1 sam 16:1-13 the anointing of David as king

As a kid- everyone wanted to ‘be the leader’ they think that adult leadership is the same

You get to tell everyone what to do- but no- being the leader is RESPONSBILITY- are u ready?

  • So you’re going to be king and a queen! It may not feel like it- but you’re going to be!
  • 2 Timothy 2:12 If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us.

  • As you’re preparing to be a king- there’s a few things we can get from this story that I want you to focus on . You may not feel like you’re a king or queen- but you are- God is preparing you

  1. You are not forgotten
  • They are looking for the new king- 11 And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?”
  • Samuel had looked at all the other brothers and was like- this al you got? Jesse the dad is like- oh yea- the young ruddy one- he’s out in the field with the sheep- but you wouldn’t want him
  • Forgotten even by his own father. His Father hadn’t even considered him for the job of king
  • Living out with the sheep- its very easy to think that you have been forgotten
  • Very easy to think that you are just going through the motions when you’re tending sheep
  • How many days did David wake up to go out to the field with the sheep and thought “what are my other brothers doing? This is a servants job, and here I am out there with the sheep”
  • David may had been forgotten by his family- but he was not forgotten by God- God knew where he was, what he was doing. God knew exactly where he was. Preparing him to be KING
  • I don’t care who you are- but you want to feel validated and supported by your family
  • You want them to be proud of you- you want them to support what you do and how you live
  • David said later in life Psalm 27:10 When my father and my mother forsake me, Then the Lord will take care of me.
  • David understood- that the love of God from him and to him is the greatest satisfaction- God hasn’t forgot him. God remembered him when his own family forgot him
  • Moses said to Joshua- Deut 31: And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.”
  • 1 Kings 15:5 because David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
  • What does it mean to you?
  • You may be tending the sheep in, and feel forgotten- but God has not forgot about you
  • He sees what you’re doing and knows where you are. It might FEEL like you’re forgotten but no
  • Matt 10:30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
  • You are valuable. You were valuable enough for Jesus to come and die for you- and now- that you’re in Christ- God loves you and values you. He has not forgot about you!
  • While you were still a sinner, God loved you, how much more so now that you are his child?
  • Psa 56:8 You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book?
  • When you feel alone- your prayers are not hitting the ceiling. They are being heard!
  • Story of being with people for weekend and not getting chowder. Left out. Outsider gave it
  • God is the guy who comes down the stairs and gives you his portion. Everyone else forgot.
  • Hebrews 11:8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
  • You may not know where you are going. You may not know what you’re doing with the sheep of your life or where you’re going- but God has not forgot about you!
  1. God Sees your heart (He was not judged on his appearance) There he is
  • When Samuel was going to look for the new king- he was instructed by God
  • 1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
  • See- when Saul was chosen as king- 1 Samuel 9:2 READ
  • The people had seen Saul’s appearance and assumed he’d be a great King- but he wasn’t
  • God wanted the right king this time around and it wasn’t based on mans wisdom
  • Samuel told Saul in 1 Samuel 13:14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart
  • God had seen what a self directed self seeking king produced and now he wanted HEART
  • Heart is everything! You can’t teach heart! Skills and abilities will only take you so far.
  • (asking the front desk lady about hires- if you aint nice to her- you aint getting job)
  • This is the truth about the Lord- Jeremiah 17:10 I, the Lord, search the heart,I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.
  • God looks at the heart! And he saw in David the heart that he was looking for!
  • PSALM 18:1-3 Heck- he wrote over 70 of the psalms! Worship songs for the Lord!
  • Acts 13:22 says that David was a man after God’s own heart!
  • What does it mean to you?
  • The Bible says you will be reigning with Christ one day- what will God say about your heart?
  • God knew Sauls heart, he knew David’s heart, and he knows your heart as well!
  • 1 Peter 3:4 describes it as “The hidden person of the heart” that God will look at
  • Which probably means- we should be doing whatever we can to clean out the heart
  • DAVID’S HEART-Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.
  • David had the heart of God because he wanted God to change his heart!
  • We want our hearts to be pure before God! Not just work on the outside but the inside!
  • Stop the action but then stop the desire. Losing weight- stop eating the donuts.
  • God can use someone with a pure heart! And he desires clean hearts!
  • Jesus said- Matthew 23:26 Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.
  • We can let the Holy Spirit do the work- but we must submit to him and let him have his way
  1. God sees what you’re doing (he was just tending the sheep) keeping the sheep
  • Think about this- David was just tending sheep. He wasn’t doing kingly stuff. He wasn’t preparing his resume, he was just tending sheep. A servants job- that his dad asked of him
  • But God was watching. Watching him do what he was told to do
  • Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of the Lord are in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good.
  • David knew this! Psa 121:8 – The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore
  • Figure this- A sheep herder would a servants job during this time- not a sons job
  • But for whatever reason, David’s father Jesse had him out in the field working the sheep
  • Oh the time David must have spent fellowshipping with God out the fields with just the sheep!
  • We can assume from this- David was obedient, he was humble, he was doing what was asked
  • Hebrews 4:13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
  • God saw David in the field with the sheep- no one else did- but most importantly God did
  • What does it mean to you?
  • As you’re tending the sheep of your life- you have to know that God sees what you’re doing
  • If you’re tending sheep- you’re tending sheep- but if you’re going to do it- do it correctly.
  • Whatever job you may have, wherever you may live, whatever ministry you are doing, God sees
  • SINCE God can see you wherever you are-
  • Colossians 3:23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,
  • When you work to God and not to men- you will never tire because you know God is there
  • People will never know the sacrifices you make, the extra work you do, the thanklessness of it
  • But we SHOULD Be working as unto the Lord
  • Eph 6: 7 with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, 8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free.
  • Jesus said what you do in Secret, God will reward openly.
  • Typically, people will see the result, and not see the work- The tireless hours of it what it takes
  • Nick- Strong man- 13k calories- hours and hours for years in the gym- Just want to eat
  • Spiritually its no different- Christianity isn’t about heralding what you’ve done- you just do it
  • 1 Peter 2:15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men—
  • When you work unto the Lord with no recognition- just hoping for what God can do- people see
  • And whn people see it- they hopefully will know that you are different- whose you are
