WHAT MANNER OF LOVE. Jesus was preparing his disciples in the upper room before the feast of the Passover, He washed the disciples’ feet and spoke to them words of life, “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”” John 13:35
Now, many have interpreted this to mean how they “love” the world; but this here is the Greek word “agape” and is meant specifically for those who are planted in the house of the Lord. The Christian then is commanded to agape, love in a greater and more special way, all other Christians. This agape love is our distinguishing mark of being His followers. It is a self-giving and sacrificial love that seeks the good of our Christian family. Thus, the relationship among all believers must be characterized by a devoted concern that sacrificially seeks to promote the highest good of our brothers and sisters in Christ.
We befriend one another in trials, be careful of each other’s reputation, and deny ourselves in order to promote each other’s welfare. We are called “saints” as a called out, sanctified, consecrated and dedicated group of people set apart to serve and worship the Lord, and we do this by loving one another. We don’t devour one another and kick each other when we are down. This is a disgusting grievance against the Spirit. We don’t argue and create wars. We don’t operate in selfishness and self-preservation. We are never on the side of the enemy and accuse the brethren when we don’t like something or are offended. These are signs you may not be born again or your love has grown cold. Both are bad options.
You might just be playing the part of a Christian. Do not say you love God, but do not love His holy people. “By this it is made clear who take their nature from God and are His children and who take their nature from the devil and are his children: no one who does not practice righteousness [who does not conform to God’s will in purpose, thought, and action] is of God; neither is anyone who does not love his brother (his fellow believer in Christ).” 1 John 3:10 AMPC#RunYourRace
