IDOLATRY DEFINED AS: extreme admiration, love, or reverence for something or someone. We are told in 1 Corinthians 10:14-15, “Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to wise men; judge for yourselves what I say.” There are two things in scripture we are told to FLEE: 1. Sexual immorality (any sex outside of the marriage covenant between a man and a woman) and 2. Idolatry. Now, you might say, “I do not worship idols!” Yet, I must challenge you on your definition of an idol. An idol can be nature.
Do you reverence and adore nature, trees, mountains, beauty; above God? An idol can be an ideology or philosophy. Government can become an idol. For a lot of people, money is an idol. For a mother, her children can become a source of idolatry. In the NT, specifically COVETING (craving or desiring what another possesses) is considered idolatry.
The Bible consistently references that wicked generation of Israelites, “Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted”. So this begs the question: is there ANYTHING that you are exalting above Jesus? Here’s the problem, you might get by for awhile, but that idol will slowly begin to push the Lord out. Jesus said, “you cannot serve two masters”. Whatever is exalted in your heart will eventually become exalted in your life. Do a heart check today. Ask the Spirit if there is anything you are exalting over our Lord and Savior and then FLEE from that thing!#runyourrace
