We Should No Longer Be Children

  • Eph 4:14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
  • We need to serve Each other. That’s part of what being a Christian is.
  • Here’s the hard part of a “church” There’s really parts of it that feel very transactional. Its one of the weirdest entities that exist and its unlike anything else on this planet.
  • None of us- not one of us who are Christians are supposed to just be consumers- None. Everyone is supposed to play some sort of part in the edification of the body of Christ.
  • In Modern ministry- there’s wires and parking lots and safety and instruments, in the early church maybe it was hummus, donkeys, water and child help. I dunno. But the modern manifestation takes a bit of people to pull it off. I think people like it. It’s rewarding to worship God this way.
  • Currently it takes about 60 people to make a Sunday happen. 60. That’s I rearranged my schedule, went to practice, showed up early, stayed late, went without, so that the Gospel can go forth and Jesus be praised. That’s what its all for- ANY one of those ministries- its for God to be worshipped, and the Gospel to go forth. It takes ALL of those people to make it work. One isn’t there- it messes it up.
  • And that doesn’t include all the OTHER ministries that happen during the week- LRY, Rev, Spot, Women, Men, AND personal ministry- AND deacons, and Pastors and all of that-
  • Its not ALL positional- but there are places where we really need help in this season- It takes us all.
  • 1 Peter 4:10-11 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 11 If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
  • But how do we get to that place?

First- you have to have a high view of your relationship with God-

  • Its something we talk about a lot here- we make Jesus the number one priority in our lives-
  • And if you don’t- then church might feel somewhat transactional- Parking may frustrate you, or loud Childrens ministry, or snacks being gone, or coffee running out. You might complain about the temp, the time, the teaching and the worship-
  • Why? Possibly because you haven’t transitioned past it being all about you and all for you.
  • Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
  • And I get it- life is rough- You got job, maybe spouse, kids, cars, cleaning, health, ugh ugh ugh.
  • Can there be one place where its just about me and I don’t have to do anything?
  • Yes! Its called an all inclusive resort! I’ve never been to one- but I hear they are awesome
  • We did go on a cruise for our 10 year- everytime we left the room come back to towel animal
  • All you can eat- do nothing- pampered- I once went to spa like that as well-
  • But that aint church!
  • Romans 12:3 Serve God with Spiritual Gifts For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
  • And that starts with a sober minded understanding of what Jesus did for you and that’s all you need-
  • Then- when you serve- you understand WHO its for and WHY its for it-
  • Colossians 3:23-24 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
  • I’ll tell you- if you’re not doing it for the Lord- it isn’t going to last- but if you grasp this- they you can Psalm 100:2 Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing.

2. You have to have a high view of the church

  • Its very en vouge to slam the local church- people do it all the time- what the church does, doesn’t do, pastors, money, people that hurt them etc etc.
  • And there are people who are hurt- and I’m one of them- I’ve been more hurt by people in this church than anyone in the world- No one here currently, but in the past.
  • But here’s what I know- Jesus loves his church. Jesus died for his church. I’m not giving up on it.
  • Acts 20:28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.
  • But people don’t think about that Jesus purchased the church with his blood. It’s so weird they’ll attend and sit here for years and never really worship or change. I don’t get it.
  • Pastor Jay- spartan races- loves them- I don’t go to them- I don’t pretend to like them.
  • But people will hang around a church for years that they don’t even like.
  • The church is a great place to grow- we help each other grow here-
  • Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
  • When we get together- we spur each other on- we help each other do good works- and it starts HERE-  Galatians 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.
  • Yes- we’re supposed to minister to other people- but what good is it if it doesn’t start here?
  • These are your fellow saints. Your spiritual family. A place of refuge, safety and love. And you can’t serve here? Charity starts at home!
  • Ephesians 4:16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
  • I’ve heard people say things like- “The church is too inward focused” which, if you’re living on potlucks and ski-trips that’s a bad thing- but the church wasn’t created for the sinner- the church was created for the saint-
  • And frankly, the local church throughout the years has allowed far too many wolves and goats to cohabitate with sheep and its ruined its witness.
  • Its not the Christians that hurt the witness of the Church- it’s the people who say they are Christians, that aren’t converted, that aren’t transformed- that hang out in the body (skin tabs)
  • See- when you have a high view of the church- you realize what its for- You realize whats its for and who its for
  • In the Army- we were supposed to clean this bathroom at this one unit- no one wanted to do it- it was so bad it couldn’t get clean- we would just put bleach on the floor and call it good
  • But now- In my church- I love to come on my cleaning Saturday and scrub. Its for Jesus.
  • Do you know what we’re doing here? We’re establishing a legacy ministry for Jesus. A church that will outlive us. I’m trying to invest in these kids now- so when they are in charge I can trust them
  • When you’re a transient person- you don’t care about the future. I know I’m doing these kids weddings. I know they are the future leaders of our church- long game.
  • 3. You have to have a high view of Scripture.
  • For whatever reason people don’t think that God meant what he said when he put it in scripture
  • Lets read 1 cor 12v7  But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
  • Did God mean that? Are we all part of a body? Is that how you view your church?
  • That’s why membership means so much- it’s a commitment. It’s a covenant.
  • So God gives you gift, for the body- and you have to know that gift and give that gift-
  • But what do you do with it? YOU USE IT- You use it for the edification of the body!
  • 1 Timothy 4:14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.
  • Don’t neglect it! Don’t say it doesn’t matter-
  • Every single ministry that we do here matters- its not just busy work. It welcomes, it takes away distractions, it disciples, it grows, it worships, it preaches,
  • Take landscaping- sometimes people will work so hard at trying to get someone to come to church, see bad landscaping, bad parking, bad greeting, dirty bathrooms, bad sound, smelly room, unpracticed worship, they are CLOSED to receive the word! Its all important!
  • Here’s what you do- you live out Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
  • You say God- I’ll do that- I’ll serve in that way- I’ll offer my body as a sacrifice to you
  • Now its been a few months- but I can probably be of better spiritual use than toddlers- but I’m willing! I’ll be where I need to be used!
  • 1 Peter 5:2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly;
  • This is only possible with a high view of scripture- If you really believe that God meant what he said and said what he meant- cause if he didn’t it doesn’t matter what the scripture says
  • Here’s what I don’t understand about people who don’t apply the word- do you just wait around for something good that you like? Are you just waiting for something you will agree to?
  • Serving, as a Christian, is a no brainer- you just agree to be used by God-
  • Galatians 5:13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
  • You should welcome the opportunity to serve one another. What a privilege!
  • Now, some take advantage- but that’s not on you- that’s on them- serving others is the Bible way!
  • I remember way back when I was an intern- got to help someone move- no recognition- no joy- also no boxes- I was there with another man from the church- but I did learn humility. I was gonna preach! Nope. You’re moving.
  • Read John 13:1-17 Jesus came to serve not to be served. If he is not above serving, how can we be? How can we not?
  • Romans 12:11 not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;
  • Acts 20:35 I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
  • Here’s the best part- No one is keeping score but God- he sees it, he blesses it
  • Its funny- most of the service you do for the Lord you wont get recognition for. No one knows. No one is impressed. No one treats you differently. You just do it as unto the Lord.
  • That’s what we are supposed to do- not let our right hand know what our left hand is doing
  • BUT Hebrews 6:10 For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
  • Can we take God at his word?
  • Would you ingest the scriptures today, and agree to serve in a couple places? Give of your time and talent?
  • Many people come for 2 services every single week- serve one- attend one- and if you can’t find the time, I will help you get relentless with your schedule- Michal finds time
  • John 13:15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.
