Watch Jesus Move Matt 8:1-17
- 2 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
- There’s a few parts of this story that I find interesting- One- there were mutitudes following him, but only one came out of the crowd to be healed and he worshipped him
- Now if you don’t know anything about leprosy- this was a debilitating condition. It would create open sores, scabs and lesions on a person. They would bleed and be filled with pus. They might lose hands, fingers or feet and then only get around by crawling. A complete outcast
- In bible times- it was thought to be highly contagious- so many people avoided these types and because of the lack of healthcare- the priests were the one who determined if the person who had or was exposed to leprosy was able to be be in society or if they needed to be quarantined.
- You have to put yourself in this mans situation- an outcast- labeled -quarantined- unable to take part in society- and he comes out the crowd- and Goes to Jesus and says “If you are willing”
- This was a man of faith. A man who was surrounded by other people, but had a need and humbled himself and put himself before the one he knew could heal him
- How many relationships were broken. How many people distanced themselves from him
- But he goes “If you you are willing” if you can do it. I want to be healed.
- Now I don’t know anything about this guy. If he was Jew or a gentile. I don’t know. But the word of God was there during that time. Maybe he went to synagogue. Maybe he had faith
- Maybe Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.
- Jeremiah 33:6 Behold, I will bring it health and healing; I will heal them and reveal to them the abundance of peace and truth.
- Those are faith scriptures! Those are healing scriptures!
- And then Jesus tells him ‘go and show the priest’ a few reasons- 1 Jesus wanted to honor the law of God in regards to leprosy- he wasn’t anti-law he came to fulfill it- so he sends him to the priest as was required by the law. 2 He wanted the priests and religious leaders to see that this man was healed because healing was a promise of the arrival of the messiah.
- Isaiah 35:5-6 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, And the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.6 Then the lame shall leap like a deer, And the tongue of the dumb sing. For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, And streams in the desert.
- This healing is yet another proof of Jesus ability to heal the sick and his messiahship
- And why was he healed? Because Jesus can heal- and he was humble enough to ask
- He could have stayed in his condition- he could have stayed with the crowd- lived in his pain
- But he walked in humbleness and faith and believed!
- Psalm 41:3 The Lord will strengthen him on his bed of illness; You will [a]sustain him on his sickbed.
- What does it mean to you?
- What do you need Jesus to do for you in your life and what haven’t you seen happen because you refuse to leave the crowd and bow before Jesus and say “If you are willing” and see what he does!
- We live in a different time- we don’t walk around in groups and follow itinerant preachers claiming to be messiah. We know the truth- we know who Jesus is- we just lack humbleness
- Now some would say courage- but I think we’re overrun with courage- we need humbleness we need to learn how to bow the knee and go before the Lord and put it in his hands- not control it
- Proverbs 22:4 By humility and the fear of the Lord Are riches and honor and life.
- Are you humble- do you fear the lord? Do you see him as your source and healer? Or are you on your own doing it your way on your terms? God wants you to come to him and trust him
- Psalm 103:2-3 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits:3 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases,
- All of them! I believe God is a healer- I believe that he can and he will heal all disease-
- see the problem is that nowadays people don’t have to trust God for their health and healing- we just go to the medicine cabinet or the Doctor. (I am not against the doctor or medicine)
- but can you imagine for a minute that rite-aid and the urgent care clinic didn’t exist?
- How differently would you live your life? What health decisions would you make and where would you go if you had a health ailment? You’d go to prayer! You’d call out to God!
- You would be humble, down on your face begging God to do something-
- Proverbs 11:2 When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom.
- Quit being so prideful that you wont bow the knee before the Lord and then watch him move
- Quit living in pain and misery while the savior of the universe is walking by willing to heal you.
- James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
- And I don’t care what it is- physical emotional spiritual relational healing Jesus can and will do it
- But you have to bow the knee! You have to go to him- you have to humble yourself-
- I don’t know what you do- but I go to experts all the time- I don’t need to own the process- I’d rather just pay an expert or listen to an expert and have them fix it- its much easier
- Just tell me what do and I will do it.
