The World’s Greatest Mentor
Open With Prayer
Titus 2:1-8 NKJV
2 But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: 2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— 4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.
The title of tonight’s Message is, “The World’s Greatest Mentor .”
Mentorship happens when a person uses their experience, skill, and or knowledge to train another progress.
Mentorship is commonly practiced in career development.
This often occurs between a senior and junior employee for the purpose of the mentee’s growth, learning, and to advance in their career.
Statistics show that employees being mentored for career development are promoted 5 times more often than those without mentors.
AND Mentors, the one sharing their knowledge, skills, or experience
to help the other employee progress.
They get an even greater return on their investment, statistically
Mentors are 6 times more likely to be promoted!
Mentoring in the career field is beneficial, for both the mentor and the mentee.
And it’s clearly valuable to the employers.
And for a Christian, mentorship is not just beneficial, it’s vital!
STORY: One of the most impactful mentors I’ve had is My mother in law.

Grew Up Christin Home/ Saw biblical Marriage
Things were rocky at first, as they often are.
And, I struggled in the area of submission.
It took countless phone calls, to loving correct me when I was wrong
And also to encourage me
she didn’t always take Jeremys side, if he was wrong she let him have it
It took time spent together, and I learning by watching her exemplify Christ like character in her life and marriage.
Her mentorship helped me learn to be a submissive wife
A helpmate to my husband
I’m still not perfect, and I still consider her a mentor.
but I can say Her mentorship challenged me, corrected me, and lead me closer to the Lord, and is a big part of why Jeremy and I have a healthy marriage.
You won’t find the term Mentorship in the Bible
But, if you read it, you will find several accounts of mentorship in action.
For example Elish and Elisha (1 Kings 19:19- 2 Kings 2)
Eli preparing Samuel for the tasks and responsibilities that would become his after Eli’s death (1 Samuel 1–4).
Moses being mentored by his father-in-law Jethro,
first as son-in-law and then as a leader (Exodus 18).
Also …If you haven’t noticed the main verse we opened with is talking about mentorship within the church. (Titus 2:1-8)
These are just a few examples
Throughout scripture there are Leader’s training their successors, people being taught by a wiser person, more experienced & knowledgeable in the ways of the Lord.
The greatest mentor of all time, to ever walk the earth, in the flesh
Is God incarnate, Jesus Christ
Above any other person, He is our greatest example.
Jesus mentored His disciples, and we are to do the same.
Matthew 28:19-20
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Discipleship is leading them to Christ, to be baptized, and teaching them to obey the Lord should come first before mentoring in other areas.
When discipling others, we ourselves must daily strive to replicate
Christ’s life, in our own lives
displaying His characteristics, His values,
living out His teachings, daily crucifying our flesh
With a heart that desires to please the Lord
So that we may teach others to do the same.
If your seeking discipleship,
It’s important to for you to be taught by mature Christians,
even if your using “3D Discipleship”
If you haven’t heard of “3D Discipleship” it’s a great resource for discipleship
You can find on our website or through the link in my sermon notes
There are so many areas of ministry and especially in our personal lives,
where it’s important for us to receive mentorship to help us mature as Christians.
However, Discipleship should be the foundation of all mentoring relationships within the church.
I obviously can’t cover every area or we wouldn’t get out of here for hours
However, I will share one more form of mentorship that is vital for the Church
Let’s look back at Titus 2:2-6 NKJV
If we want to maintain a healthy Church,
We must also mentor the future generation!
If we don’t, our church could either become severely crippled
or worse dead..
Older Men, you also are to lead by example!
Be sober (vigilant), reverent, temperate (having self-control),
Be sound in faith, in love, and in patience.
Mentor the younger men!
Be an example to them in your own conduct
Teach them to them to honor the Lord, how to lead their households
to love their wives, and to raise their own children to love the Lord.
Older Women, we are to be reverent in our behavior, not slanderers,
not given to much wine, and to teach good things
So that through our own conduct and instruction we can mentor the younger women to also love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, and obedient to their own husbands.
Now, It’s not a requirement to be older than someone to mentor them.
This may shock some people, but did you know that sometimes younger people can have more knowledge and wisdom in areas of their life
Take Faith for example, She could probably mentor a lot of people older than Her
However, there are some qualifications we should have to be a mentor.
Before you can teach others, you need to be well-established in the faith.
And a life that displays Christian Character
Have good measure of biblical knowledge
More knowledge than the mentee
You must also be willing to invest the time
Now not everyone is ready to be a mentor and that’s okay
You can be mentored.
For mentorship to be successful mentee must invest their time and be teachable
You need to do what your mentor is telling you.
If your not going to do the work you will not only waist your time,
but your mentors time.
Successful mentees also replicate what their mentor does.
When Ryan made the decision to allow Pastor Jeremy to mentor Him.
He not only did everything he was told to do,
he Also replicated Pastor Jeremy.
Even replicating things that He would say
Anytime Jeremy hears or sees something wrong he says, (That ain’t Right)
He even said it today, Jayda over packed the trash can overflowing it rather than taking it out. Jeremy saw it and said “That ain’t right”
Because Jeremy used that phrase often, Ryan does also
And now Ryan’s youth also say, “That ain’t Right”
It’s also important to be honest with your mentors
It doesn’t matter how bad or how embarrassing you think it is
the person mentoring you needs to know the things you struggle with
so they can determine a correct way to get you to where you need to be
A good example of successful mentor ship is Elijah and Elisha
For those who may not know about Elijah
He is a prophet that God sent to show Israel the evil of their ways
And to turn the nation back to God.
In 1 Kings 19:19 We are told that
When Elijah saw his future student and throws his mantle on him.
Elisha bids farewell to his parents, slaughters his oxen and burns his plow.
And then follows Elijah for years, watching the work that Elijah was doing
And learning from him.
2 Kings 2:5-14 New King James Version (NKJV)
5 Now the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho came to Elisha and
said to him, “Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from
over you today?”
So he answered, “Yes, I know; keep silent!”
6 Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here, please, for the LORD has sent me on to
the Jordan.”
But he said, “As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!”
So the two of them went on. 7 And fifty men of the sons of the prophets
went and stood facing them at a distance, while the two of them stood by
the Jordan. 8 Now Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up, and struck the water;
and it was divided this way and that, so that the two of them crossed over
on dry ground.
9 And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha,
“Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?”
Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.”
10 So he said, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see
me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not
be so.” 11 Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that
suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the
two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, “My father, my father, the chariot of
Israel and its horsemen!” So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his
own clothes and tore them into two pieces. 13 He also took up the mantle of
Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood by the bank of the
Jordan. 14 Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and
struck the water, and said, “Where is the LORD God of Elijah?” And when he
also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha
crossed over.
Elisha imitated Elijah, He didn’t try to make another way.
He saw what worked from someone more experienced and did it that way
It is important that you listen to what your mentor says and does
As Christians it’s wise for us to have mature Christians mentor us help us grow Spiritually so that we can honor God in all areas of our lives!
Proverbs 27:17 New King James Version (NKJV)
17 As iron sharpens iron,
So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
