Make light of it

  • Matthew 22:1-14 Make light of it. Our wedding- girl from HS- don’t care- this is dif-King is God, Jesus is his son, Marriage is the marriage supper of the lamb- The church is the bridegroom.
  • Sends out his prophets and people to go and bring people to the wedding. People ‘made light of it’. Treated his servants bad. So God sends out his armies, destroys them and their stuff. Tells his servants, the people who rejected get nothing. Go and find whoever to come to the wedding. The hall is full. The king finds a man who did not have on the right garment- so he kicks him out of the wedding. Many are invited, but only a few are chosen. (I’m going to bounce around today)
  1. First thing I want to focus on in the parable- They made light of it.
  • 3 and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come. 4 Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.”
  • God did and does everything that he can to get people to come to the wedding that he has arranged- He sent his prophets in the OT and NT. He gave us the scriptures and the apostles and the disciples- Today he still uses the Church and her people to draw people to the wedding.
  • “all things are ready-come to the wedding” he says. In v 4
  • Phil 4:19  And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
  • That’s written to the Philippian church by Paul as an encouragement to them that God supplies
  • God prepares the dinner for the wedding feast because he is the one hosting the party!
  • Colossians 2:19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.
  • All of the increase comes from the Lord- in this wedding parable and in this Church. Its HIM
  • Now this scripture specifically speaks to the Nation of Israel-  like in last weeks parable that the prophets of Old had come to speak the truth about the arrival of the savior and they rejected him. Jesus is driving the point home again
  • But the same applies to us today, in that we are to continue to announce the arrival of Jesus!
  • “tell those who are invited” the King says tell them to come to my wedding!
  • 2 Corinthians 5:20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.
  • Mark 16:15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
  • We are to go and preach the Gospel of Repentance to all creation- they are invited!
  • Have you ever thrown a party where no one showed up? Its demoralizing. You send out the invites, you buy the food, you call and remind and invite and people don’t show up
  • You got to compel them! Making a facebook event isn’t enough. You coming? Call them!
  • But here’s the sad part of the parable and a sad part of this story
  • 5 But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business.
  • So many people hear about the wedding feast and they just go back to their life.
  • It’s the human condition! The cares of this life seem like they are more important than the things of God. People make light of the things of God- See no value in them-
  • “they made light of it” I’m sure you’ve had those interactions with people- dismissive and unemotional about your pleas for repentance- ‘maybe another time in my life’
  • The truth is that many times the Gospel or any other Bible truth comes through this pulpit and people make light of it.  ‘I’ll be preaching my heart out with people falling asleep’
  • They make light of it and then linger around the church and start talking against the word of God to other people in the church trying to convince them to make light of it as well.
  • Luke says it this way in Luke 14 17-20 READ- I can’t come- I got responsibilities.
  • My business, my responsibilities, my relationships. Those are more important than God’s plans
  • Matthew 24:38-39 READ As it were in the days of Noah-
  • Too many people ‘make light’ about the things of God. It’s not right.
  • Making light of something that is of the utmost importance can cost you dearly
  • Big hurricane just hit Florida. I don’t know why people keep rebuilding- but I saw this story of a guy who’s house made it through when no else did- He over engineered. Simpson ties on everything that could take one. Reinforced windows and doors. Prepared.
  • Code is for 120 mph he built to 250. Pilings 40 ft down. Steel cables. Concrete walls.
  • It was double the cost to build but the only house on the beach that made it. SHOW PICTURE
  • This man said- “We went above and beyond code, and we asked the question: ‘What would survive the big one?’ And we consistently tried to build it for that.” (notice house behind)
  • Your spiritual life is the big one- Are you planning effectively for it? What are you building on?
  • Are you making light of it? Its why I disciplined young- train them to obey without question.
  • Don’t make light of it! You’re invited to the marriage- come to it! Be prepared for it!
  • There is nothing more important than your relationship with Jesus- Nothing.
  • I was thinking this week about Church attendance. Its so vitally important.
  • People minimize it- Think its about nickels and noses. Its NOT. We tell you NOT to give!
  • God does HUGE things in the assembly of the saints. Breakthroughs happen and lives are changed! You get something and THEY get something. God is WORSHIPPED.
  • Do not forsake the gathering of the brethren. Don’t. Don’t make light of it.
  • Don’t make light of worship, and the word, and giving, and fellowship, and cutting the sin out.
  • Hear the parable- those who made light of it? 7 But when the king heard about it, he was furious. And he sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.
  1. Don’t make light of it- The church is the Bride of Christ
  • There’s a ton in this scripture- v2 The whole plan of salvation is being wrought out by God himself. 2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son,
  • God is doing what he is doing in the Church for his son- That we may be the bride of Christ and go to heaven and worship Jesus for all eternity. – Don’t make light of the Church!
  • What is God doing on this Earth? Creating a Church to come to heaven and worship Jesus
  • But don’t worry- you can be a Christian and not be part of a Church. -Too many make light of it
  • I keep bringing this up because it keeps coming up in Scripture! There’s no escaping this truth of the importance of Church in regards to your salvation and what you do with it.
