SAVIOR! DO NOT PASS ME BY! The disciples had been rowing all night against the wind. This word “toiling” literally means “torment”; hence they were tormented all night by the storm. The Sea of Galilee is not more than six miles at its longest crossing, and they were only in its midst after rowing for eight hours. “Then He saw them toiling at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by.” Mark 6:48
The fourth watch, an extra watch added by the Romans if the night was long, was from 3:00 am to 6:00 am. This was when Jesus showed up. The last watch, the final hour. After the torment of the sea, struggling against the waves, hours of fighting the storm and barely making any headway; they saw Jesus walking by. It appeared as if He would have passed them by, but He saw them struggling, putting forth all their strength against the wind and knew their weariness and fear. He had every intention of calming them. He had waited until the appointed time. It was a trial of their faith.
Would they call out in a time of need? It was a lesson to endure hardship. He would show up and calm the storm in that last watch to instill in them thankfulness. Friend, He sees you toiling, He knows your weariness and He will show up in His time. He is walking by, call out to Him!
