- Exodus recounts a pivotal period in the history Israel. begins with the descendants of Jacob, suffering as slaves under the rule of Pharaoh in Egypt. Moses, an Israelite raised in Pharaoh’s palace, is chosen by God to lead his people out of bondage. Through a series of miraculous events, Moses confronts Pharaoh with divine plagues, compelling him to release the Hebrews.
- After their liberation, the Israelites embark on a 40 year journey through the desert, guided by Moses and supported by God’s presence in a pillar of cloud and fire. Along the way, God establishes a covenant with the people, giving them the Ten Commandments as a moral code. their faith is tested repeatedly as they struggle with idolatry, murmuring, and disobedience.
- They reach Mount Sinai, Moses ascends to receive detailed instructions for building the Tabernacle, a sacred dwelling for God’s presence among the Israelites. The book concludes with the Israelites constructing the Tabernacle, signifying their commitment to follow God’s laws and his continued presence with them. The Book of Exodus serves as a testament to God’s faithfulness, deliverance, and the enduring relationship between Him and His chosen people.
- As we walk through this book for at least the next year (or so-there’s no timeline) we’ll walk through this story. We’ll see our history, the redemptive truth of the Gospel and the hope for our future.
- READ Exodus 1:1-15 YOU WILL HAVE VICTORY
- And Joseph died- There is a direct connection and continuation from the Book of Genesis.
- Lists those who started the nation of Israel- The Hebrew Israelites. had a command– and did it
- Genesis 1:28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
- Joseph was the great grandson Abraham, but he’s no longer here- He had rescued the nation from the Famine in the land, through understanding his prophetic dreams and sharing them with the Pharoah. But now, this is a new chapter in the life of Israel towards the promised land
- Exodus 1:7 But the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, multiplied and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.
- Egypt was a very powerful nation that was very Racially divided- Egyptians didn’t mix with Israelites, and because of this distinction- Israel was able to flourish- they kept to themselves
- Exodus records that the new King of Egypt didn’t know Joseph, and apparently showed no kindness to his descendants- v 8 there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.
- Like many power brokers within the biblical record and the historical record of societies- he was worried about the clout and influence that this nation within a nation had- what would they do with their collective power? It could challenge them, destroy them, overtake them
- READ V 9-11 His plan? Enslave them. Overtake them. Limit their influence. Keep them from growing and having power. Make the condition horrible for them and make it difficult.
- We read the truth of the enslavement of the Hebrews, and it’s a by-line- we gloss over it. We don’t really grasp the truth of what it is like to be enslaved. We don’t grasp the truth.
- God had told Abraham in Genesis 15:13 Then He said to Abram: “Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years.
- Joseph died 286 years after this statement to abraham, 64 years later, Moses is born.
- So Israel had already been enslaved 350 years at this point- Israel is living in Slavery as we join
- Israel under slavery for the past 350 and in 80 years, the exodus to 40 years in the desert
- American slavery lasted about 240 years. Despicable horrible part of our history. Disgusting
- None of us will never fully understand the horrible sustained nature of it. You should educate yourself Israel was even longer than that.
- None of us have experienced slavery- but you’ve been enslaved to sin. You’ve lived under task master. You’ve been abused, taken advantage of, been wronged, hurt, treated less than
- Exodus 1:13 So the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with rigor. 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage—in mortar, in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service in which they made them serve was with rigor.
- Can anyone today identify with bitter and hard bondage? Everything just being hard?
- Maybe you don’t know what I’m talking about. When you give your all and it aint enough. When you try your hardest and you fail. When you don’t get the job. You don’t get picked. When your living situation is less than desirable. When you don’t seem to have enough. When it feels like you’re the only person trying to serve the Lord and everyone is coming against you. Anyone?
- Here’s the operative verse I want us to focus on today-
- Exodus 1:12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were in dread of the children of Israel.
- Israel, in the midst of their slavery, their despair, their unthinkable conditions, continued to grow in spite of their affliction. They didn’t let their circumstances keep them from their promises. They multiplied and grew. Their persecutors were in dread.
- You will be afflicted
- Maybe this message isn’t for you. Maybe you’ve never been afflicted or torn down by someone
- Felt like the world was on your shoulders and there was no way to escape it. Under bondage
- First job out of the Army- Horrible working conditions. Seemed no one liked me. Couldn’t win.
- Drove me to despair. New church, family, marriage, wife with health issues, etc.
- If you have never been through it- praise God- But one of the truest promises of the bible, is that you will go through it and God will go with you.
- 2 Corinthians 4:17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory,
- The Good news is that the Bible calls it ‘light affliction’ thanks. Appreciate that.
- There’s different types of affliction-
- self imposed, you keep making bad decisions and are reaping what you’re sowing. Remedy- live by the word of God.
- God isn’t afflicting you directly, you’re just living outside the blessings of God
- Circumstantial- Sometimes it just rains. Time and chance happen to us all. Its hard to live on this planet.
