The Lord is My Portion
The Story I’ll Tell (lyrics from song)
The hour is dark
And it’s hard to see
What you are doing here in the ruins
And where this will lead
Oh, but I know
That down through the years
I’ll look on this moment and see Your hand on it
And know You are here
And I’ll testify of the battle You’ve won,
How You were my portion
when there wasn’t enough
All that is left is highest praises
Sing Hallelujah to the Rock of Ages
This worship song has been a beautiful encouragement to me. I believe there are a few things that we can pull from these timeless lyrics.
First, if we look at the word portion in the Hebrew is cheleq. In the scriptures noted below, portion in this context is referring to a possession of God’s servants or enjoying perquisites. Perquisite is another term for perk. A perk is noted as a thing regarded as a special right or privilege enjoyed as a result of one’s position. For example, a perk of belonging to a country club with a swimming pool is that you can use the pool to swim anytime you want. Those who are not members do NOT get to enjoy this perk. So, for us, I interpret this to mean to me that because I am a Christian (because of my position) that God has granted me special privileges (perks) and given me a special possession (portion) to walk through this life. What an amazing gift from the Lord!
Next, we must embrace the seasons of our life which seem dark and difficult in order to fully comprehend the plans God has for our life. The temptation to fall back to our fleshly desires especially during times of great trials is there. These seasons, God tells, are a guarantee for the faithful saint. It is during this; God is leading us to trust Him more and that even though we fail (none of us are perfect) God is still in control. He will have the victory. Psalm 73:26 My flesh and heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Remembering God’s faithfulness will encourage your soul and bring hope. The enemy of our souls, Satan, would like us to forget all that the Lord has done for us through the years and be emotionally consumed by the chaos surrounding us. The way to fight this is through the Word of God, prayer, and worship. Remember the Lord’s hand on all things in our life and that the Lord is here in the midst of the battle with us. We are NOT alone. We can always have HOPE despite the situation.
Lamentations 3:21-24 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope; because of the Lord’s great love we are NOT consumed, for his compassions never fail, they are new every morning. “The Lord is my portion” says my soul. Therefore, I have hope in Him.
Lastly, remind yourself in the times of loneliness and in the times of insufficiency that God is literally our portion. HE ALONE IS ENOUGH. Psalm 119:57 The Lord is my portion; I have promised to keep Your words. In the psalms, David speaks to God being his portion and inheritance. No inheritance could be greater than that of a relationship with the Lord almighty. Psalm 16:5 The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and cup. Testify to the others what God has done, keep His commandments (for they are not burdensome) and praise Him! As the song lyrics express so beautifully
And I’ll testify of the battle You’ve won,
How You were my portion
when there wasn’t enough
All that is left is highest praises
Sing Hallelujah to the Rock of Ages
