Law and order Hebrew 5:1-10
What comes to mind when I say, Law and Order?
- The show – Crime fighting
- Developed country (Rights) developing country (Survival)
- Depending on where you are spiritually- these terms might mean something totally different thing to you based on a variety of things.
- If you have listened to Deacon Tiffany, then you might be thinking about what the Government is doing or not doing
- Today I want us to look at the part we play when it comes to God’s law and order
- Don’t talking about others not doing – Let self-examine
- Law- a set rules that regulates the actions of people and there are consequences when you don’t follow them.
- Order – Directions and instruction
- The Bible is full of laws and an orderly way to do them.
- An order is established to be a guideline,
- In order to build a home- you need count the cost and start by laying the foundation
- For you to enjoy the benefit of a marriage bed, you need to be married
- For you to be considered a child of God, you have to die to self
- READ THE SCRIPTURE – HEBREW 5:1-10
- Verses 1-4 gives the definition of and the criteria (Law) for being a priest and verse 5-10 (Order) show how Christ meets these criteria
- Law:
- High priest is taken among man
- Appointed for men, for your benefit – our benefits
- No one chooses himself – He is chosen by God just like Aaron was
- Jesus Himself was chosen as well- By God
- Hebrews 5:5 So too Christ (the Messiah) did not exalt Himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed and exalted by Him Who said to Him, You are My Son; today I have begotten You;
- The office of the Priest is nothing to campaign for- It is a chosen position by God
- There is no microwave ranking up
- There are laws and order that govern what we are all called to do
- There are dire consequences for trying to do it outside Gods law and order
- This is what happens to people that played Priest:
- Korah thought he could do it better than Moses – Swallowed by the ground (Numbers 16:20-35)
- Saul was impatient – Rejected by God (I Samuel 13:8-14)
- Uzziah appointed himself as a priest because he was strong– Leprosy (2 Chronicles 26:16)
- Order
- The Priest offer both Gifts and sacrifices for our sins
- He is compassion on those who are going astray (gentleness and forbearance towards the ignorant and erring – but he is also subject to weakness
- He offers sacrifices for his people- himself included as well
- Carrying them in their thoughts – On the breast plate of the high priest, there is 12 stones of Israelites and the shoulder straps were engraved with the names of the tribes – They were all in the heart and shoulder of the priest
- Make it easier for your pastors – Hebrew 13:17 – Obey your spiritual leaders and submit to them [continually recognizing their authority over you], for they are constantly keeping watch over your souls and guarding your spiritual welfare, as men who will have to render an account [of their trust]. [Do your part to] let them do this with gladness and not with sighing and groaning, for that would not be profitable to you [either].
- Obedience
- This is the glue what brings everything together
- Hebrew 5:8 – Although He was a Son, He learned [active, special] obedience through what He suffered
- The joy of suffering
- Though He was God…… (If Jesus can be obedient – there is no excuse of us not being to Him)
- He was human – He cried out Father remove this from me
- Having been perfected – He won the right to be the author of internal salvation for all who obey
- Hebrew 5:9 – And, [His completed experience] making Him perfectly [equipped], He became the Author and Source of eternal salvation to all those who give heed and obey Him
- He listened to authority set before him- so He could inherit that title – High Priest
- Obedience at the garden
- Matthew 26:38-39 Then He said to them, My soul is very sad and deeply grieved, so that [a]I am almost dying of sorrow. Stay here and keep awake and keep watch with Me. And going a little farther, He threw Himself upon the ground on His face and prayed saying, My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will [not what I desire], but as You will and desire.
- Makes sure we know how hard Jesus worked to be obedient
- We too can, if willing be obedient
- He became by obedience – we receive by obedience
- Leviticus 26:3-10 – If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments and do them, I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase and the trees of the field yield their fruit. 5 And your threshing [time] shall reach to the vintage and the vintage [time] shall reach to the sowing time, and you shall eat your bread to the full and dwell in your land securely. 6 I will give peace in the land; you shall lie down and none shall fill you with dread or make you afraid; and I will clear ferocious (wild) beasts out of the land, and no sword shall go through your land. 7 And you shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight; your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. For I will be leaning toward you with favor and regard for you, rendering you fruitful, multiplying you, and establishing and ratifying My covenant with you. And you shall eat the [abundant] old store of produce long kept, and clear out the old [to make room] for the new
- Go back the basics
- Where do we start to work on our obedience?
- The 10 commandments – Exodus 20:1-17
- The Call for action:
- Psalms 119:34 – Give me understanding, that I may keep Your law; yes, I will observe it with my whole heart.
- Psalms 119:56 – Remove from me the way of falsehood and unfaithfulness [to You], and graciously impart Your law to me.
- Psalms 119:56 – This I have had [as the gift of Your grace and as my reward]: that I have kept Your precepts [hearing, receiving, loving, and obeying them].
- Jesus cries to be saved from death, but only after experiencing death first.
- I know in my know, know that you might be crying out today to be saved
- And yes, you will be saved but only through death to self
- Let everything go, put God first and Worship Him and Him alone
