Jesus is the GOAT (Jesus Goat)

Jesus Goat
  • Jesus Goat
  • Talk about Invite Sunday (Oct 31) Matthew 12:38-42 JESUS IS THE G.O.A.T.
  • What is Jesus saying here- He’s saying to these Pharisees that want proof that he’s already given them proof enough and that they shouldn’t need any more proof. He’s done enough.
  • He calls them adulterous for wanting a sign and says- you’ll get the same sign as Jonah- a man who goes into the deep for 3 days and comes out and tells you to start living for God and not your sin. And then he says- I’m greater than Jonah. I’m greater than Solomon. Just watch what happens.
  • I think we all at some point have tested God- Either we tested him with our mouth, our actions. We’ve prayed prayers that we wanted to use as a test to see if God was real or he would move
  • People are always enamored with people who are the “Best” at something- consequently, the amount of people who are, is much less than when you could be the best in your town.
  • We follow a savior who is the greatest of all time- he is the man, the one, the one and only.
  • Title of Todays message- Jesus is the G.O.A.T.
  1. Jesus didn’t have to give them proof- he was the GOAT – Jesus Goat
  • 38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
  • On numerous occasions, Jesus did in fact give them many proofs. Water into wine, healing the sick, rasing the dead. Fulfilling prophecy- but it wasn’t enough
  • Look back at John chapter 9- this man, who was born blind was healed by Jesus- and the response of the pharisees was to challenge his healing, accuse his parents, and then cast him out for testifying the truth
  • Their reply to him was- john 9:28 Then they reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples. 29 We know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where He is from.”
  • When Jesus says- “an adulterous generation seeks after a sign” he’s using word language here that shows the relationship that Israel had with Jehovah- namely a bride and her husband
  • Same imagery as the church and Jesus in the new testament
  • And to use this adulterous language is to say- you’re cheating on your spouse- you’re not sticking with the relationship
  • The adultery of the Jews before Jesus was that they didn’t trust God- they didn’t keep idols out of their lives and worshipped other gods- God called them adulterers for this-
  • The Jews of the OT had many many signs to show them that God was God- (Manna, parting of the red sea, floating axe head, parting of the Jordan, water from a rock,  people healed, destruction of armies, sun standing still, the firey furnace, Daniel in the Lions den etc etc etc)
  • Jesus is saying- How many more signs do you need bro? do you not remember what I’ve already done? Your heart has already turned?
  • 1 Corinthians 1:22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom;
  • So he says- the only sign you’re going to get is the sign of Jonah-
  • The people of Ninevah repented when Jonah told them to- and they had much less evidence than Jesus had given these pharisees- and they had turned from evil- but why not now?
  • Jesus says- I’ll give you one more sign- but its going to be me dying and raising from the dead
  • What does it mean to you?
  • Are you holding Jesus hostage because of something he hasn’t done for you?
  • People do this often- they put a limit on what they will respond to God- until “this” or they will serve him until “This” – they are wanting some sort of “sign” they want more ‘proof’
  • I’ve seen it more times than I can count- not serving Jesus because of something that happened to them, something wont happen for them, OR even worse- seeing God do something and then not serving him- On facebook seeing people enjoying what they had prayed for
  • Its an adulterous generation- Seen people get married, marriages saved, kids born, healed, jobs gotten, lives saved, and BOUNCE- they gone.
  • Deuteronomy 6:16 “You shall not tempt the Lord your God as you tempted Him in Massah.
  • Are you tempting/testing God? Some of the worst theology out there is “God could stop me if he wanted to” or “I’m still alive aren’t I?”. Yes, by the grace of God you are, but some people take it too far- they think because they haven’t been caught, or that they still are used by God that for some reason God is pleased with him- Samson used by God when he was in Sin.
  • God loves people enough to use a sinful person- but its not his approval on them.
  • Don’t question God- trust him through the process- even when you don’t see it he’s working
  • Hebrews 3:8– Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness,
  • That’s what people do tho- they harden their hearts- justify their actions because of no sign
  • Here’s why people demand a sign- no real intention of changing- they keep moving the goal posts so they can justify their inactivity- ‘when God does this’ then I’ll come to him.
  • Consequently- people are amazing at excuses- all to justify laziness and responsibility
  • Jesus did more than enough for me on the cross- I don’t need more- That’s enough
  • Think about this- Jonah had to go into the belly of the whale for 3 days to learn that he shouldn’t tempt God- I’m sure while he was in the belly he probably wished he would have just gone to ninevah instead of tarsish- (Church hasn’t been that good lately- just wait)
  • We don’t have to wonder what he said in the Belly- we know- Jonah 2:8 “Those who regard worthless idols Forsake their own Mercy. 9 But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.”
  • Jonah learned this in the belly- Don’t go after worthless idols- do what God tells you, w/o a sign
  • And that God saves- He put his full faith and assurance back into God’s hands.
  1. Jesus is the GOAT The only sign you need is the cross – Jesus Goat
  • READ 40-41
  • This imagery of the sign of Jonah is Jesus alluding to the crucifixion and resurrection story- Jesus is going to be crucified and buried in the ground for 3 days and then come back.
