Be A Good King

Sermon Humility

Be a good King 1 Sam 19 – Sermon Humility

  • I don’t think its too much to ask your leader to possess some basic human decency.
  • We should have leaders that are pretty nice people- live by some basic standards
  •  problem is when we hold them to a standard we don’t hold to ourselves. What good is that?
  • Interesting story here- Jonathan is Sauls son, but hears his dad wants to kill his friend, so he warns him. Convinces dad to not kill David, he agrees, but it doesn’t last long. David starts winning with the philistines, more popular and Saul don’t like it. Saul tries to kill him. Saul sends hitmen to his house. Davids wife Michal (sauls daughter) tries to stall them. Saul seems upset his own daughter isn’t on his side. She even says David tried to kill her! David goes to hideout in Ramah with Samuel- Saul sends hitmen again and they run into prophets every time. Saul goes to investigate and he gets hit with the spirit. He falls out in the spirit and gets humbled by God.
  • Saul is not being a good King here. He’s actually being a bad King and a bad person.
  • Today- lets look at What Saul did and think how we can do better than Saul- Be a good King
Sermon Humility
  1. If you are going to be King- Keep your word
  2. Saul didn’t keep his word to not Kill david- It was lip service
  3. Now Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David;
  4. Jonathan talks to him- says hold on pop- don’t do it
  5. 6 So Saul heeded the voice of Jonathan, and Saul swore, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be killed.” 11 Saul also sent messengers to David’s house to watch him and to kill him in the morning.  15 Then Saul sent the messengers back to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.” 20 Then Saul sent messengers to take David.
  6. Come on Saul! This guy is supposed to be King. Can’t we expect that at the least he is a man of his word?
  7. Numbers 30:2  If a man makes a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
  8. Saul had the Pentateuch! He had to know that lying was a sin- and making oaths was bad
  9. There was swift OT punishment for those in Israel who didn’t keep their word
  10. Saul should have known this- He is the King of Israel-
  11. Ecclesiastes 5:4-5  When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; For He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed— 5 Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.
  12. It is always amazing to me when people don’t keep their word. Don’t show up. Don’t pay their debts. Don’t follow up. Say they are going to be there and they aren’t.
  13. Saul says- I wont kill David and then shortly after- Let me kill that guy! How can you trust him?
  14. David knew what it meant to keep his vows! He was a man of his word!
  15. Psalm 116:14 I will pay my vows to the Lord, Now in the presence of all His people.
Sermon Humility
  1. What Does it mean to you? – Sermon Humility
  2. Are you any better than Saul? Are you someone who keeps your word? can  you be counted on? I tell you who can be- Jay- this dude doesn’t know how to fail. Never let me down once
  3. Pro 20:25 It is a snare for a man to devote rashly something as holy, And afterward to reconsider his vows.
  4. Its hard to be a man of your word! Orders for Egypt, marriage vows, Mortgage, etc
  5. Lev 5:4 4 ‘Or if a person swears, speaking thoughtlessly with his lips to do evil or to do good, whatever it is that a man may pronounce by an oath, and he is unaware of it—when he realizes it, then he shall be guilty in any of these matters.
  6. You don’t have much more than your word. Its all you have. You should keep it!
  7. Even the membership vows that people make to the church- I don’t know why people make them just to break them. Just slither away into obscurity. No commitment. Volunteers?
  8. You would never go to church where the pastors weren’t committed. Shouldn’t you be?
  9. God keeps his word! He is a good who always keeps his word.
  10. Lamentations 2:17 The Lord has done what He purposed; He has fulfilled His word
  11. If God keeps his word- shouldn’t we keep our word as well? Shouldn’t we make our vows serious?
  • If you’re going to be King-Listen to the Holy Spirit
  • Saul didn’t listen to the Holy spirit after repeatedly being told
  • Read v 20-21
  • Notice what happens here- 3 times Saul sends messengers and three times they are overcome with the spirit of God
  • Its very spiritual- they are heading out to go and Capture David- and what happens? Samuel is there having a worship service and everyone is overcome
  • “the spirit of God came upon”- Folks this is the spirit of God moving to protect David and redirect Saul- but he REFUSES to realize it
  • 3 times God tries to Stop Saul!
  • Job 33:14-15 For God may speak in one way, or in another, Yet man does not perceive it. 15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, When deep sleep falls upon men, While slumbering on their beds,
  • Often times God is moving through many different ways and people don’t perceive it
  • The truth is that God will use what ever means he needs to get you to do what he needs you to do. – He’ll use anything
  • Numbers 22 tells a story of Balaam dealing with and Angel and a talking Donkey.
  • Saul had a chance to listen- but he chose not to- He kept moving forward ignoring the voices
Sermon Humility
  • What does it mean to you? – Sermon Humility
  • Do you listen to the Holy Spirit? Do you allow God to lead you?
  • First- God will lead you by his word. Read the word. Study the word. Live by the word.
  • God will not go against his word. He will never lead you anywhere against his word. EVER.
  • Guy I know who I parted ways with- want to marry unbeliever- I wouldn’t marry him. Married, kids, divorce- then his unbelieving wife attacks me and so does he. BRO- It wasn’t of God!
  • What I’m talking about is the nuance of the Holy Spirit when God directs and moves. Timing for me. When should I call, what money should I send, what should I say and when should I say it
  • John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
  • When you have the HS- he will speak to you! He will guide you- Put your life in his hand!
  • I know God! I have a relationship I know what his voice sounds like. I know what he feels like.
  • Jn 8:47 He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”
  • IF you don’t hear from God its probably for a few reasons
  • You’re not saved- God speaks to his own. All God is saying to the sinner is to repent
  • You are rebellious- God doesn’t speak to those who don’t listen
  • You quick to speak and slow to listen- Learn to shut up and listen to God and his word
  • Live your life in total obedience- Time, tithe, talent, relationships, get the SIN out
  •  Typically when you are listening to God he asks more of you- die more not get more

Stay Humble – Sermon Humility

  • Spirit of the Lord comes upon him and he is humbled-
  • 24 And he also stripped off his clothes and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Therefore they say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
  • This idea of lay down naked in the Hebrew is more like get down to his bed clothes
  • But when this would happen in the OT- the stripping was an act of humility-
  • Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.
  • God stripped Saul down to nothing- No kingly garments. You’re nothing without me Saul-
  • If you stay humble you don’t have to be humbled- God Humbled his king- He can humble YOU
  • If you’ve given your heart- he’ll move in your life to humble you- move, take, change
  • Proverbs 11:2 When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom.
  • We see the word of God played out in Sauls life! Pride is a killer! He should have stayed humble
  • What does it mean to you?
  • Are you humble? Like really humble. What do you post social media? What image are you crafting? What are you trying to convince people to think about you? What about in person?
  • Easy to tell- Do you list your accomplishments to others? Think you’re better than others? Think everything you have and say and do is better?
  • Proverbs 3:34 Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble.
  • I try really hard to be humble- The greatest humility
  • Phil 2: 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
  • Dude spilling drink on us- could have flexed on him- Not bragging- giving you an example
  • Matt 23:12  And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
  • As a church we need to be a place of humility. We must never forget where we came from and where God is taking us.
  • I’m worthless without God. I have nothing. I deserve nothing. I am nothing without him.
  • Matthew 18:4 Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
  • Will you humble yourself today?
  • Will you admit that you need God?
  • Will you repent and turn to him?