- Spiritual– When you try to live righteously, there will always be affliction, because the Devil and his minions don’t want you to be victorious. Living for Jesus by the Gospel is just hard sometimes.
- Romans 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
- John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
- Think about Israel in this situation- 350 years is a long time. I’m sure that they knew the promises of God that had been passed down to them through tradition, but even the most faithful eventually grow weary
- Working bricks and mortar some hot Egyptian day you probably just go- Why and when?
- Genesis 22:17 blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies.
- Where’s that promise YHWH? When do we possess the gates of our enemies?
- Psalm 22:24 For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from Him; But when He cried to Him, He heard.
- Hebrews 12:1 James 5:11 Psalm 119:71 1 Peter 4:13
- You will multiply
- This is actually my favorite part of this verse- the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. WHAT THEY WERE GOING THROUGH DIDN’T BREAK THEM
- More pain, more growth. More affliction, more strength. More attacks, more victory
- I’m a guy who loves to hear, read and watch stories about people who win and are victorious
- I like sports stuff, business stuff, personal growth stuff. I look at my own life, and I wonder, am I accomplishing enough? Am I being everything God has asked of me?
- Goggins- 200m, 240m (62hrs),100m, 40, 88k, 100k, 50,100,50, 100m, WR 4030pu in 17hrs
- Run 3m 3x a week- go 6 for goggins- complete pain for a week. I’m not goggins.
- 2 Corinthians 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.
- Physical transfers to spiritual and vice versa-. I force my flesh because I want to control it.
- And the promises of God is that when you go through something, he will grow it and YOU.
- Jer 30:19 will multiply them, and they shall not diminish; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.Acts 9:31 Then the churches peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.Acts 12:24 But the word of God grew and multiplied.Deuteronomy 7:12 “Then it shall come to pass, because you listen to these judgments, and keep and do them, that the Lord your God will keep with you the covenant and the mercy which He swore to your fathers. Hebrews 6:14 saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” Genesis 12:2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.
- The Economy of God is when you go through something- he multiplies the blessings from it
- These Task masters must have looked over the Israelites and scratched their heads and thought “what in the world is inside these slaves, the harder we work them the stronger they get”
- We can’t break their spirits. There must be something inside them that we don’t have.
- It says they were in dread of them– 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage—in mortar, in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service in which they made them serve was with rigor.
- That’s the only response for someone who is trying to hurt and control someone who seems to not break under the weight of their oppression- work them harder. But what if they don’t break
- Jokes on you buddy. They must have known- Genesis 12:2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.
- And you got to remind yourself of the truths of scripture! I’m sure they encouraged each other with this- keep your head down, work harder, we will be delivered. We will endure. We will win
- Do you need to remind yourself of that today? Do you need to remind yourself of your team?
- You will have victory
- Psalm 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the Lord delivers him out of them all.
- I don’t want to ruin the story for you- but Israel endures and eventually experiences victory.
- They went from brick maker to great nation who inherited the promised land.
- They didn’t give up. We’re going to walk through this through exodus. Challenges, but victory.
- So when we read James 5:11 Indeed we count them blessed who endure.
- We can really understand what it means to endure through the eyes of the Israelites.
- They are going to go through it. Really go through it and eventually be victorious.
- This is the story of our faith. When you read your bible you will see many people who had to go through something and endure and their eventual victory.
- Is that not the story of our own lives? We all go through stuff. And once we go through it, we’re probably going to through something else again, and God will show his victory again.
- so we read scriptures like- Deu 20:4 for the Lord your God is He who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.’
- That’s a true scripture! Some of you need to get ahold of that today! You’re going through it and you’ve forgotten that victory Is your inheritance! That you will get through it
- 1 Co 15:57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
- Victory over sin, despair, depression, pain, meaningless, loneliness, toil, bricks, taskmasters.
- Do you believe the scriptures? Do you believe that God can and will do what he promised?
- Appropriate it today in Jesus name! Walk in the victory that he provides!
- Romans 8:37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
- More than conquerors. It doesn’t mean that you will just be a conqueror, you will be MORE THAN an conqueror. MORE THAN.
- Do you know how you get that victory?
- GIVE THANKS– 2 Cor2:14 Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ
- Its amazing how a thankful spirit breaks the bondage of the enemy. Thankful for everything
- GIVE PRAISE 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
- DO NOT GIVE INTO FEAR He 13:6 So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
- Don’t give into FEAR- Give into FAITH believe that he can- Don’t walk in fear. Walk in FAITH.
- GIVE IT TO GOD Psalm 108:13 Through God we will do valiantly, For it is He who shall tread down our enemies.
- THROUGH GOD- Its only through him that we will see Israel be victorious- and we will learn- that’s how WE will be victorious- THROUGH HIM. ONLY THROUGH HIM.
- Deuteronomy 28:13 And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them.
