JUDGES RECORDS SUCCESSIVE times of apostasy and its fruit of affliction among God’s people. God had reached the end of His patience with a stiff-necked and rebellious people, “Yet you have forsaken Me and served other gods; therefore I will deliver you no more. Go, cry to the gods you have chosen; let them deliver you in your time of distress.” Judges 10:13-14 So Israel repented, put away their strange gods and served the Lord.
Scripture records, “His (God’s) soul was grieved for the misery of Israel”. Although the Israelites justly deserved the affliction and suffering they were undergoing, God was moved by their misery. Their suffering and pain grieved His heart, just as the miseries of a child grieve and hurt a loving father. God was heart broken by their trouble and was moved with compassion to be merciful towards them.
What does this mean to you? His mercy endures forever and is available to all who cry out for His help, to all who have sinned and fallen short, who are suffering grievous consequences, and who repent and seek forgiveness. We can depend on Him to be touched by our suffering, to take pity on us and to restore us to a place of fellowship and blessing. God’s compassion sent Jesus to reconcile sinners to Himself. Jesus is acquainted with your pain and suffering and is an ever present help in time of need. Call out to Him. He hears, He knows and He cares.
