Matt 14:34-36 Made Perfectly Well
I love this story for so many reasons- the going to get other people, the begging, the touching of the hem- its 3 verses with 30 sermons.
But once again- I got caught up. “made perfectly well”
It’s Jesus plus nothing. Jesus is all of it. Come to Jesus and you get it all, you have it all, you don’t need nothing at all. Because in him- you’ll be
Made perfectly well
You are Complete in Him.
Colossians 2:10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.
Because you are made complete in Jesus, that means that you only need Jesus plus nothing
Whenever you have an idea that the only way you are going to be able to make it in this life with Jesus plus something else, it isn’t going to go well for you.
Its not Jesus plus a spouse, kids, house, car, money, job, influence, etc
Its not Jesus plus a robust Bible reading plan, prayer, fasting, serving, giving plan
Nothing is wrong with any of that- but you need to begin with an understanding of the completeness and sufficiency of Christ as being the completeness that you need
Hebrews 10:14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.
This completeness is fullness and perfection for those of us in Christ who have received him
It’s why marriages fail- because of the lack of completeness that people are able to find in Christ- they come into a marriage expecting that the other person will fulfill all their wants and needs and desires- and then surprise- you find out that the other person is just as empty as you
The remedy? Completeness in Christ- and that’s only found in FULL SURRENDER
See- what these guys had was the understanding that there was no one else that could heal them- there was no one else that could save them – and so they gave their full surrender
“just to touch the hem of his garment” they got the fullness with a small touch but their faith was full surrender- “that they might” is an indication of full faith and assurance-
Touching just the hem would be enough to give them their full healing “perfectely well.
God never intended for you to not be full of Christ and then not have what you need- it wasn’t his intention- his intention, was that THROUGH Christ and IN christ that
Ephesians 3:19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
That you would be FILLED with the FULLNESS of God. FILLED
Did I ever tell you about the crumbl cookies? Ate a burrito, 2 cookies. Then 6 cookies. 6 x640 about 3800 cal plus 1500 for the burrito. All took place in about 90 minutes. Slept for 3 hours after
That’s full. I wasn’t hungry for 2 days. I was stuffed. Overflowed. Satisfied.
That’s the full I’m talking about. It’s a full that doesn’t desire anything else. You don’t look at anything else and you don’t desire anything else. You are satisfied with what you have. Didn’t even want lobster.
Part of the problem with our hearts is that we always want “plus something”
It doesn’t seem like enough to just walk to the front, say a prayer and be full.
John 1:16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.
Have you received that fullness? Have you received his grace? Grace is unmerited favor- meaning- you did nothing to deserve it but he gave it all to you anyway. But you have to receive it. You have to walk in it-
You have to realize that you don’t need anything else or anyone else.
You are completely forgiven
Understanding Christ’s full forgiveness is important to living a robust Christian life because you don’t live in fear. You don’t live in doubt, or shame or guilt or anything else.
“made perfectly well” means that when you come to Jesus- you are fully forgiven- now- not in this story does it aptly describe this truth- but for us- we know- when we come to Jesus- we are completely forgiven. We are made totally well in our relationship with him.
Knowing understanding and walking in the fullness of Christs forgiveness is wonderful.
1 Peter 3:22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.
Hebrews 5:9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,
This means- that in Jesus- is our full salvation. Not through baptism, not through works, not through service or tithing or anything else. Its Jesus plus nothing for our salvation.
1 Timothy 4:10 For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.
We believe that! That in Jesus we have fullness of salvation- we are fully forgiven from all past, present and future sins-
Let me explain- if you’re a Christian- at some point since you’ve been saved you’ve sinned.