- 1 Peter 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,
Believe in his word
Faith of belief “Just say the word”
- 8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
- So awesome here that this man is a centurion in the Roman army and he puts faith in Jesus
- Don’t know where he was in his faith- what he knew about what- but here’s what he did know-
- The words of Jesus were powerful and were able to change things so he asked him to speak
- Isaiah 55:11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me [a]void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
- That’s what God says about his word and that’s what Jesus had been doing- healing people by his word- and somehow this gentleman knew it- he knew that the simple words of Jesus would heal his daughter- and so he recognized the power of Jesus and his word and believed it
- Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.
- That’s a true scripture! God protects those who put their trust in Him and his WORD
- This soldier found himself in the same predicament as the leper- no where to turn- overwhelmed with the reality of a sick child- but put his faith in this Jesus- and his word
- And Jesus goes further and says “I have not seen such great faith in all of Israel”
- That’s a statement! That’s a powerful statement- in all of Israel- and to me- it is in part because he believed Jesus WORD
- This the Jesus that said- Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
- Who knew the OT- Deuteronomy 8:3 So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.
- God has declared, the scriptures say, and Jesus echoed- live by God’s word! Live by it!
- What does it mean to you?
- Are you living by God’s word? Are you trusting wholly in his word to redeem you and save you?
- Most of us- if not all us were saved by the word of God- a spoken or written word-
- You didn’t discover Jesus from thin air- it came from his WORD-
- 1 Peter 1:23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,
- We were born again by through HIS WORD-
- Jesus said we would be sanctified- John 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
- How is it that we go from getting saved by the word to leaving the word? How do we not continue in it? This centurion says to Jesus “say the word” and we should live by that same faith if we want to see God move! Just “say the word” Jesus- and believe in his word!
- Hebrews 4:12 READ
- Isaiah 40:8 The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”
- So do you know what that means? That means that any and all promises within the word of God are applicable and promises for you TODAY- Do you read your bible? Do you lean on his promises?
- God promises guidance, his help and guidance, his faithfulness, our salvation, wisdom, peace, joy, and love, riches in heaven, adoption into his familyy , strength and power, his provision, eternal life, deliverance (from enemies, from danger, from temptation), healing, and renewal.
- Found this link- https://outuponthewaters.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/162-promises-of-God-from-Scripture.pdf
- Go and print them out and live by those promises- when you find yourself in doubt, despair and disbelief- claim the promises of God- Take him at his word! Say to him ‘just say the word’
- Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
- Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
- They aren’t going to pass away- they are going to come true!
- This week was talking to someone- waiting- patience- God shows up that day!
Don’t worry about the past
- “She Got up”
- Now for some people- seeing this story seems a bit chauvinistic. Jesus heals a woman to get her to wait on them. I personally don’t have any problem with that interpretation btw
- But here’s the part of it that I absolutely love- she was sick, she got healed, she got up
- She just got up. She didn’t complain about where she used to be. She didn’t complain about the pain she used to be in. She didn’t use it as an excuse to keep her from doing something
- Some people do this- I used to be _____ or I had a _____ or I went through_____ and thehave been healed, and Jesus set them free, but they don’t do anything with it
- The Old became new and they treat it like it still is- set free but still in bondage.
- 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.
- Praise God she was set free and she wasn’t going to let her past keep her from moving forward
- Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have [a]apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,
- Forgetting that which is behind. The fever is gone. The pain is gone. The old is GONE
- What are you going to do with it? What are you going to do with your healing?
- Isaiah 43:18-19“Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old.19 Behold, I will do a new thing ,Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert.
- God had done a NEW THING in her and she let him- she got up.
- What does it mean to you?
- Have you been set free and are still living in your chains?
- Elephants big chains to small ropes- learned to stop trying- slightest resistance
- Jesus set you free so you can GET UP so you can MOVE ON. Quit living in your past!
- You were, you did, you once, in your past life etc etc. who cares—- GET UP
- 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
- Isaiah 43:25 “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins.
- Why are you sitting around thinking about your past? Why are you still living like you got a fever? Get up- Start serving Jesus- help him anyway you can- you can see him move if you GET UP
- Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who[a] do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
- Do you believe that? Or do you walk in condemnation. Do you walk in the freedom that Christ provides?
- But some of ya’ll want to stay in the past. Live with the fever instead of GETTING UP
- Luke 9:62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
- Hebrews 10:17 then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
- Philippians 3:8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ
- Hebrews 12:12 let us lay aside every weight,
- Read v 16-17