  • Whatever you may have been taught or heard on some podcast that takes some obscure scripture out of context to justify personal individualistic salvation apart from the church is plain heresy. Change you mind and line it up with the word of God and quit arguing with the author of Scripture.
  • My marriage is my most important earthly relationship. It takes the bulk of my money, time and energy. It has first priority in my decision making. Everything else comes a distant second.
  • When Jesus speaks in parables- its to illustrate a point, but its never without meaning-
  • So if the meaning of Jesus is that the parable is indirect regards to the imagery of marriage how then should we live our lives? Should we make light of it? Or take it seriously?
  • The scripture says that a king arranged a marriage for his son and it is in direct reference to God arranging a marriage for his church. Look at the imagery of the scriptures in regards to marriage
  • A king arranged a marriage for his son- 2 Corinthians 11:2 For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
  • does that look like a scripture that has to do directly with marriage yes yes it does
  • Hosea 2:19-20 “I will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me In righteousness and justice, In lovingkindness and mercy; 20 I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness, And you shall know the Lord.
  • just another scripture that has to do with marriage. Here’s another one
  • Isaiah 54:5 For your Maker is your husband, The Lord of hosts is His name; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; He is called the God of the whole earth.
  • the imagery of ephesians is very clear as well because God wants you to understand how important it is to have imagery of marriage in regards to the church at the forefront of your mind.
  • Ephesians 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
  • Ephesians 5:32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
  • So as we walk through scripture we see the imagery of God being married to his people in the OT and NT and then the culmination of it is in Revelation
  • Rev 19:7-8 Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” 8 And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.
  • Knowing, understanding and believing this, how then should you view the Church and your relationship with her?
  • Well, I don’t think we should make light of it. It should be taken seriously with love and respect
  • I played sports all through high school. All 4 years. I wasn’t good, but I was committed. Finally was  a starter as a senior. Finally started winning. Some quit. They took it lightly.
  1. Get in the right garment
  • 11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment.
  • This issue of the man in the wedding garment is paramount in this parable-
  • The king shows up, after he sent his servants to go and persuade as many as they could to come to the wedding and he finds a man at the wedding that is in the wrong garment.
  • Forunner commentary- The custom in those days was for the one hosting the wedding feast—in this case, the king—to provide garments for the wedding guests. These wedding garments were simple, nondescript robes that all attendees wore. In this way, rank or station was covered, so everyone at the feast could mingle as equals.
  • These wedding feasts would last about a week and they would be very drawn out events.
  • So that this one guy is found among all the guests in the wrong attire- doesn’t sit well with the king. The king did not take it lightly that he was in the wrong attire- “ill make an exception”
  • I’m constantly reminding you of this because I want you to not ‘make light’ of who God is.
  • The king (God) calls out a guest (One of us) and says ‘how did you get in here without it’
  • The guy is speechless- says nothing- no response- he knows he’s caught and he’s wrong
  • 13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’- Doesn’t sound very light
  • You must have the right garment to be allowed to come into the feast. You MUST
  • Most people say this garment is Revelation 19:8 And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.
  • These righteous acts of the saints are visible outward sign of a inward faith that has become outward. What the saints were clothed in was important to God.
  • This is a theme all throughout scripture and revelation- an inward faith and manifests outward
  • Rev 2:26…he who overcomes (inward faith) and he who keeps my deeds until the end (outward faith)…Rev 3:3…remember what you have received and heard (inward faith); and keep it and repent (outward faith)…Rev 3:8…you have kept my word (inward faith), and have not denied my name (outward faith)…Rev 6:9..those who had been slain because of the word of God (inward faith), and because of the testimony which they maintained (outward faith)…Rev 12:11…they overcame him because of the blood of the lamb (inward faith) and because of the word of their testimony (inward faith), and they did not love their life when faced with death (outward faith)…
  • Your outward garment is a garment given to you by God for him (Its his wedding feast) and you must put on Christ Romans 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.- We must not take it lightly what God has called us to.
  • How do we put on the Lord Jesus Christ-
  • Colossians 3:10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,
  • Knowledge only increases with study of the word and the nature of God- you have to be transformed by the renewing of your mind- you have to learn to THINK differently and have bible knowledge to line your life up with the word of God- YOU do the work- read/listen
  • Ephesians 4:24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
  • Righteousness only comes from Christ imputing his righteousness in us by faith- the rest is filthy rags- the only garment we can put on is the garment of Christ and HIS righteousness-
  • That is in INWARD belief but it will manifest EXTERNALLY if you truly put it on
  • We must abstain from fleshly lusts- we must not take them lightly- Preacher- “jezebel”
  • 1 peter 2:11 Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul,
  • And people think its always sexual when you say fleshly lusts, but its not. Gossip, slander, anger, strife, envy, jealously, outbursts of wrath- those are lusts. I desire to hurt people in my flesh.
  • Gal 5:16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
  • You end up putting on loyalty instead of unfaithfulness, truth instead of ignorance, Christ’s righteousness instead of self righteousness, a garment of obedience instead of rebellion, a garment of respect instead of contempt.
  • You have been invited to the wedding feast. Put on the right garment. Don’t get kicked out. Don’t take it lightly.
