You Want To Be Mighty

  • You Want to Be Mighty! 2 sam 23:8-39
  • We’re coming to the end of our travels through 1-2 Samuel, and here we find a list of David’s mighty men.  There are 4 that are listed as most mighty, and then we get the list of 30
  • To make the 30 is great, but to be listed as the mightiest, is a great accomplishment
  • In the Christian life, we want to work towards holiness and rewards in heaven
  • God cares about how we live our lives, and we should have a mindset- that says- “I want to be known as mighty” We should want our lives to matter- We should want to live a life pleasing to God- And no one may notice, but God- and that’s ok- That our name is written in the book of life
  • The Mighty are miraculous
  • The first mighty man listed is-Josheb- Killed 800 men at one time v 8
  • Now Josheb- Adino the enzite- the description of this act mirrors 1 Chron 11- mighty man
  • The act is- he kills 800 men at one time. Now, I’m not sure if you know how battle works- but this is quite the accomplishment
  • We’re not going to get into the morality of this act- as much as we can all agree- it would be next to impossible to kill 800 people at once without a bomb- it would be a miracle
  • God was with Israel- He was a God of war- moving Israel forward- It took war and this was a miracle- and that’s a point I want to you get in your spirit- the mighty are miraculous
  • We sometimes drift away from the miraculous- we don’t desire it- but it changes things
  • Exodus 14:31Thus Israel saw the great work which the Lord had done in Egypt; so the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord and His servant Moses.
  • What miracles do- is make people take notice of God- when you can testify of a miracle- inevitably- it draws people into wonder of who is God and what is he able to do
  • Acts 14:3Therefore they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, who was bearing witness to the word of His grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.
  • This is all through the book of Acts- Acts 28:8 Acts 3:6 Acts 4:30 Acts 3:16
  • These miracles of the Old and new testament were never meant to bring US glory but GOD
  • Miracles only for us are not the Goal- its to draw people to HIM
  • What does it mean to you
  • Are you walking in the miraculous? Do you even think about it or ask God for it?
  • Perhaps your life isn’t mighty because you aren’t asking God to move miraculously
  • 1 Corinthians 12:10-12 It’s a promise of Scripture! We can walk in it TODAY
  • Just few weeks ago- Ps John- Covid and Stroke- Talk this week- Almost normal. Should have died
  • John 14:1212 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
  • I’m just smart enough to believe that- There are 800 man armies that are and will come against you- and you need to believe and pray for the miraculous- for God to move through you
  • And that takes COURAGE- You got to have some pluck-grit- whatever- let God move through you2
  • When God moves- it will bring HIM glory and draw people to HIM
  • 2 Ti1:6says to  to stir up the gift of God which is in you ARE YOU STIRRING IT UP?
  • Matthew 17:20Mark 16:17Romans 15:19

The mighty are fighters

  • Eleazar- Defied the philistines, attacked until his had was weary and stuck to the sword v10
  • Now that’s a fighter! Fighting so hard that his hand stuck to the sword- now I’ve never fought with a sword- but I’ve held onto something- sledge hammer- waterski- pull up- you can hold it for so long- or so hard that you actually have to pry your fingers off the handle-
  • That’s the picture here- a man who fought so hard for David his hand stuck to his sword
  • Zechariah 10:5They shall be like mighty men, Who tread down their enemies In the mire of the streets in the battle. They shall fight because the Lord is with them, And the riders on horses shall be put to shame.
  • Fighting is an ethos of the Christian walk- it is.
  • 1 Timothy 6:1212 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
  • 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 READ but we don’t fight as the world fights
  • 1 Timothy 1:18  says wage the good warfare,
  • 2 Timothy 4:7  I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
  • What does it mean to you
  • Are you fighting the good fight of faith, or are you just letting the Devil win every day
  • Its an all day no days off endeavor to fight this fight of faith- and it is worth it
  • We don’t fight like the world fights- the Bible says that- Just because you can- doesn’t mean you should
  • Hebrews 3:14  For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end,
  • We want to be partakers- but we must HOLD to the END- and we lose it if we engage in worldly warfare as the world does it- we have to fight on our knees- in the spiritual realm- walking in the love of Christ and not in the anger of the world- there is nothing Good there- Not easy- but its what we are supposed to do- God is watching- and so are others- We have to watch it.
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:8-9But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
  • We want salvation and its not found through wrath- we fight- “The art of fighting without fighting” And we bring God the glory through it.

The mighty are defenders

  • Shammah stationed himself in the middle, and defended it v 12
  • This one right here gets me in the heart- Surrounded- but standing in the middle defending
  • I’ll be honest- sometimes I feel like giving up- its hard fighting- Its hard defending the faith
  • But I will tell you- its necessary and it is worth it.  This guy is listed as a mighty man because he defended- Not because he gave up the fight and let he enemy take it over- Nope. DEFENDED
  • There are- and will continue to be things that are worth defending- things that must be protected- Gospel, Church, family, truth, Bible, etc. All worth defending- but takes defenders
  • Proverbs 25:2626 A righteous man who falters before the wicked Is like a murky spring and a polluted well.
  • I don’t want to falter before the wicked- I don’t want to throw up my hands and give up
  • Who we are and what we do is worth defending- It’s worth is- if not us, who?
  • 1 Peter 3:15 says always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;Colossians 4:6Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
  • What does it mean to you
  • Are you defending the faith? Do you think and believe that its worth defending?
  • And I’m not talking about arguing with people over the internet- not worth it
  • We defend our faith when we live out our faith. When we work, live and vote and pray
  • Through the laws we pass, the things we allow- when we speak up in love- Defend
  • 2 Timothy 2:25-26in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
  • There will be times when you know that he Lord is asking you to step up and defend- do it.
  • God will go with you- he will help you speak he will direct what you should do so you do it.
  • Luke 21:14-1514 Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will [a]answer; 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or [b]resist.
  • Titus 1:9 says by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.
  • 2 Thessalonians 2:1515 Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our [a]epistle.
  • What we have- who we are is worth being defended. Its worth fighting for- we must defend it

Here’s the last thing-

The Mighty have a good name

  • Here we go again- here he is- wait for it- Abishai- lifted his spear against 300, killed them- and won a name v18 I really think that Abishai isn’t a well enough known name- I got to say before going through these last couple years he wasn’t a name I thought of- but now I do- Abishai
  • It’s a powerful name- and one that is and should be remembered- Proverbs 22:1 good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold.
  • A good name is great- get a bad name and it will stick with you forever. Stinky Stanley
Proverbs 10:7 The memory of the righteous is blessed, But the name of the wicked will rot.
  • These memories of the people of our faith- the Hebrews 11 people are remembered- MIGHTY
  • Ecclesiastes 7:1 says A good name is better than precious ointment
  • What does it mean to you
  • Do you even care what people say about you? You should. Not by changing your faith- or not standing up for Jesus- but by how you live- People might say things- but let them say it- They may not like you- but they can’t say anything destructive about you-
  • Philippians 2:22 But you know his proven character
  • 2 Co 8:21 providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.
  • That’s how we want to live- we want to live honorable before God and men-
  • Romans 14:16  Therefore do not let your good be spoken of as evil;
  • Romans 12:17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have[a] regard for good things in the sight of all men.
  • Don’t live for others- but live wanting a good name.
