LIKE SO MANY is more literally translated as “like most” the apostle Paul says who were corrupting God’s Word: “For we are not, like so many, [like hucksters making a trade of] peddling God’s Word [shortchanging and adulterating the divine message]; but like [men] of sincerity and the purest motive, as [commissioned and sent] by God, we speak [His message] in Christ (the Messiah), in the [very] sight and presence of God.” 2 Corinthians 2:17 Paul uses the Greek, καπηλευοντες, adulterate, the word of God — Like those vintners who mix their wines with baser liquors. By this metaphor the best Greek writers represented the arts of sophists, who, to make gain of their lectures, mixed their doctrine with falsehoods, to render it acceptable to their disciples.
The same concept is used by the prophet Isaiah, “Your silver has become dross, your wine is mixed with water.” (Isaiah 1:22) To adulterate the Word of God is like a bartender mixing his bottles of liquor with water in order to get more out of it and still charge you the same price. Paul says that “most” were already doing this. Deceitful and false teachers learned early on that by mixing the Word and watering it down, they produced more disciples. Whether for gain, or popularity, it didn’t matter why they watered it down, it would and was leading people astray.
This was over 2000 years ago. Let’s fast forward to today’s so-called gospel message. It’s mixed with man’s philosophy and man’s social justice: BLM and LGBTQ agendas. It’s water down to appeal to itching ears and the harder words in Scripture are completely omitted, words like: sin, sexual immorality, idolatry, greed, rebellion, and disobedience. People only want to hear about grace and love without the costly and bloody death of the cross. Jude tells us to “contend for the faith”, not your personal faith, but Scriptural doctrine and the true, unadulterated gospel of peace.
We are not to contend for our own mission- but His mission. We don’t contend for our own works- but His work. Today’s gospel is so completely watered-down, I have a hard time finding any men of God still preaching the gospel. They are out there, but they are the few. When you find one, you better stay connected to that church. It is a precious gem. It is an Ark. Get on board. The most” are preaching wine mixed with so much water it’s barely recognizable as wine. Only the true gospel can save! Anything else leads to hell.
Your social gospel leads to hell. Your climate change and “love your neighbor, get the shot” gospel leads to hell. Your “kingdom now” gospel leads to hell. If the gospel you are hearing allows you to live in your sins, you are on a path to hell. If your gospel is all about amassing stuff, it leads to hell. “God loves you” is not the gospel. We are not all God’s children, only those born again of the Holy Spirit. We are not all of Christ, only those who know His voice and follow Him. Easy-believism and carnal Christianity are a lie.
God still requires holiness in His people!Mixing God’s Word brings the curse: “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.” Galatians 1:8 Changing God’s holy Word brings the curse: “I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.”Revelation 22:18-19 ESV
The only gospel that can save is the same one the apostles preached: “And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38
America needs men like Peter, unafraid to tell people they are sinners in need of a Savior. Courageous men to speak the truth in love for men’s souls. Men who will boldly proclaim God’s righteous standards for His people. He still has a standard. From the mouth of our Lord and Savior: “Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.” Luke 24:44-47
You must be born again: “Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” John 3:3-5 ESV
Receive these words. Contend for the faith and preach the only gospel that saves, “And with many other words he (Peter) bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.” Acts 2:40-41 ESVDo not be found counted with the many, but rather the few. Contend for the unadulterated gospel. #runyourrace