  • In the same way that Jonah was swallowed by a whale-
  • Jonah 1:17 Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
  • The reason that Jonah was swallowed by the whale was because he was thrown overboard from a boat- why? Because he was on a boat on its way to Tarshish. There was a storm because Jonah was supposed to go to Ninevah and tell them to repent of their wickedness, but Jonah ran from God- so God had him sit in the belly of a whale for a few days to get his heart right
  • When he got out- he went to ninevah and told them to repent- and they DID
  • Sure would have been easier if he would have just gone to ninevah the first time.
  • Jonah 3: 4 And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day’s walk. Then he cried out and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” 5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.
  • And then here’s what God did in verse 10 Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.
  • The people repented- crisis was averted- and then the people were saved
  • And Jesus says- those people who responded to Jonahs call are going to hear about what you guys did here and say “we repented when Jonah preached, what’s your problem?”
  • What does it mean to you
  • Today as we sit here- this is a much different scenario than what was going on back then
  • Jesus was speaking about something that was going to happen- we are speaking about something that DID happen- Jesus DID raise from the grave Jesus DID die for YOUR sins
  • Jesus did die and rise again- we know this- its true- Jesus asked people to believe in him BEFORE he was crucified and rising from the dead- but NOW when he asks- he holds out his crucified hands before you and says- Is this enough for you to believe? Is this enough for you live for me?
  • Before I was saved- I knew the stories- I knew all about it- but when I got saved was when I decided to stop pretending it wasn’t true and that needed to live like it was true
  • 2 Corinthians 6:2 For He says: “In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation
  • That’s a right now scripture- right now- you can receive it by faith, but it doesn’t take nearly as much faith as it did back then on a ‘maybe’ this is true
  • It doesn’t take much faith to drive a car because you see it and do it all the time- parachute yes
  • Why do people reject salvation?
  • Pride. Love of Sin. Lack of Faith. Afraid of what people will think.
  • We live in a time where everything you do is scrutinized- and people don’t want it
  • Easier to go with the flow than it is to fight the people around you
  • And once you become a Christian? It offends everyone around you just by not doing what they do- people get super annoyed by people who don’t follow the crowd- infuriates them.
  • So don’t let your heart get hardened. Don’t let it turn into a lost opportunity
  • Do it NOW- I look back on my HS football- could have been different ( I didn’t try)  cant go back. This aint HS football- this is real life- your life can be changed NOW- trajectory NOW
  • Hebrews 3:13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
  • Relationships cease to improve when one persons heart gets hard- time just goes on too long and its hard to get it going again- its human nature- happens with rel. with God.
  • And that’s what sin does-it just closes the door- you go too far and you can’t come back.
  • Here’s what happens- if you continue in your sin- your heart gets hard and you stop hearing the Gospel- you stop hearing the truth of God’s offer for salvation- NOW is the time to respond!
  • If you would just respond to the Lord’s simple promptings, you wont find yourself down a bad path
  1. Jesus is greater – Jesus Goat
  • My son and I have talked ad nauseum about who is the GOAT in certain sports. Floyd Mayweather is the GOAT, Brady is the Goat, Jordan is the Goat, Arnold is the Goat,
  • Obsessed with greatness- when greatness is RIGHT NOW in JESUS
  • 41-42 READ
  • Jesus says- I’m the Goat. You aint going to find better.
  • There’s two parts to this statement- first- that Jonah preached repentance and people did, secondly that the queen of Sheba came to Solomon to find wisdom and she found it
  • 1 kings 1:10 Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the Lord, she came to test him with hard questions.
  • Repentance and wisdom were both found- and the people of ninevah and the queen of sheba are going to condemn the currently people listening because they don’t repent and they don’t listen to the wisdom.
  • And Jesus says- I am greater than Jonah who preached repentance. I am greater than Solomon who had knowledge
  • God said to Solomon- 1 Kings 3:12 behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you.
  • And Jesus says- boom- I’m greater- and you guys better recognize
  • What Does it mean to you
  • I’ve met a few- Arnold, Kareem, but that didn’t change my life- meeting Jesus changed my life!
  • Jesus is the Goat- you need to repent and listen to his wisdom
  • Hebrews 1:2-4 READ
  • The wisdom of Jesus has changed the face of this Earth in a way that no other person has
  • People quote him without attribution, western culture is centered around HIM, he saves people from sin, he repairs broken hearts, he saves marriages, raises children, fixes finances, gives hope, peace, love, purpose and direction. There truly is no one greater than him.
  • John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
  • What does it mean to you
  • Obviously  repent- turn from your sins and turn towards Jesus in faith and be forgiven
  • But also- ingest the knowledge of Jesus- center your life around his teachings-
  • John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
  • And they are! When I’m down, when I need to know where to turn- when I feel like I can’t go on- the words of Jesus are where I go- I need him to speak in to my life.
  • Rev 22:13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”
  • Do you know what that means? That means that every last thing from front to back is Jesus
  • That means that Jesus can and will speak all manner into our lives and we can stake our life on it
  • Jesus is the GOAT- You can put all of your hopes in HIM- respond- and live for him