We all have- we said something, did something, thought something, didn’t do something, now if you’re saved- you hopefully felt some sort of way about what you did- you should
When I do something wrong- the Holy Spirit checks me- in my gut, head, heart etc. Lets me know- hey- that aint right son- that’s not what I have for you-
Now in this instance you have a few options-
- Continue in sin- just squash that feeling and keep doing what you’re doing- discard it- don’t think about the scriptures that condemn you- just do you
But Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
No- we can’t do that- we can’t continue in our sin- that’s not what God wants
God doesn’t want us to sin
- Be overcome with guilt and shame
This can be debilitating if you let it take root- especially if you have desire for righteousness- to honor God and do the right thing-
It can cause health problems, attendance problems, relationship problems, it can eat at you
Because what you will tell yourself and the Devil will reinforce is that you have lost your salvation- that you are a loser, you’re too far gone, God hates you and that you’re done.
But that aint true friend-
- Confess your sin
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
God wants us to immediately confess our sins- and appropriate the forgiveness that Christ provided- its difficult to grasp- but it’s a one time salvation and an ongoing forgiveness IF we confess our sins- full forgiveness.
Psalm 32:5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah
Its all there- its right there for the taking- full ongoing forgiveness from ALL Sin
You have to walk in that completeness- you have to know that its true
Its like this- when I was first married- I didn’t believe my wife loved me even tho she married me- I don’t know why- young and immature- but it created problems because I just couldn’t believe it. It didn’t seem true to me-
Once I fully realized it- it changed our relationship because it wasn’t about what she was or wasn’t doing it was about what I believing about myself and our relationship
You can do that same thing with God-
2 Corinthians 12:9 And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Friend- his grace is sufficient for you. He’s got more than enough for you and me.
You have complete power in Him
There is so much that I love about being Christian. I love the forgiveness, I love the fellowship of the Saints. But what I think I love the most is the exceeding power. I mean it.
Full power is a promise to the believer in Jesus Christ-
And in a world where it seems like we have no power- Christ provides THE power to overcome any and all problems, issues and situations that we may find ourselves.
We are “in this world but not of this world” “greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world”
Now- when Jesus came the first time- it was at the most opportune time- Rome was in power, there was a stark disparity within classes of people- and the message of Jesus resonated with the people that heard it
Turn from Sin and turn towards God- was transformative but the message of power over the political structures of the day? Revolutionary-
The message of the Kingdom of God removed Christians from the Kingdom of this world and placed them in a heavenly kingdom- a kingdom that would not pass away or fade.
And those who embraced this kingdom would experience righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit that would far exceed the power of Rome or any other Government.
Ephesians 1:19-21 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
There’s so much in that verse
This power- which Christ has bestowed upon us who believe is a power over all manner of sin but also all manner of worldliness that surrounds us and would
And THAT’S why Governments hate Christianity- because Christians bow to a different ruler and a different King. We live by a different set of rules. We might be here- but we’re not of here.
Bosnia- going out on the town- carrying M16 with 210 rds. It makes you feel a little bit separated from the group- you don’t feel as vulnerable. You don’t feel as they have the power.
2 Peter 1:3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,
Here’s what happens- you’re in a social, political or vocational situation. Feels as tho things aren’t going your way.
Thinking to self “waitaminnit- I am not of this world. I have power in this situation. This world is not my home”
Its funny- once you realize that this world is not your home- you have such a different feeling about it- Bosnia was not my home- I cared while I was there- but I’ve never been back and have no intention of going back. I was sent there for a limited time for a purpose but its not my HOME.
1 Corinthians 1:20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
We are seeing more and more this façade of power being ripped away before our eyes. This idea that somehow we can control everything and stop every bad thing and live forever is a lie
And once you embrace that- you will have so much power over this world. You wont care as much
This POWER this Completeness- made perfectly well in Christ
Power over sin- We can overcome sin- we can change our desires. We can be different
Power over anger- We can have the peace that passes all understanding
Power over stupidity- we can gain the wisdom of God instead of the wisdom of man
Power over our emotions- we don’t have to be ruled by our flesh
Yes- you can have a family, and job and those things- but it ceases to be what your life is about because you’re focused on pleasing HIM- you’re finding your completeness in HIM
You are filled with him, forgiven by him, and the power that you have in him is the recognition that because you are of HIM you are not of THEM.
Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
That’s our power- That’s our focus- The heavenly realms that we so eagerly await- to be with him and away from this place- living for eternity with him where there are no more tears and no more sickness and death.
