FASHION HAS A REPEATING CYCLE. Fashion will repeat itself every 20-30 years or so. Bell bottoms so fashionable in the 70’s are in style now. The jackets with those big shoulder pads, I just saw the other day in a clothing store. But I’m wondering if today’s fashion will come around 20 years from now? What would they even call this generation’s fashion trend? The decade of the prostitute? I’m not trying to be mean or hurtful; but this generation is wearing the smallest and tightest clothing I’ve ever seen. It’s more about how much you can show then how much you can cover. Now, I expect the world to act like the world and follow the world’s trends. But why are there people calling themselves Christians wearing such provocative clothing and allowing their children to dress the same? Its not cute. It’s not beautiful. It’s shameful.
I saw a picture of a prostitute from the early 1930’s and she was wearing more clothing than most Christian women these days. I don’t understand. Please explain to me parents how you can allow your daughter to go out in public looking like a prostitute? You fathers, would you ever had married your wife if she dressed like that?
No man of God would ever marry a girl who dressed a certain way. I say, “no man of God” because a certain type of man will go after a girl dressed provocatively and be sure he’s not someone you want for your daughter. My son was elected homecoming king his sophomore year of high school and he invited a young girl to go with him. She sent him a picture of her dress to see if it matched his tux colors. Gabe showed us her dress and he said he didn’t like how revealing it was. We didn’t either. He was not going to go if she wore that dress. We convinced him to talk to her. Gabe got up the courage to ask her to pick a different dress that was modest. She did. I was very proud of my son.
Our daughters are to be protected- spirit, mind, body and soul. Parents, you are their covering and protection until you give them away in marriage. Why would you display your daughter in any other way than pure? Women, how you present yourself and parents, how you present your daughters either honors the Lord or dishonors Him. Not only that, our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Yet many dress their temple like the whore of Babylon. Clothing is important. If clothing doesn’t matter, then why don’t you just go naked?
“in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.”
I Timothy 2:9-10 NKJV
Peter says more of the same. Now, modest attire does not mean you have to dress like a puritan. You don’t have to wear turtle necks, shirts to cover your elbows and jean skirts to the floor. Some denominations have put “standards” on clothing for their people, mostly it’s put on the women. I don’t agree with this, although I can see why they do it after 20 years of women’s ministry.
Can we at least use common sense? Is it too much to ask that we wear clothing that does not reveal every curve? Can our dresses go to the knees and not just the bottom of the curve of the buttocks? Can we at least cover all our body parts? Is it really that difficult that Christian women don’t look and dress like the world? Are we not commanded to “come out of the world and be separate”? I know it’s possible to be cute and clothed.
“As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout, So is a lovely woman who lacks discretion.”
Proverbs 11:22
A beautiful woman without discretion – literally, “without taste,” is void of the subtle tact and grace, without modesty her mere outward beauty is as ill-bestowed as the nose-ring in the snout of the unclean pig. If you read your Bible, pigs are never spoken of in a positive manner. Beauty is abused by those who have no discretion or modesty with it. This is true of all bodily endowments. There is an Arab proverb: “A woman without modesty is food without salt.” Tasteless.
Scripture records the saints are dressed in fine linen, pure, holy and spotless. I also would like to point out the parable of the wedding feast found in Matthew 22 and the man who was not wearing a wedding garment was cast out. Obviously, clothing matters. Much of the OT law was dedicated to clothing and even the material of clothing. There’s a reason. Please read the following Scriptures that reference the saints in heaven.
“You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.” Revelation 3:4-5
“I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.”
Revelation 3:18
“Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads.”
Revelation 4:4
“Then a white robe was given to each of them; and it was said to them that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were, was completed.”
Revelation 6:11
“After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands,” Revelation 7:9
“Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.” Revelation 19:7-8, 14
The bride of Christ is beautiful, pure and holy. He’s not returning for a prostitute. Ladies, can we please reflect the beauty of holiness?
“Give to the Lord the glory due His name; Bring an offering, and come into His courts.
Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness! Tremble before Him, all the earth.”
Psalms 96:8-9
