2 Sam 6- Indiana Jones was right- you shouldn’t touch the ark. Don’t look at it – Worship
This is a story about right and wrong worship. We don’t sing songs here- we worship
Songs TO God- Not songs TO us. Its for HIM. You have to get worship right.
- Don’t give God convenient worship
- The beginning of this story, and the context of it, is that the Ark of the covenant has been moving around for a while- with the Philistines, in Bet Shemesh, Ekron, and most recently in the house of Avinidav for 20 years and now David is bringing it into Jerusalem
- The ark represented the presence of God- where it went- he went. And he had standards of how the ark was to be dealt with. Our God is a God of standards. He has demands.
- 3 So they set the ark of God on a new cart.
- Why? Convenience. Probably wanted to be innovative. Maybe the priests were AWOL or didn’t want to carry it. Or maybe some guy said “Lets make a cart, that would be easier”
- Either way- It was wrong. They weren’t supposed to be doing it. It was improper.
- Ex 25: 14 You shall put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark, that the ark may be carried by them
- 1 chron chronicles it- David realized it- There’s a right and a wrong way to worship God and however he wants to be worshipped is up to him. Carry it? Ok. That’s what the Lord wants
- 1 Chron 15: 2 Then David said, “No one may carry the ark of God but the Levites, for the Lord has chosen them to carry the ark of God and to minister before Him forever.”
- Then he says in 1 Chron 15:11-13 PROPER Order
- What does it mean to you
- Have you put your worship on a cart instead of carrying it like the Lord told you to?
- We want our worship the way we want it. We want to to sound like we want it to sound, and we want to be the way we want it to be.
- Leviticus 10:1-2 Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. 2 So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord.
- Some people literally have a profane fire before the Lord. They want songs about them, to them and for them. Their style. Their sound. The songs they like. Some people refuse to worship all together. Its why they show up late to worship and don’t get involved.
- 1 Corinthians 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
- Worship isn’t supposed to be easy for you- we create worship experiences that benefit us
- Wheeling the ark is easier than carrying it- so we make a cart to help us worship
- God never desires convenient worship. We shouldn’t dumb-down worship for attraction
- 1 Chr 21:24 Then King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will surely buy it for the full price, for I will not take what is yours for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings with that which costs me nothing.”
- Mal 1:6-14 READ
- Don’t treat God as a common thing
- 6 Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God
- In this story- They put the ark on a cart, have animals pull it, the animal stumbles, and then Uzzah grabs it to keep it from stumbling and he gets struck dead for touching it.
- No one to touch it. He violated it. Dead. Somewhere he lost sight of God’s holiness
- 1 sam 6:19 over 50 thousand people died for looking into the ark
- You guys remember Raiders of the Lost ark? Melting face dude? Profaned God’s holiness
- The opposite of holy isn’t unholy- its common. Treating it as a common thing
- 1 sam 13:11-14 Samuel chastises saul for offering a wrong sacrifice
- 1 cor 11 Paul chastises the Corinthian church for making common the Lord’s supper
- Common- When you dated your spouse you got dressed up- now- “I showered”
- Isaiah 46:9 Remember the former things of old, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me,
- God is HOLY- He’s PRECIOUS- The ungodly recognize the holiness of God more than the believer. Respect the church, the pastor, the Lord. Believers? Eh- Its just God- we’re buddies
- Isaiah 29:13 Therefore the Lord said: “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,
- What does it mean to you?
- Have you lost the holiness of God in your life and are you treating him as a common thing?
- Mark 7:6-7 READ
- Do you prepare before you come to church to worship God and hear from him?
- Do you have any fear or respect for the Lord in worship and the word?
- This is what amps me up- People coming in late and getting up and down in worship and the word- It happens RARELY- but just stay put (what if I stopped worship to get a water)
- PLAN- I don’t drink a bunch of liquid before a movie because I don’t want to get up.
- 9 David was afraid of the Lord that day- that’s what the holiness produced- FEAR
- Not a worry- but an awesome respect for the Lord and what he was doing
- He didn’t move the ark for 3 months. Yea- I’d readjust and figure out if someone died
- Numbers 26:61 And Nadab and Abihu died when they offered profane fire before the Lord.
- John 4:23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.
- Truth and no spirit- Legalism- Having fear is respectful, but know the spirit behind it
- Spirit and no truth- Licentiousness- We’re free to do whatever we want- God is LOVE
- Spirit AND Truth- You must walk in both of them.- Settle in for 70 mins.
- Worship with all your might
- 14 then david danced before the lord with all his might
- Once the heart was right and the order was right and ark was right- David got down to worship.
- They were so excited to worship the Lord CORRECTLY they couldn’t even go 6 paces without stopping for a worship service-
- 13 And so it was, when those bearing the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, that he sacrificed oxen and fatted sheep.
- People say- why? ORDER. SACRIFICE. And THEN worship with all your might- exuberantly
- He was in priestly garments- the ephod- Not for SHOW but for GOD
- Deuteronomy 6:5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
- David was doing that! Worshipping with all his MIGHT- POWERFUL worship!
- Hallah- make foolish- TO boast or brag, rave about God to the point of looking foolish. PSa 63:3 I will praise you as long as I live
- Yadah- Worship with extended hands- Psay 134:2 Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the Lord
- Barak- To bless the Lord PSa 72:15
- Tehillah- To sing with the mouth Psa 22:3 You are enthroned as the holy one, you are the one Israel praises -There are over 300 bible mandates to sing
- Zamar- Pluck the strings of an instrument- To touch the strings
- Todah and Shabach- To address with a loud voice or shout- But even deeper- Its gratitude for God’s delieverance that is promised. Psa 56 believing God will do it- so you praise
- Hallelujah- Cant be translated- must be transliterated Hallel- boast and brag on- Jah- Short name for God. An outcry for someone who is excited about God 24 times between psa 104-150
- What does it mean to you
- Where you at with your worship? What do you think about and how do you act in worship
- I’m a bit reserved. You might be a little more exuberant. Worship is collective. Don’t hit anyone. Got to have decency in it though. Don’t flail your neighbor.
- But you can worship more then hands in your pockets looking at the band
- People say- I don’t worship that way- well you better worship some sort of way
- I don’t see any bible words for holding a cup of coffee watching.
- Mark 12:30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.
- Is that your heart when you’re in worship? When you gather with the church?
- 1 Chronicles 29:11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, The power and the glory, The victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, And You are exalted as head over all.
- Don’t let other people stop you from worshipping
- 20 How glorious was the king of Israel today
- 22 And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight.
- She chips at David and david says- You think this is undignified? I’ll become even MORE undignified! I’m not gonna let you hold ME back!
- Isaiah 51:7 7 “Listen to Me, you who know righteousness, You people in whose heart is My law: Do not fear the reproach of men, Nor be afraid of their insults.

- Phil 2:5-8
- 1 Corinthians 4:10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored!
