2 sam 9 Be Kind- Rewind
Back in the day- rented VHS tapes- Be kind- rewind- Premise- someone else was kind
- Since David received God’s kindness, he wanted to share it with someone else
- Now David said, “Is there still anyone who is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”
- After David had experienced victory, established himself as king- his response was to find someone else to bless. It was a natural response to the protection and grace he had received
- Attacked by Saul- pursued by Saul. Protected and delivered- made king- Huge blessings
- He wanted to bless someone else because he was blessed- You should do this to!
- David and Jonathan had entered into covenant with each other- and David wasn’t going to forget the covenant that he had made- The blessings extended past the death of Jonathan
- The commitments that Bible people made mattered- They didn’t enter into them lightly
- Where was Mephibosheth? He may have thought that because there was a new king- that he would be executed- Chances are that Mephibosheth was in hiding- afraid for his life
- 4 So the king said to him, “Where is he?”
- What kindness did David show him? Khesed- From the root- to bow- to be equal with.
- When you show someone kindness- you are operating on an equal plane with them- either going down to where they are, or bringing them up to where you are.
- It’s a submission of yourself and an elevation of the other person-
- This is a huge deal in Biblical society- Not something to be taken lightly- for a king to associate with the lowly- The only answer is he actually meant it when he said the vow and intended to keep it- marriage, debts, oaths, vows. Words mean something- They do.
- Mephibosheth may have been scared- it must be why David assured him such as this-
- 7 So David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.”
- But he made him big promises- you’ll be at my table- you’ll be taken care of.
- Kindness upon Kindness simply because he was the son of his best friend Jonathan
- 1 Sam 20: 42 READ the covenant between David and Jonathan.
- We are Mephibosheth
- Mephibosheth did nothing to receive this blessing other than he was related to Jonathan
- It was because of the kindness of DAVID not of Mephibosheth that he received the blessing
- It was ALL David- HIS Kindness. HIS holding to his oaths. HE keeping his covenants.
- God came looking for you before you were looking for him, God extends us kindness because of HIS goodness, not ours. It is because of HIS covenant promises,
- David knew these promises- Psalm 106:45 And for their sake He remembered His covenant, And relented according to the multitude of His mercies.
- All through the OT we see a God who keeps his covenant to his people- He doesn’t give up- he shows kindness to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob etc because of who HE IS
- David shows us the heart of God in this instance- that HE shows kindness to MEphiboseth
- But we are Mephibosheth here- we’re lame, broken, worthless, with nothing to offer
- But GOD in HIS Kindness- comes and rescues US from OUR pain- our Misery- Our bad decisions
- Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
- God didn’t look down on us and save us because of our worthiness- but because of his greatness
- 1 John 4:9-10 In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
- But we serve a God of Forgiveness- he always has been!
- That’s the love of God- that he would come to US and love US. We weren’t loving HIM-
- ITS HIS NATURE TO FORGIVE 1 Kings 8:50 and forgive Your people who have sinned against You, and all their transgressions which they have transgressed against You; and grant them compassion before those who took them captive, that they may have compassion on them
- We were lame. We were broken. We were unworthy.
- We must never forget who we were and where we were when We were saved-
- Do you know what that word means? Saved from SIN, OURSELVES, WRATH- I’m SAVED
- Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
- Ecclesiastes 7:20 For there is not a just man on earth who does good And does not sin.
- Friend with heart attack- HE couldn’t see it- others did like a elephant on his chest-
- But Jesus Came to CURE us of our brokenness
- Matt11:4-5 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: 5 The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
- When Jesus came to town- people’s lives got better not worse- HE was the CURE to our brokenness
- John 8:36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
- Romans 8:37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
- Maybe you’ve never been tormented with regret. Filled with guilt and shame. Lost. Worthless. Meaningless. Alone. Dejected. Forgotten. Without direction. But HE SAVED ME
- We Get HUGE Blessings we DON’T Deserve

- Matt 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
- We must receive it in humility. He returns to us what we have lost (even our own faults) and gives us even MORE. We get a seat at the kings table, access to the king and fellowship
- This is Mephibosheth and this is US- Many plans orchestrated to produce salvation-
- We are still weak and lame – we need the king more than the king needs us- SAVE US
- How did Mephibosheth respond? V6he fell on his face and prostrated himself.
- How can we not worship the God that saved us? How can we not give him our lives?
- The beginning of our faith was 12 guys willing to DIE so others could be saved.
- We are David
- In this story- we are mephibosheth, but we are also David. What are we going to do with what has been given to us?
- David didn’t promote himself, save himself, make himself king. Chosen, set apart and blessed
- And because David had a heart for God- he comes to himself and realizes- Hey- what am I going to do now that I’m on top of the mountain? Who can I bless? Who can I help?
- Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,
- Pr 11:25 The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.
- Luke 14:13-14 But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. 14 And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”
- These are Gospel truths about who we are and who we should be as people who have been set free from the Law of sin and death. For those who have been made a king- to show KINDNESS
- What are some of the ways we can do that?

- This life is hard- and its hard to bless people who don’t want it or deserve it-
- In our FLESH we want to return evil for evil- but we can’t do it.

- How do you do that? At home. At work. Where you live. At Church. It takes awareness and diligence to be able to apply this scripture to your life
- When you get home and see a neighbor- go over, not inside. Don’t rush out of church.
- And they may not deserve it! That’s ok!
