your own. He doesn’t change, but you must if you desire to follow Him.
Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God;
For I shall praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.
