DOCTRINE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT PART 7Spiritual gifts for believers. The charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit, “But to each one is given the manifestation of the [Holy] Spirit [the evidence, the spiritual illumination of the Spirit] for good and profit.” 1 Corinthians 12:7 AMPCThe charismatic spiritual gifts in 1 Cor 12-14 are supernatural manifestations of the Holy Spirit given to and through believers. These manifestations are intended for the building up and sanctification of the church, not your own personal use (besides the gift of tongues as a personal prayer language).
These gifts are not the same as the gifts and ministries mentioned in Romans 12:6-8, whereby a believer receives the power and ability to minister in a more permanent manner in the church, “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.” and the ministerial gifts in Eph 4:11, “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,”
The manifestations of the Spirit are given according to the Spirit’s will and the believer’s desire for gifts. We are to ask, seek and knock in desire of these charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is God’s will that we ask for these supernatural manifestations within our church body, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”” Luke 11:13 ESVThese are beautiful and holy, even if you do not understand.
It is unscriptural and unwise to assume that because someone exercises a spectacular gift, that person is “more spiritual” than one who characteristically operates in less spectacular gifts. Furthermore, possessing a gift does not mean that God approves of all a person does or teaches. Spiritual gifts must not be confused with the fruit of the Spirit, which relates more directly to Christian character and sanctification.
These gifts are to be in operation within the church body, “What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.” 1 Cor 14:26 Hebrews tells us, “do not forsake the gathering of the brethren”. When you add “the” in the Greek it changes the definition of the word. There’s a difference between “faith” and “the faith”, and there’s a difference between “gathering” and “the gathering”. “The gathering” is spoken of in contrast to the synagogue, hence the place of public worship. “Where two or three are gathered” is not a Scripture of “the gathering”, but rather about judging a brother in Christ. When two or three come together to pronounce a judgment, Jesus is there judging with them. This is OT law, “in the mouth of two or three witnesses”.
By the end of the first century, the church began to take its form and had public places of worship, many “underground” including catacombs, the places of burial. This new “online church” is only meant to be a temporary thing. If you miss a service here or there, you can stay connected with the body. But if you continue to isolate and watch online, you cannot be a part of these charismatic gifts. For that matter, you are not under the ministerial gifting and authority.
Individual Christianity is godless Christianity. It is out of order and without authority. Authority is of God and he who operates outside God’s authority, is out of God’s will and protection. The Lord gave me a vision of online church. Imagine watching Martha Stewart make a Thanksgiving meal. You can watch her make the beautiful and tasty food and receive instruction in cooking, but you cannot partake at her table.
This is what the Lord showed me: you can watch and receive instruction, but you cannot partake of the Spirit’s gifts. You cannot partake of communion. You cannot partake of corporate worship. You are a viewer, not a partaker. Eventually, your muscles will atrophy and you will dry out and die spiritually.
I will discuss the charismatic gifts in the next daily. These include: a message of wisdom (distinguished between the wisdom of God for daily living), a message of knowledge, supernatural faith (differs from saving faith), gifts of healing, miraculous powers, prophecy (distinguished between a gift of prophecy and the ministry gift of a prophet), distinguishing between spirits, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues. God bless your day dear saint!#runyourrace
