- 2 Sam 7- For Himself a Name
- The main point is found in v 23 And who is like Your people, like Israel, the one nation on the earth whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make for Himself a name—and to do for Yourself great and awesome deeds for Your land—before Your people whom You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, the nations, and their gods?
- That’s really the crux of the whole story and the crux of The whole Bible and the experience of being a Christian- “to make himself a name”
- God chose Abram, to Abraham, to David to Jesus for one purpose- to make for himself a name
- HIMSELF a NAME- I call myself a Christian. I want to make HIM a name!
- What can we do to Make HIM a name?
- You have to want to honor God
- This is what David was trying to do- He had a plan- I want to build you this great hosue
- This was a great plan- why would it not be a great plan? It was for the Lord?
- “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains.”
- 3 Then Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you. 4 But it happened that night that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, 5 “Go and tell My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Would you build a house for Me to dwell in?
- David’s plan was a solid Godly plan- build a house for the Lord- Why wouldn’t make sense- IT was to honor God- It was bring glory to his name.
- It was a RESPONSE to who God was and what God had done for him- To give him a place. To HONOR HIM. David wanted to Spread the NAME of YHWH and that was honorable.
- This was always Davids heart- Psalm 27:4 One thing I have desired of the Lord, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, And to inquire in His temple.
- Psalm 69:9 Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
- Again- this is why david is called a man after Gods heart- He wasn’t about promoting himself
- You can’t simultaneously promote God and yourself at the same time. Its HIS NAME
- What does it mean to you
- Does honoring and blessing God come into your mind? Do you want to make HIM a NAME
- I was with some pastors this week- they asked me- Why do you do what you do
- For people to fully follow the Lord every day. To never forget whose they are and who they are.
- If you do that- you’ll honor him. All day every day. You’ll start your day with-
- Psalm 143: 8 Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You.
- You’ll start your day with “how can I make a name for you today”? Do something! (david did)
- The question is- who’s life is it and who are you living it for? If its for HIM you’ll honor him
- Jobs- Making pizzas, cleaning bathrooms, Army, Sales- what did you DO today- production
- 1 Cor 10:31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
- This should be our mindset all day every day. We should want to bring Glory to our God
- Its not just worship, giving and service. It’s the day in and day out. Its how we love people. Its how we serve people. And doing it for HIM- Stuff that no one knows about that’s for HIM
- And you should have a plan to do so- With your life, family, career, decisions- its for HIM
- Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
- God has a plan to make his name
- You have to realize that its HIS plan, not your plan. David had a plan to honor God by building him a house- but God had a different plan God- My Plan I want to build YOU a house- It will be better. Your son will build it-
- David may not have understood it- but it was a better plan God said no to David’s plan
- David’s heart was in right place- but God saw the plan differently- Longer range plane
- READ V 8-11 Solomon the son of David to build a temple
- READ V 12-16 Jesus to be the seed of David
- God even said “You would build a house for me?” God was surprised that David would do it
- Proverbs 16:9 A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.
- Pr 19:21 There are many plans in a man’s heart, Nevertheless the Lord’s counsel that will stand.
- David had plans in his heart- but the Lord directed the ways and the steps.
- David wanted to do the right thing- saw what he had, wanted to give God his best, But God didn’t require it of him. God knew that through HIS plan MORE people would be blessed
- Solomon would build the temple, and through Jesus Christ, the blood line of David would endure forever– It was to Make HIMSELF a name- Not David. Not Solomon. HIM
- We are of the blood line of David- This story applies to us- So much comes through this story!
- But here’s the big nugget- God didn’t support David’s plan even though it was a solid- god honoring plan- he had his own plan. And it was up to David to follow it.
- What does it mean to you
- How do you respond when God stops your plans and institutes HIS plan?
- Are you willing to shut it down and be redirected for HIS glory- or do you push your own agenda
- Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them
- We were created to for HIS plan- not our plan- its for HIS Glory alone that we do what we do
- There have been many redirects in my life- Church- wanted kent
- You have to hold on to scriptures that declare that he’s leading and guiding.
- Isaiah 58:11 The Lord will guide you continually
- When you’re walking with the Lord- you have to believe that your plans are up for discussion, he is the final say in what you will do and whether it will be accomplished or not
- Isaiah 30:21 Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left.
- Whatever his plans may be- you have to trust, if you have the Holy Spirit that he will Guide you
- John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
- You have to SUBMIT to his plan.
- David- I accept your plan. You know better. That’s what his heart says in the second half
- He wasn’t disgruntled about the fact that his plan got tabled. He trusted God.
- Acceptance is the by product of submission- it embraces the disappointment of plans not coming to fruition. David had GREAT plans- but they weren’t God’s plans here we see his heart
- Psa 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want
- Ps 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.
- David was submitted to God in his life and this instance was no different- Again- he didn’t live a perfect life, but in this story specifically- he trusts that God knows what he is doing
- Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
- 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall [a]direct your paths.
- His response was to worship not get upset and turn his back on God- He didn’t argue
- Psa 138:7-8 READ that which concerns me;.
- What David knew- is that God is concerned with his people. He has a love for them.
- If you are a follower of YHWH, you can rest assured that HE has HIS plan and YOUR best interest
- What does it mean to you?
- Are you trusting in God’s plan when your plan falls through? Are you trusting him?
- Jobs, relationships, purchases, ministry stuff, life stuff.
- When Your plans- to honor God- get realigned- are you upset or do you accept as God’s hand?
- We all want to control our own destinies, but at the end of the day- there are so many variables that we cannot control. We do our part- but the LORD is the one that has final say
- When we submit to Jesus- we say- My life is not my own- it is what YOU desire- not me
- Ps 33:18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, On those who hope in His mercy
- Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
- I’ve said this verse many times- but it needs to be constant encouragement for us as we walk through this life-
- With PJ This week in Tacoma- drove by old house we tried to buy- HIS PLAN
- Philippians 4:6-7 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
- Have a heart that trust God through the details of your life-
- God’s provision- Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
- Hasn’t he taken care of you up to this point? It to make HIMSELF a name- Not YOU
- God’s promotion- and You have also spoken of Your servant’s house for a great while to come.
- God wants more for you than you want for yourself. You have to believe it.
- Why did he do it? For his words sake- and according to your own heart.
- To redeem people to make himself a name v 23
- If you’re a follower of Jesus- and you want to bring Glory to his name, and you’ve given your life to him, you should be willing to have your life be used in whatever way possible to redeem people and bring glory to his name.
