Not so independent on Independence Day

Matthew 10:16-23

  • Pastor Jay – Last Sunday, spoke of the disciples who were called, no doubt that they were all from different background
  • We don’t have an excuse, if we are honest with ourselves…we can  at least identify with one them
  • They were with Jesus, yet, some did really well, others not so much …He reminded us to self-examine and not be too quick to cast judgement…because we too can fall
  • We too can fall- Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall
  • In Matthew 10:1 – These guys were given power to Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons
  • They were given power to bless or curse, but they had to remember that this power was not of their own
  • They had the independence to give or take away blessings but it had to be in the confines of God’s will- Not outside
  • And all these, was to give God Glory- Show the Power of God and His power in His people

READ MAIN TEXT – Matthew 10:16-23 (Nkjv)

  • Behold I send you in a dangerous place. Even before you go out, know that there is death out there. Some will return some won’t
  • It’s not like one of those bait and switch thing- I am sending you as sheep in the midst of wolves
  • After all, the mission of sheep to wolves is a hopeful one, since we see in the natural world that the sheep, though so feeble, by far outnumber the wolves who are so fierce.” (Spurgeon)
  • There is might in numbers – We are not alone, if we could all take up our position and stop listening to the worldly noise– we would know that we are mighty in Christ Jesus
  • This is an encouragement
  • Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change
  • Be wise as serpents
    • Wisdom would keep them from attracting trouble unnecessarily or show them how to avoid it without compromise. Serpents are attacked by everyone, and must use creativity and wisdom to survive.
    • Remaining harmless would keep them from giving in to the temptation of retaliation
  • Be harmless as doves, have a gentle Spirit- Remember the call is to win hearts and not cause problems
  • You will be brought before the law; they will ask you to stop having church and not worship
  • But don’t worry about what to say…I the LORD will give you what you need to say – at that exact time
    • Almost like the Lord will plant you there, to infiltrate the unjust so that you can deliver the good news for those who want to hear or judgement if they don’t
    • Like in the movies – They put a detective in the Prison system to find corruption (Paul and Silas)
  • Families will betray you- Covid has shown us how that comes around. That the enemy looks for little cracks and widens that gab to bring division among blood relatives
  • We ought to watch out as Christian that this does not continue in the church
    • Mark 3:30-36 – Then His brothers and His mother came, and standing outside they sent to Him, calling Him. 32 And a multitude was sitting around Him; and they said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers [a]are outside seeking You.” But He answered them, saying, “Who is My mother, or My brothers?” 34 And He looked around in a circle at those who sat about Him, and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.”
  • When they persecute you in this city, flee to another…you will not have gone through the city of Israel before the Son of Man comes
  • Do not stall in one city when you are persecuted, keep moving – This was a statement for that time that Judgement would come to Judea before the disciples reached all of Israelites. And it did come through the Roman armies in AD 70
  • How does this apply to us today, it’s a hope that we shall not be overcome by persecution, that God will rescue us – that this is just for a moment
  • Matthew 24:21-22 -For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the [a]elect’s sake those days will be shortened

Now what?

  1. Be ready to be persecuted
  • Matthew 5:10 (Nkjv) But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a [a]busybody in other people’s matters. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this [b]matter.
  • Out there, you will find wolves- But don’t be afraid
  • Pray for Dina and her children – story
  • Today we celebrate independence, but are we really-If we can’t speak of Jesus freely
  • Are we independent if our kids are being groomed to depend of themselves?
    • Proverbs 22:6 -Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it. (Train a child)
  • Are we independent if we are relying on the worldly powers to tell us when we should or should not worship?
  • 2 Timothy 3:10-15 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance,  persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra—what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me.  Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.  But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.  But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them,  and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
  1. Be intimate with Jesus
  • Matthew 10:19-20 – But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
  • If you have no relationship with the Holy Spirit, you will not know what to speak
  • If you don’t listen to the Holy Spirit today, while there is peace, you will not hear Him when you are in trouble
  • John 10:27- My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me
  • The disciples are sent in a world that requires them to see through Gods eyes
  • Psalms 32:8 – I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will guide you with My eye
  • Do you Know Him? Do you really do? Can you pick His voice out in a crowd – a crowded market place?
  • Spend time in Praying and Fasting – Sharpen your axe now (talking to a friend early this week)
  • Jeremiah 29:10-14 Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
  1. Independent or dependent, your choice
  • Depend on me – Matthew 10:9-10 Provide neither gold nor silver nor copper in your money belts, 10 nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food.
    • They depended of God’s provision
  • Matthew 10:8 Heal the sick, [a]cleanse the lepers, [b]raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.
  • Freely they received – given them – Yet, they don’t have anything that is theirs
  • Start from there knowing that everything we have belongs to God…its all His
  • Psalms 24:1 The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.
  • I love the American freedom; I love the independence – But we have forgotten the source
  • And we have translated that to self-governance/ rebelliousness to the things of God
  • I hear lots of people saying, am self-made, they are self-made …. excuse me
  • We are called to be the light of the World, to show others the power of Christ but if Christ is just a seasoning/ addition to our lives- How is the next generations going to be intimate with God
  • How are they going to overcome persecution?
  • Independence from Gods Church
    • Acts 2:41-43Then those who [a]gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ [b]doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles
    • Faith and Victory will be a Praying Church – I want to see our Kids on their knees, crying out to God- And it starts with us. You!!!
  • How are we preparing our country?
    • Proverbs 22:6 – Train up a child in the way he should go,[a]And when he is old he will not depart from it.
  • The disciples were sent out to do miracles, bless, curse or heal- they were independent to do the will of God, but it was in the confines of the Holy Spirit
  • Be independent in exercising what you have been called to be but be Dependent on Christ
  • Because Away from Christ we are nothing.
  • Matthew 6:31-33 herefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
  • John 16:33 – These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you [a]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
