Then the LORD said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.”
Genesis 8:21
This declaration of the Lord reminds us that it is solely because of who He is that we are not destroyed. It was despite our continual evil that He vowed to never again destroy all living creatures, it is through His mercy that we are spared each day. “Through the LORD’S mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not” (Lam. 3:22). Pride will tell you that you are a good person, pride will deceive you into believing that you are deserving of any good thing because of who you are, but pride is a liar and a thief. How often I hear people say, ‘I’m a good person, I’ve done nothing wrong!” How wrong you are! Is anyone righteous apart from Jesus Christ, is anyone deserving of good beside Him? Are we deserving of anything but punishment apart from Christ who dwells with us?
It is not because of your good works but His good Spirit that you gain anything at all. If not for the Lord’s mercies, we would all be consumed because of the wickedness that consumes our hearts each day. If one small spot of our being is stained with evil, then all of us is evil, just as one leprous spot makes the whole person a leper. Do you struggle with pride? Then stand in the presence of the Lord, because only then do you see how weak and fragile, how wicked and useless we are without Him. Once humility comes, understanding of the enormity of His mercy towards you will follow, the magnitude of what Christ accomplished on the cross will be comprehended, and the powerful gift of forgiveness through Christ that covers all our sin can be received.
