Set Me Free

Romans 8:5-17 Set me free
In this chapter Paul is showing a contract between what it means to live in the Spirit vs to live in the flesh
Paul speaks a lot about the flesh
The number of times that he repeats this shows that it’s something that was affecting the Church then, and honestly, that same message is very fitting for today
Vs.5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds of the things of the flesh
Vs. 6 Now the mind of the flesh is death
Vs.7 The mind of the flesh is hostile towards God
Vs 8 Those, who are in the flesh, caters to the sinful appetites and cannot please God
Vs 9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit
Vs 12 We have an obligation, but not to our flesh
Today, everywhere we look, there is something that makes us feel better about our self, self-love, best life now, wokeness, me, me, me, alternative realities
And these things (some) are not bad, the issue is the Source of our hope
Paul is speaking of a life, the kind of life that is complete in Jesus Christ
That the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set us free from the law of Sin and death (Romans 8:2)
Life that gives us freedom, not to do as the flesh desires, but life that is led by the Spirit
Paul does speak of the benefits of living in the Spirit
Vs 5, those that live according to the Spirit, set their minds on the things of the Spirit – His will and purpose
Vs.9 The Spirit of God lives in you
Vs 10 If Christ lives in you, though your natural body is dead, Christ has made you alive
Vs 13 If you live by the power of the Holy Spirit you are putting to death the sinful deeds of the body and you will live forever
Vs.15 You have received the Spirit of as son and daughter of God
Living the Bible way to get Bible results
We are in perfect place and time to hear these words – Look at our world today
There at two kinds of people in the room or online tonight
Those who are not Christians and this whole flesh vs Spirit thing is a mystery. You only have one required response – Give your life to Christ – at any time between now and the end there will be an opportunity
Don’t tune out because if you pay attention, it’s like getting answers today for a test that you will take tomorrow
What is being led by the flesh mean:
When we reference someone that is living for the flesh, we simply mean a person that lives according to one’s desires. A pure, perhaps instinctive impulse, without regard to the morality of such a desire or desires
What is being led by the Spirit mean:
Knowing God, Acknowledging God, Knowing His Word, Receiving Jesus, allowing Him to guide you, listening to the Holy Spirit
The other person in the room; A Christian, born again, yet struggling with the flesh…in small areas or big areas. Everyone does:
My attempt today is to explore and expose some of the reason why even though we know Christ, we are still struggling
This new season, we need to fight, fight, fight to be led by the Spirit and that only comes when we fight, fight, fight to be in the presence of God
Our thoughts
Proverbs 23:7 – For as he thinks in his heart, so is he
Slave
Free
These are an indication of our heart’s matters
Edward – https://bible.org/illustration/prisoner-his-appetite
We must open the door, we have control
Do what it takes, take those small steps to get out
What we do with our thoughts either allow us to live a lie or know the truth
Those that live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh. So is who lives in the Spirit live according to the Spirit – They have a life
Mind that is set on the flesh is hostile towards God
Romans 8:7(Nlt) – For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.
The flesh battles against God because it does not want to be crucified and surrendered to the Lord Jesus Christ. It does not want to live our Galatians 5:24 – Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.
Mind that is set the Spirit is life and peace
You will not please God if you live by the flesh
Romans 8:6(Nlt) So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace – Peace (the Spiritual well-being that comes from walking with God, now and forever

Our Choices
Dead was our default stance
Then Jesus came and gave us a choice of life
Romans 5:8 – But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
That same Spirit lives in you – that battery power in in you and the minute you unplug, you start to die
Hebrews 12:1-3 – Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the [a]author and [b]finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
This is our mere obligation…to keep moving/growing our Faith..trusting and drawing closer to God
Fasting, praying …reading the Word of God, being in relationship with other Bible believing Christians
I tell my girls all the time – You keep moving, you live …you stop moving you die
Put to death our sinful nature – That’s the start – And its a continuous daily exercise
Romans 8:12(Nlt) Therefore, dear brothers and sisters,[a] you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do– We have no obligation to live according to the impulses of the flesh
If we do, it’s a choice
Let’s not be deceived that the flesh offers life, honestly it only offers death

Our Action Plan
The action is simple, you and I are children of God, lets live like we are
I don’t need to convince you that you are a child of God and acting like you are not is an option
Romans 8:16 (Nlt) For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children
Some of you have been lied to by the enemy for so long that its hard to accept your new identity in Christ
Stay planted in a Church with other believers
And if we are Children of God, then we are family.
We share Glory, we share suffering – That what Family does
When things are good in the family, we get extra serving of ice cream, when they are not so good, we understand – But we don’t quit being family
Ask God to search you thoroughly.
Psalms 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
Mark 11:12 Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. 13 And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 In response Jesus said to it, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again. “And His disciples heard it.
This should be our prayer, that God will destroy anything that is looks good from the outside but truly it’s not bearing any fruits
And if we honestly ask, it will happen immediately
Mark 11:20 -20 Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. 21 And Peter, remembering, said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away.”
We don’t owe the flesh anything (don’t have to please it) – the Price was costly but it has already been paid. We are not debtors
Isaiah 53:3-7(Nkjv) Surely, he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—everyone—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.
You are not a slave, you don’t have the spirit of bondage. A dear price was paid to set you free!
Jesus went through all these, so you can be free!
Choose freedom today!
My altar call today is for you who is not fully living in the freedom you have been awarded. You who want to be set free from slavery of the mind
